It's time to plow the garden again with the team. Leonard weighs Stub before harnessing the team. Leonard uses a walking plow because the garden is very small. The soil was a bit sticky so, Justin, was in charge of cleaning off the plow. After the garden was finished, Stub and Stoney were let out and enjoyed a nice roll. Back at home, the boys greased the grain drill, and we filled some raised garden beds.
This is super cool. The wife and I are buying a sustinance farm right now, and I want to learn to plow with horses. Our Amish neighbors do, so I'm hoping to make friends and have them teach me if they'd be so kind.
In "1964" when I was nine or so, I took some kite string and tied it to the forelock of my great uncle's plow horse that weighed in at right around two thousand pounds like the beautiful horse in this video and he'd allow me to lead him all around the field. When he stopped in his tracks and raised his left front leg, that was my signal to climb up and get a great view of the farm from his broad back. He'd graze and flick his ears back and forth and we'd spend the afternoon together. Sometimes I'd bring a library book and sit up there and read. My cousins were so jealous. :D I was the only kid out of the whole crowd of cousins that he'd allow to "ride" him. :D It wasn't like he'd go where I directed him. I was just along for the ride. :) Excellent team. Works well together.
What a sweet memory.
The children are growing up fast I really enjoy your videos
Yes they are!
He truly is a master with those horses!! Been years since I have seen that done, thank you for bringing us along, look fwd to more!!
Been around farms all my life and owned one, but, I never got to try horses, But, thanks to you tube I get to watch an expert like this guy doing his thing with the horses. Love the way he has perfect control
@@MichaelSmith-hs5iu It is truly captivating for sure!!!
As long as there are farmers who care about both their history and the art of ploughing , people like me thousands of miles away will be forever grateful.
My dad farmed 100 acre farm with just 4 horses until I was 14 in 1959. (then he bought an 8N Ford) He plowed with an IH 1-16 plow using 3 horses.( it had a seat and steel wheels ) As a kid I loved to walk behind in the furrow. When plowing with horses you can hear the soil turning over Good memories !
He is sure good horseman. Nice to see!!!!!!
Great video, love seeing the kids and horses.......
I have a great deal of respect for everyone in the video, the horses included. Children were helping where they could and doing as they were told. Horses have better manners and behavior than many of the children around today. Thank you for a GREAT video. There are some bright spots in our world!
Talk about old school plowing, this was truly awesome to watch!
Very old school. We're thankful that we don't have to do all our plowing like that!
your kids are lucky to see this kind of plowing in person. What an awesome team of horses. Grandpa looked like he was enjoying himself too.. Your kids sure love being part of the farm. They have some of the best teachers raising them!!!
great job plowing Leonard, don't you hate it when it doesn't scour, last fall I had a lot of trouble with that. This spring in sod it plowed great. I love seeing them boys out working, helping dad.
The soil here doesn't scour well especially when it's moisture. Where I grew up we never had trouble scouring and seldom used more than 2 horses to plow. Here we used 3, 4 and sometimes 5 horses plow.
We just hooked the black gelding to the steel wheeled spreader for the first time. We should've recorded that.
I was wondering if Jim watched this.
They pull it like its nothing. I see why horses were so popular back in the day. You could do acres and acres a day with these guys.
beautiful hard-working children. God Bless.
This video really brought back some good memories to Me ! Grandparents lived in town and Mom Hosey's garden was 4 city lots in size ! and She would only let Mr Copas plow it with his Horses !! Your Grandson reminds me of being the the superintendent when Mr Copas was plowing ! I'm now 78 and smiling about those days of helping Her with the Garden, Thank you !!
Loved it a good team with a good teamster
Thanks
Awesome video, love seeing the draft horses working. You got great help greasing that drill Allan. Take care guys and stay safe 👍
Enjoyed the video. I'm in the hospital here in S.C. wit quadruple by pass surgery and can't plow for a while so just enjoying see somebody else. Enjoy watching them farm kids keep up the good work. God Bless
There are so many things I love about this video! Spring weather (while the snow is thick on the ground), beautiful fertile soil, great toiling horses, wonderful little kids being kids and learning skills from the adults, and family. It doesn’t get any better than this!
Loved seeing them young boys greasing that grain drill. I liked how that old school plowing with the horses. We need more of this kind of things now days.
