Learn How To Sing The Welsh National Anthem - 10,000 subscribers special
Lots of people have messaged me over the years asking me to teach various Welsh language topics but 'How to sing the Welsh National Anthem' has been the most requested. People say that they would love to be able to sing along when watching the Welsh Rugby match at home on TV, at the Pub with their mates or if they're very lucky, at the Stadium with thousands of Welsh Rugby fans.
In this video I first sing you the National anthem (1:26), then quickly go through an English translation (2:35) so you understand what you're singing about. Finally I teach you how to pronounce the lyrics, line by line, word by word (4:35).

As a proud Welsh man our National Anthem always brings a tear to my eyes.👍🏴
I love listening to you , I’m having trouble rolling my R’s 😊
Lesson en route to the game today! Thank you 🏴
Being able to sing along has won me friends, it really is the best anthem and always sang with passion.
Brings tears to your eyes when you’re in the stadium and singing this, doesn’t it? I love that we have such a tradition of singing, especially men, and we still proudly keep it up.
@@JustMeUpNorth I am an Englishman of sorts Bit of Scots and Irish thrown in. I climbed and walked In Eryri (National Park) even became an Ambassador for it. The Anthem gets the hairs standing up on the back of my neck, the Flag is the best, and the language I love to hear, 80% around Llanberis, I speak a little Cymraeg and I would never dream of calling the Big Mountain anything other than Yr Wyddfa. Keep Singing.
Your national anthem is so beautiful. I stumbled on your video today after I watch the World Cup FIFA 2022 in Qatar Wales vs USA. I’m from America but I have a very special friend whom I met 7 years ago now, who lives in Swansea with his 2 young kids. I wish someday to be able to visit your beautiful country. I want to learn your National Anthem as it’s touched me.
Been wanting to learn this for ages..ive nearly bitten my tongue off twice. Teaching Welsh to English speakers is probably one hell of a challenge
I'm not from Wales and I can't speak Welsh but my DNA tests show that I'm over 50% Welsh. So great to be able to sing the anthem of my ancestors! Thank you so much, From South Australia.
Not 43% Nigerian? 😂
👍🏴
I live in Nashville Tennessee, but 3 lovely new Welsh friends have recently come into our lives. I've been watching a few of your videos. I don't expect to learn a lot of Welsh, but want to get some of the greetings & goodbyes. They tried to teach a few to me, but it wasn't until I watched your videos that they made sense in my brain. (Shumae, Nos da, etc). I would love to at least learn a few lines of the National Anthem. That would be fun!
That’s funny because me and my friends went on holiday there for 11 days for CMA Fest and a few other things.
This is the 2003 Wales vs England 6 nations rendition of our anthem. It brings a tear to my eye. You can feel the passion for the anthem as they sing it. Incredible.
It’s one of the best versions I’ve heard. Llawer o hwyl!
2003 or 2013?? When Wales won 30 - 3. kzhead.info/sun/dLFtna2kkH19bKs/bejne.html&ab_channel=JulianZee
Thank you very much, exactly the kind of video I was looking for, to sing the national anthem at rugby world cup in Lyon.
This is fantastic! Thank you. I went to my daughter's graduation in Cardiff 3 years ago and was blown away by the anthem in Welsh. I knew the tune, as I have welsh heritage but was born in England and don't know the words. Now, this year, my Son is also going to be graduating in Cardiff and I'm sure they will sing again. So this time I'm going to be ready to sing my heart out !
As a proud Englishman, may I thank you for this great explanation. I love the Welsh National Anthem.
My dad is an Englishman, I was born in the states and sing both of our national Anthems with pride but recently watching the Cup I’ve seen a different side of him singing the Welsh anthem. Reminds us of my nanny, his mum…goosebumps every time. This Yank almost has it down!
My fathers wish was to have our national anthem sung at his funeral. We were born in Barry South Wales and the only ones who knew the anthem. His funeral is due to take place next week, he was 93 and I’m so pleased to have found your site - I’m printing the “ easy” words out for the rest of our family who are English born, to sing along with me. Diolch xx
My condolences on your loss. I’m so glad you’re finding this video a help in fulfilling your fathers wish.
