DIY Blast Gates for Dust Collection!
BUILD PLANS FOR SALE:
scottwalsh.co/collections/plans
Since moving into my new shop in the fall, I had yet to set up my dust collection system. I was tired of my cheap plastic blast gates, and I want to eventually automate my whole dust collection system. Therefore, this was a fine time to design and build my own blast gates!
I used ¾” and ¼” MDF for this, since the surface texture is so smooth and MDF tends to be flatter than plywood. Both of these attributes are important for a good seal around the gate.
I didn’t really show installing all of the piping/ducting since it was a lot of boring head scratching, cursing and redoing things over and over again, hence why it took so long to produce this video (also it’s a busy time of year for everyone, including me).
I didn’t really go into any depth for the automation aspect in this video, but I hope to be releasing that one soon with a bunch of information regarding signals, controls, programming and logic controllers.

Cinematography improves every video. Good job Scott!
Thanks for watching Dan! It's nice to pickup a camera again after so many years!
“Every work of design is also a work of Art” -Me; Just Now.
Nicely done video. Your's are among the better woodworking videos & I do hope you keep putting them out. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much Frank! That's a really nice thing to say! I'm enjoying making videos thus far, so I'll continue making them as long as it stays fun. Unfortunately I don't have the shop time to make them as frequently as other KZheadrs, but I do what I can.
Great Video! Good for you making it yourself. Happy Holidays!
Thanks Alvin! Happy holidays!
A+ cinematography! The added visuals are also super helpful. Great job!!
Thank YOU!
great content, great delivery, nicely explained with handy on-screen visuals for the parts you're building. keep 'em coming :-)
Thanks so much for the encouragement!
I wouldn’t normally subscribe with so few videos out, but I can see you’re gonna grow this fast. Great video. Keep up the good work. And thanks for inspiration for my own blast gate dilemma I was having. Won’t be the same design but the concept inspired the solution.
Thanks so much Rhett! That means a lot. I've had a busy January, but I should have some new content coming soon!
Can’t wait to see what type of motors you used 👌🏼
Thanks for watching Mark! I'm most likely going to be using high torque servo motors. Smaller servo motors may work as well, but I'd rather use something with more power so I don't run into any potential issues.
@@ScottWalshWoodworking Are you planning on a video showing the application of the servo motors?
@@befmx31 yep! I can't guarantee when it'll be out, perhaps sometime this year 🤷♂️? Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thanks for watching Rory!
Great design, and you're so comfortable on camera that it's easy to focus on the project. Subscribed and looking forward to exploring your channel.
I can't believe that you were cutting and routing mdf AND NOT WEARING A MASK! Other than that it was a very good video.
Looking good. Where are the electric motors?
Those handtool skills tho
I always aim to impress
Great idea for simple automated blast gate design. Rotating instead of sliding gates makes a lot of sense.
Good Morning Scott. Thank you for such great work. I downloaded you PDF on the blast gate design and it did not open. I can not find where I downloaded it from........Can you please direct me to that download?
Hi Brian, send me an email to scottwalshmedia@gmail.com and i'll send it to you
Do you have actuators on the blast gates yet?? Curious how that went.
Not yet, the video is in the pipeline, but I have a few more things to get done first. I don't think it'll be too much longer... I hope not. I'm inherently lazy and I sometimes don't take the time to switch on the DC. I really need this lol
Hey Scott, unable to find a set of plans for the blast gates.could you send me a copy of the drawings.very much appreciated.rob
if you go to my 'about' section on my channel page, you can shoot me an email and I'll send them over
What happened to the servos?
Check out my latest video and see!
Are you standing on a stepstool at @10:50 or did you just make yourself a head-banging hazard? But then seeing you work at @4:34 maybe you're just used to that? Hmmm
I'm a little tall, and my basement shop has generally low ceilings and bulkheads. I think I'm also sitting on my bench @10:50, but I don't think it'll be a problem. I could use a good hit in the head every once in a while.
Where's the motor?
DON'T PUT anyone ON BLAST... not even yourself. SERIOUSLY. (HIP HOP & REGGAE) __ The Wild Greenberry ArtHouse TWGA 🤠💯🦈
YOU KNOW AT FIRST I LIKED THE DUST SHOOT SYSTEM.BUT THEN I GOT TO BUILDING IT.NOTHING WORKS OUT CORRECT,EVEN AFTER A FEW SDJUSTMENTS,NOTHING WENT AS THIS PERSON SAYS.TOTALY ABANDED THIS FOOLS SYSTEM, FOR SOMETHING THAT I KNOW THAT WORKS. BUT I CAN ONLY SAY I HOPE THAT HIS CHANNEL DOESN’T MAKE THE CUT.
