    • @@juangalton999 His talent for chess being surpassed by any other sure does seem like one of the greatest challenges ever. Since shorter time controls are the future, surely he will be surpassed in them easily by upcoming generations. But longer time controls are self-depriving, costly and stress-inducing, and they are dying, why do you think Magnus gave up his world title? His generation was the last one that put up with FIDE classical time controls and as a result you see the final and the most valuable gem of classical chess that was shaped i.e. Magnus Carlsen. But upcoming generations won't, by that I mean they'll find loopholes to make money, and you already see that case with Alireza making it to the candidates, he just doesn't want to put as much effort as Magnus did back then.

  • What's the difference between "It is as of move x that we have a completely new game" and "It is as of move x that this move has never been repeated again"?

    @jokingbat5@jokingbat52 ай бұрын
    • The former is where the game has never been played before in a new game. The latter is when agadamator is reviewing old games, so the game has gone somewhere unique, and has never been played again.. In other words , it is the point at which the game departs from a prepared recognized line and turns into something new for both.

      @scudder91@scudder912 ай бұрын
    • They're essentially the same. Agad uses the first one for current games and the second ones for games further in the past, to indicate that not only had the moves not been played up until that point, but they also haven't been repeated since the game was played.

      @SanityAardvark@SanityAardvark2 ай бұрын
    • it’s nice to get both, but “this position has never been repeated again” is especially useful for much older games, since the database of recorded high level games in the 1960s or whatever was much smaller than it is today. with old games it’s not as certain if a specific position had never been played before, but since we have strong documentation now we can be pretty certain if a position hasnt been played since

      @nicktomato7@nicktomato72 ай бұрын
    • The "completely new game" means no one had ever played that position until that day; so unless the players are extremely well prepared, they need to rely on calculation and understanding of the position to win and can't rely on their knowledge of previous games to play best moves. The "never been repeated again" means that no has every played *since* that day; this entails in short that the position is considered as so unsound that no one has ever wanted to even try playing it since. One touches on novelty and originality, the other touches on shit so bad no one has ever wanted to touch it since.

  • It has been depressing to see the silence about the genocide by Russia in Ukraine here. The former Ukrainian Karajakin recently was filmed in Russian uniform smiling by the ruins of an Ukraine city where thousands were slaughtered. What a time to talk about this creep as if he was a good guy, not the most hated player on the planet. Bye, lost all respect.