@@LearnWelshPodcast Thankyou xx
Diolch, diolch, diolch. First I must admit to being a Saeson, and out of necessity have now returned to England. But I'm proud to have two Welsh children having worked for many years in both North and South Wales. I've gained many good friends in Wales and being a photographer have numerous majestic views taken thoughout the Country. I became an avid fan of rugby and yes I saw Paul Thornburn's majestic, unbelievable kick, live in the Six Nations Cup back in '86. I have many brilliant memories of God's own Country, but there is one moment that brought me to tears, and I'm not one to cry easily. At the end of a Welsh Male Voice choir concert in Venue Cymru, Llandudno the audience rose to their feet to sing in unison your beloved Anthem. Both the wife and I were deeply moved. Since then I have sung my rendition of the Anthem as best I can but now, my friend, I'm sure the interpretation will be more loyal to the language, even if the singing voice is lacking. Unwaith eto diolch.
I have been studying my ancestry and found out a line from my mom’s side is from Caernarfon, Wales. So excited to learn the National anthem of some of my ancestors. Thank you for taking the time to teach us so well! 🏴
Thank you so very much! My Dad was Welsh and I’m going to watch Wales v Italy in this years six nations and now I can sing their National Anthem with pride 😊. Thank you.
Best flag and best anthem!
👍🏴
Defnyddiol iawn diolch! Bydda i’n anfon hyn at holl ffrindiau ac aelodau teulu Cymraeg sy methu siarad Cymraeg ac eisiau ymuno a’r anthem ar diwrnodau rygbi ac yn y blaen! Esboniad gwych, diolch unwaith eto! 👏👏🏴👏👏
I just need a week to translate this Charlotte
Jason, this has been what what I'm looking for. My family are very proud Ponty people and although they moved across the sea to England I have never felt anything other than Welsh. I think it comes from the family and their love or Wales and the fact I never saw a white Rugby shirt. My grandfather was a Welsh guardsman and I was lucky enough to have JPR himself put my broken leg in a cast. Your video and tutorial had helped me no end to grasp my Welsh heritage, Diolch.
Excellent translation and excellent phonetics enjoyed the video very much. A very good lesson for Welsh people who don't speak Welsh but won't to sing the national anthem well done.
Thank you Jason. I have been trying to learn the Welsh national anthem for a long time but it never sticks in my head. Your lesson made it so easy and I happily sing away while I’m working. I’m Scottish though, not Welsh but my last name is Williams so I feel this gives me a reason to be able to sing along 😊🏴
As a Scot, I have to say the Welsh is by far the best national anthem of all..Outstanding video.
Marvelous! You are a great teacher. Much obliged.
Thank you Jason. It has been a life long ambition for me to sing the Welsh National Anthem, I’m not from Wales by the way, but I am a rugby union fan and when I first heard it sung I knew I had to learn it. I only discovered your tutorial a few days ago buy I’m well on my way to achieving my dream thanks to your wonderful teaching. Thank you. Kind Regards Stephanie (Adelaide Australia)
I really glad you found the video helpful. Hope you’ll be singing along to the anthem when the next Wales match is on TV. 🏉 🏴
My Great great Grandparents were welsh and my family on my mothers side. I consider myself half welsh and that's why I wanted to learn the Anthem. Thank you Diolch 😊 💓 xx
I'm Breton and always been in love with Wales, its language and culture. I can sing Dacw 'nghariad and Yma o hyd, and now I'll be able to sing this beautiful anthem thanks to you. I'll try and check your channel, Welsh is, according to me, the most beautiful language out there and I'd be happy to learn it. Diolch yn fawr iawn!
Thank you from Johannesburg, South Africa. Our anthem is remarkable but the Welsh National Anthem the most beautiful and robust! I studied in Cardiff for two years so was lucky to experience hearing this live in several different places, including Cardiff arms Park. RWC 2023 has me supporting 2 teams - the Boks of course, and Wales.
very proud scot with welsh relatives and friends and would love to be able to sing welsh anthem.
This is life-changing... especially after I watch this 100 times! Canadian!!!
This is the best video to learn the Welsh Anthem. Thank you so much!!
Jason, you are a great teacher! So glad I found this podcast!