Yours is not to wonder how Yours is but to pull and plough. I have never in my life seen such disciplined horses (and I owned drafts years ago). No shouting, those animals knew exactly what a) was expected of them, and b) how to get the job done. Much respect from NZ.
I followed my grandpa many times, plowing gardens for people. Always fishing worms. Another great memory, living in these Great United States. Enjoy you videos.
Nice plowing, good soil and a good am of good-looking well-behaved horses, what a pleasure!
Awesome video Brought back a lot of beautiful memories he did a marvellous job and once again love love your little helpers you folks have and make the most beautiful and best videos on YT I enjoy them immensely well done god bless you all stay safe take care until next time 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love to watch a well-trained team.
Thank you for this video. My dad and grandfather farmed with horses and a Fordson tractor. As my dad would say : " Before the war"
Just another great video. Kids having fun. God bless Trinity Dairy 🙏🏽
Very nice video! Hard to believe that the Amish community still plows their fields with horses! I'm from PA and in Lancaster county there are still a lot of Amish farmers!
That's a good team all 3 of them
They've had a lot of years together
Enjoying your horse powered plow videos this morning I am in my soul cab tractor the ate it we run on the farm this morning while I'm there a 3 1/2 acre field thrown it all one way so my trip back empty I'm watching the horses work this will be the last of our corn ground for the year like they try to plant next week or early the following week enjoyiing watching those horses work and marveling at the quiet at the same time I'm sure glad we don't have to farm that way anymore don't believe my old knees would stand pushing plow for very long anymore thanks for bringing that to us give me some company while I'm working here by myself
Great video. Can one imagine doing hundreds of acres in rocky soil this way? Out forefathers really were hard men.
The Old Ways need to be preserved. I have a feeling they are coming back.
Ku
The raised beds..... That was pretty slick the way you did it.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful thing, so much skill, and to be handing it down as well. The best video I've ever seen. Thank you so much, from the UK.
Great job. Lots of Hard work. Beautiful horses. God-bless all the mothers out their. Please keep safe. 🙏praying for all Farmers.
Horses are the most amazing animals. They have done so much for mankind throughout time. Horses have carried man and their loads, pulled wagons and plows. They have gone through wars and helped settle America. Horses need to be given special treatment and not mistreated or killed for any human needs period.
and they taste good as well
Brings back memories, my grandpa had two work horses named King and Queen. We had tractors but they would be used to “tickle scratch” the top of the soil so it would dry out and tractors could work the ground up for planting. My grandpa let me take the horses to the barn when I was small, the horses walked so fast it felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground.
Wonderful video! This gives me a clear view of what my grandparents talked about when I was a child as to how they farmed with horses when they were young.
Thanks! I enjoy seeing the horses out working
Having Amish neighbors I have seen a lot of horse plowing, but that’s the first time I have seen a walk behind plow in action. Enjoy your channel.
My first draft horse experience was sitting on one of my granddad's pair at age 3. I am 64 and I still recall it vividly. Thanks for sharing.
The soil you all turned over looks great - rich & fertile. The horses are well trained and make an easy task of it. Plus they provide great fertilizer for the garden! The putty knife boy will be driving this team before you know it. And GOD has blessed you all already... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for taking good care of these beautiful animals.
Brings back great n happy memories ....hard work but happier times !
That plow really works nice. Looks like good ground too. Nice team.
Really liked how u involve the boys-when done well-they’ll near always be happy to help Enjoyed watching
So nice to see well behaved Horses like that. But iam sure they can have there moments.. Thanks for getting out the "Green Tractor"... Lol.. Dont tell Allan. Lmao...
I appreciate you filming and sharing the horses working. The Amish here plow with 4 horses abreast.
When my dad plowed the fields with the horses he would use 4, sometimes 5.
very fortunate children to be raised by you folks. God bless
That’s a sight I’d never get tired of....beautiful horses effortlessly pulling a plow. Thanks for the video. ❤️
Up until the mid 40's, my Mom helped plow with a team, my Grandfather gave her the Oliver walking plow she used, we had it until we sold out from farming in 2005. The tailing edge of the moldboard and hitch were wore heavily from flipping it at the headlands, dragging it to the next furrow. Great video Jen!
that is some nice plowing there.. soil looks good too!!
Great Horses, Good Job.
My wife wants me to build raised beds. You’ll have to tell me how they work out. I’ll be watching too. Lol
Enjoyed seeing your horses working. My dad used horses for farm work, I have only used tractors. Came to Minnesota in 2019 to see the world championships of ploughing. I farm in Australia. .
