Hey Everyone Travis Here! I went way too deep on benchmarks to the point where it became its own video. I tested 5 MacBook Pros going back to 2015 in various real world and synthetic benchmarks to get an idea on where we are in terms of performance gains over the years, now that the 3rd generation of Apple Silicon is out. Spoiler alert M3 Max is a GPU monster :)

  • Wow. I’ve never seen another video where the person actually explains the tests, their utility and the context. Well done Travis. ❤

  • This has to be the best review I have seen of the M3 Macs. Apple has been yelling that this is a great upgrade for Intel Mac users and as a 2015 MacBook Pro user, this is what I was waiting for over a month. Thank you!

  • Another practical video that compares several generations and not just the most recent one. Keep it up!

  • Wow, that's amazing. I had the last 16 inch MacBook Pro with Intel. Now three years into Apple Silicon. Loving every minute of it. Looking forward to what comes next. You are tempting me though to trade in my M1 Max for the M3 Max when I see these types of benchmarks.

  • Excellent test. The slightly weaker performance of the 14 inch M2 max in the tomb raider benchmark, could that be due to throttling?

  • The major takeaway for me was how my i-9 from 2019 can still do things pretty well by comparison. I guess I can afford to wait until the M4 or M5

    • The killer feature of i9 MBP was how much heat it emitted.

    • Same takeaway for me. I’m feeling much better about waiting for next iteration, or the one after that. My partner will love my i9 for written work!

  • Thanks for the numbers. With Logic Pro tests really need to load many tracks and plugins to push real time playback, I would say the Lil' Nas offline render will not reflect the processing difference between Intel & M series...which is huge for music production.

  • Could it be that my MacBook is not performing as well as expected in these benchmarks? I'm quite intrigued by the impressive Speedometer scores you've achieved with the M1 chip. I'm curious, are these tests conducted anew on each device, or do you compare them against results from older hardware? It’s crucial to consider the Speedometer version, as scores aren't directly comparable across different versions. Accuracy in these comparisons is key. On my end, I'm using a MacBook Pro 14 with an M1 Pro 10 Core and the most recent macOS Sonoma. Post a clean restart, I'm registering about 330 points in Speedometer 2.1 (that is about what I expect in v. 2.1), noticeably lower than your 464 points for the M1 Max. This is intriguing, especially since the extra GPU cores in the Max shouldn't really affect this test.

  • Good to see Handbrake in there. Even better is the fact that you can use hardware acceleration on Apple silicon as well. And lastly it's great to be off x86. Intel's been so anti consumer for years now.

  • Great video! Do you think there's a significant difference between the M3 Max with 14 CPU, 30 GPU, 36GB RAM, 1TB and the M3 Max with 16 CPU, 40 GPU, 48GB RAM, 1TB? I'll be using it for video editing in 4K, sometimes 8K, After Effects, and work in DaVinci Resolve and Premier Pro. Thanks!

  • Would've been cool if you tested logic pro instrument playback, but can understand the difference in ram will also effect this test.

  • Also, exporting audio projects in Logic is not a way to measure performance. First of all, in a professional setting you would print in real time. Mostly because people mixdown into hardware (hybrid workflows). This means you have to play the whole track from start to finish and the record the output as a master stereo track. You can then export just that one track.

  • Right... so I have an M2 Max for work. I absolutely annihilated it by just using some specific Excel formulas, mind you in some huge files, but they work fine on a mid range office Windows11 laptop. Microsoft and Apple forum mods want the file, but it has sensitive info. lol My Macbook Pro was taking like 5 min to select a cell, 10-15 min to just scroll, sometimes it would just sit there doing whatever like I was benchmarking it, but I didn't touch anything. I had to save my report and just saving a 20Mb Excel sheet took 1.5 HOURS! Hours! It was slower than my Pixel phone with the same file!! LOL These Apple CPUs are awesome at whatever they're optimized for, but a few times now in 6 months I found things that make it feel like a ten year old smartphone! It's insane that it has this kind of dual personality for the CAD $6K they cost!! I was beyond furious with it at the time. They are crippled when you need to do something it's nor optimized for. Also Mac OS needs to be restarted super often (way more than Windows) or apps stop working properly. Keep in mind I'm a heavy user of complex things. I usually use laptops to the max. MacOS is also decent overall, but it's horrible at managing windows and apps. It feels really crap compared to Windows 11. I wish I went with a Core i9 laptop and Windows 11 for work but the money is spent now. The MacBook Pro M2Max is only better when it comes to battery life (it's amazing). The screen and speakers are also very good, maybe the best for business and media, but high end Windows laptops are also awesome in that respect. The display image quality is amazing on the Macbook, but the smudging and ghosting at 60 Hz is horrible to my eyes. Games definitely look crap on it, like those original OLED screens on phones, the blacks smudge around so badly. The Legion screen has less contrast, but at 240Hz 1600P, it's much more smooth and crisp with anything moving on the screen. I have a maxed Legion 7i, RTX4080 for non-work uses and it's better in every way aside from battery life. I rarely use it on battery, so no big deal. Storage is also an issue with the MacBook Pro M2 Max. I have 2TB on that and it's kind of slow feeling compared to the Legion (Samsung 990 Pro Gen 4 M.2 drives). I also upgraded the Legion at 6 TB and it was still CAD $2000 cheaper after tax. I travel a bit so it's important that I have everything with me, locally, beside my cloud backups. I think this is a very good assessment of how MacBooks perform in a real life scenario for technical work, not just in benchmarks.

  • I did the browser benchmark on my iPad Pro 12.9 5th gen. I got 341. I know it’s fast but i don’t expected to be a lot faster compared to i9 since it’s a M1 on a tablet. 😮😅 Later edit: Don’t even get warm doing this, cold as ice.