Same here! Thank you, Jason. :-)
I recently found out my great grandmother and great grand father we’re from Swansea so I have of late felt a big connection to wales, I love wales anyway but this has made it more special to me
Thank you so much for this. I’m English and going to the match on Sunday. Can’t wait to belt out perhaps the two best national anthems in the world 😊
A fantastic tutorial. I'm Welsh but I moved to Canada about 11 years ago. My husband is Canadian and we have a son, I'm excited to share this tutorial with them, so that when we can go back home to visit they'll know it. Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant video. Really enjoyed your method of teaching. I’m English with Welsh friends and want to surprise them next time we watch a match together!! Thank you!!!!
my favorite anthem My Welsh grandmother used to sig this when i was a child and it always brings rears to my eyes
My ma side of the family is Welsh & knew alot of the Barry John 1st 15. I can tell where music & poetry comes from in Britainia .listening to this.
I (born in the US and adopted at birth) recently discovered that my biological father was Welsh, so I am so grateful for this opportunity to connect with my heritage!
Always welcome.... What is he on about? No one can sing that on is own.. Good gravy. That's My Mam. Sit down 😮
Much appreciated ❤
Thank you for such a great posting. I was born in Wales and my uncle tried to teach me the anthem when I was young but I ended getting upset because I couldn't even pronounce some of the phrasing. Your post is perfect. I shall be singing my lungs out the next time the Mighty Wales take the field - Rugby for preference! Cheers
Absolutely loved this and will not doubt watch it many times till I can sing it word perfect. I'm Scottish and I think the Welsh and the French have the best anthems.
So proud to be welsh. Our national anthem is so proud and beautiful
Thanks, I’m going to the game in Saturday and with a bit more practice hope to be able to join in with the singing.
Thank you so much Jason, this has helped me to understand the sounds of the words more clearly. Great job!
Thank you so much for this. My father (and all of his side of the family) is from Abercynon and although I grew up in England I was always taught that I’m Welsh and Irish (my mother is from Ireland). I now live in Dubai and will be at the game in Doha against England and I can’t wait to learn this properly to be able to sing it with my chest with my father - a once in a lifetime occasion, so diolch! 🏴
Ny father also, Myrddin Thomas, long gone now. All our holidays were in Abercynon with the family and my heart has stayed in the valleys.
Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I revisit it before every 6N and RWC, just to polish my pre-match singing.
My nan was Walsh, and I'm very proud of my heritage.
Absolutely outstanding 😢
This is absolutely brilliant! Will be attempting my first rendition at the Wales Italy match tomorrow, wish me luck!!
Son to a Welsh mother and self teaching Welsh on a language app for a year...... slow progress. Ever since i was a kid this anthem has made me watery eyed.....great to finally learn it. Diolch yn fawr
Stumbled upon this video whilst scrolling through renditions of the anthem. Brilliantly broken down and explanation of the lyrics, to make picking it up easier. Always preferred hearing this anthem dispite being English myself - Thank you.
As an American I definitely appreciate this anthem! Thank you for showing us how to sing it. I have noticed that there are two covers on KZhead in English done by Paul Robson. Not sure if you’ve heard of that artist but he apparently sang two versions of the anthem. I think there is one that was done in 1939 and the other one was done much later. Anyway, just wanted to make a point out there, but there are officially two English covers of it.
I am a Proud Welshman born in Manchester but came home for over half my life and I am glad to be able to brush up my Anthem skills. My truly Welsh wife from Bangor and I used to go to an apartment in a country house and they had a Welsh choir every week and we used to sing the Anthem and go in the bar and share their butties 🥪 😊 Could you please do this again but for Yma y Hyd? Diolch yn Fawr
Thankyou, I spent the end of my youth in South Wales and always tried learning bits here and there, thanks for the tutorial
Just found you channel and loving it. I'm scottish with half siblings from Wales and just love the Welsh language and would love to surprise my brother with singing this to him hehe. Been practicing this and Calon Lan. Best wishes and keep up the good work
Thank you so much my dad has been annoyed I’ve been unable to sing along with him at games at watching on tv hopefully I can now. Thank you ❤
God bless Wales. Awesome greetings from Canada.
Hiya and Greetings from Chicago! I am fortunate that my soles have touched Welsh soil, and I am grateful. I was so well received and my meager attempts at the language were encouraged and tolerated. Of course, as a somewhat polyglot I was an eager and quick learner (the "chuch" is germane to my maternal ancestors and rolling my "r" is yesterday's news). Your tutorial is so appreciated, and I do hope you'll keep a welcome. Diolch Todah Thanks.