Great video of old time farming 🐴🐴
There was a family that cut hay and stacked it by horses. they did that clear into 2008. They retired and the horses retired. I used to love seeing those horses work.
Allen your in luck your wife is buying you a new tractor she watch it plow today🤣🤣🤣
Amazing, we do the same here where I live. My great grand father did it with two bulls long ago. We still use horses mainly when we have the lines of crops or veggies and we go by the side to get rid of the bad weeds. We take care a lot of our horses, we love them, they do most of the job, you have to guide them. Also, nice spot to grow some organic veggies for your family, greetings from Rapa Nui.
Are there many horses on Easter Island and are they used for agriculture by many people? Thanks for telling Us about Your Family history!
I love watching a good team of horses do what they do best. So cool. Glad its still being used in this generation
I really enjoyed this video!! I've been working on a new song titled "Keep Your Hand on The Plow" which is what led me here. I'll be watching more for sure. You folks are truly blessed to be living like you're living.
It's great to watch a team of Belgians work. My Grandfather had a pair of Belgians named Tom and Jerry. I only have seen a few pictures of them in the field. My elderly Mom so enjoyed this video! It brought back memories of those horses and how my grandfather kept them for pulling the hay wagons after he had purchased a new Ellis Chalmers tractor!

@@warnMPMP What do you get outta correcting spelling mistakes on youtube ? Don't be a dick bud...
I am from the South and in my youth I saw plenty of mules pulling a plow but not many draft horses. These big boys are a pleasure to watch and the relationship between plowman and team is wonderful. They respond to a click of the tongue or a soft command. I can’t imagine, back in the day, following those two all day. Thanks for the video.
Oh, a team of mules would be so cool to have.
Fine Team you got there.
Mesmerizing! Beautiful video, thanks.
Kitch-Kitch-Kitch! Ops! It's the Universal language for working horses and bulls. These horses are very well trained and disciplined. Brings my memories back. Thanks for the viedo. Oh yeah, there's a water girl!
That soil is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
What a Beautyful Great Thing ! It,s remind me my grandparents life… God bless !
You and your team make it look so easy.
Fun to watch, this is the way my Grandpa did it when my mother was a little girl before they bought the oil pull rumely tractor. My grandpa had relatives that also farmed down the street from him and this relative came and took my grandpa's horses to do work w/o asking. One of the horses wasnt responding to my grandpa's relative the was they wanted her to so the relative took a dirty pitchfork to her hip. Its very lucky the horse didnt die from Blood Poisoning
Amazing animals. And the horses are cool too. Thanks.
Виртуоз.Дай БОГ крепкого здоровья и всех,всех благ! С уважением.
Great to see people still using draft horses. Remindes me of my Grandpa back in Glen Rock, Pa. God bless.
What a beautiful, well trained team. You could tell that they loved what they were doing.
Good job and God bless yall

That brings back memories, that kind of plowin is hard work.
This makes me miss our Belgians... pulling plows and wagons, and logging was fun!
Well trained horses, good looking garden soil and a wonderful grandson (I’m assuming) to help you out. Well done sir!!
I always wanted to see that . Thanks for the video.
That was fun to watch. Those horses are well trained.
LOVED EVERY SECOND I SAW,,,I GREW UP IN A PLACE LIKE THIS YOU HAVE SHARED WITH US,,,IN MEXICO.....What a years i enjoyed with dad and mom and brothers
That was a neat trick sta nding the planter boxes on end as u filled them
Worked well
Really great video, Ive seen many a demonstration with draft horses but usually short one or two minutes and a ride on plow. This showed us how much work was actually put into breaking ground the old school way... it's no wonder the average life span of that era was somewhat shorter than today. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job!
Looks like a lot of fun!
Great vieeo of some beautiful horses!
Great looking Soil and Team too!
Very fine and cool Horses !! Wishes from Austria KURT
You plow all day like that You know you have done Hard day's work
For sure!
The real HP 💪 . Greets from Austria 👋
I am very used to hard labor and all my life I have always heard "my grand dad plowed these fields with a horse" well lah de dah I would enjoy this as I am not the horse for once. Thanks for this video to settle such and annoying comment from *years* ago wow what a great farm you have, really enjoyed seeing the kids involved in greasing