Thankyou I really want to learn to a Welsh my husband is Welsh and he just gone into a nursing home and. Now he is speaking mostly Welsh iam an Australian and have been married to him for 60 years to e able to have a bit of conversation with him would be wonderful
Thank you ❤
What a rendition!!
You're a brilliant language teacher!
Absolutely superb! Can’t wait to sing that with pride on 25 February, diolch x
fantastic, Diolch.
My mother was Welsh and I'm so proud of my Welsh heritage. A passionate and brave people. She was from a Welsh speaking household who was made to learn English when she went to the National School. As a child I spent a lot of time with my Welsh speaking relatives and I miss these bright warm people. I was lucky enough to have picked up a bit but wish I was fluent. Spent some time learning Calon Lan for my mother's funeral in July. Diolch yn Fawr.
Thank you so much for this having just gone to the 2 Wales football matches and the rugby Wales v Fiji this is much needed diolch
Thanks very much....leaning this at moment for the choir ....so very very helpful. First video I have seen. Subbed and liked.
You have a fantastic voice.
So useful for Wales football fixtures!
Brilliant. Thank you.
Fantastically explained. Thanks
Brilliant lesson, thank you
What a beautiful lesson! I'm from Brazil and I was looking for a way to understand this unique anthem. I really hope someday I can reach the land of Wales and sing this masterpiece with the local people. WorldCup is coming and November 21st it is certain that this anthem is going to be supported by the voice of so many people around the planet. I´m already commit to it :) Thank you Teacher Jason!
And I did! I'm on welsh soil, learning about this beautiful place and its people. Diolch yn fawr iawn!
So very helpful. Tthankh you😊
I've told the kids they have to be able to sing this before we go to a rugby international. Your video is really helping with learning.
Awesome great Instruction buddy, I've to teach this to my Welsh friend
great stuff man loved it
Beautiful
Off to See Wales Vs Italy in a couple of weeks and as a family we wanted to learn the anthem for my Husband (he’s Welsh we are English - well technically the kids are 50/50 - their hearts are Welsh!) Great Video - thanks
Yes really good video and it was very helpful for me as well, just a shame about the result but we'll gloss over that for now! Still a great experience to be part of the pre match ritual!
That's going to take some practising!
But it’s worth it!
Absolutely worth it.
Thank you for this, really helpul video :)
Thank you! As a student in a welsh school, this has helped so much for my up-comming eisteddfod. 🏴 Balchder dros Gymru! 🏴
Best lesson ever!
Brilliant video pal❤️
You sang it beautifully
Amazing I loved it!
Really glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Jason.
I'm from Switzerland but enjoy singing the national anthems during the rugby 6 nations, particularly the scottish, welsh and irish ones. Welsh one is really hard to learn for me, but so pleasant and emotional to sing :) Just hope to sing these in your stadiums in the future. Thank you for these so useful explanations !
The Welsh National Anthem is hard to learn but it’s also the best. I’m not biased at all. 😉
@@LearnWelshPodcast You're not biased - the Welsh National Anthem *is* *objectively* the best. Says an envious Englishman. Can we borrow the tune for a new English anthem instead of the awful God Save the King? (Unfortunately, I'm not sure we could get 50 million English to learn the Welsh.)
Best learn this anthem on the Tube man!
Thank you this was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful. Nothing like the Welsh anthem sang by the Welsh.
I would like to sing along, at the end of our local WI meeting. 😁
Thank you for this - next 6 nations I will go for it.
Thank you so much ..
Oh my love it. Thank you😎
Perfect...from a Belgian...with love...
Brilliant, thank you, aI have long wanted to learn how to sing this
fabulous Jason-thank you. My old mum who reached 100 years and 11 days was fluent in Welsh but I always wish she had taught me to sing Land of my Fathers her way. I am practicing for tonight's game but it doesn't sound too good. Jim
Thank you so much, I am graduating in a few weeks and although I'm learning Welsh I just haven't got to the point I can just read it and pick it up. I'm so happy that I'll be able to belt out the whole thing and not just GWLAD GWLAD!
Hi Elin. Ime into of the first week of learning. How is your journey going on?
JUST PERFECT
