There are three main movement types that watches utilize - Mechanical, Automatic, and Quartz. Mechanical and Automatic watches contain no batteries and with proper maintenance they can last a lifetime+. Quartz watches are battery powered and are superbly accurate. Solar watches almost bridge the gap (in a sense) between Mechanical/Automatic watches and Quartz watches because they last for decades and they retain amazing accuracy because they are part of the Quartz family. In this video, I'll share with you five reasons why you should own a solar watch!

I really enjoy watches and that's why I started this channel so I could review them regularly but my satisfaction is not found in owning or experiencing watches, no matter how many I may accumulate or how luxurious and expensive they may be . . .
Wise King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 5:10 "He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity."
The truth is, material possessions of any kind, money, power, etc. never can and never will satisfy our hungering souls. Only knowing, loving, and serving God can truly satisfy.
The only way we can have a real relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe, is through the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God.
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
Through Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, for my sins and your sins, and His resurrection from the dead we can have peace with God (Romans 5:1), forgiveness of sins (Acts 10:43), eternal life (John 3:16), and so much more!
In Christ, we can know true joy now and for all eternity.
"He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." - 1 John 5:12

Another advantage of solar: With regular quartz watches you have to open the case to change the battery, and often times opening the case will significantly degrade the water resistance ability of the watch. To keep your watch as waterproof as it was when it left the factory, whenever you open the case you may have to replace and re-grease the gaskets and do a water pressure test. Solar avoids this, as there is no need to open the case ever, which means you get to keep the factory waterproofing.
Todd Tannenbaum This is a good point! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I hope you’ll subscribe if you’re not already!
You are right to replace the O-ring seal whenever you replace the battery. But rubber O-rings also lose their mechanical properties over the years. Preventive maintenance of 3 dollars would be recommended to my opinion after 7-10 years to be sure to keep it’s water proofing (normal shelf life of O-rings). What do manufacturers advise?
@@jkroadster good advice! I’m not sure.
If only solar batt/caps lasted so long. :-) You WILL need to open the back and replace the batt/cap, in my case, my Seiko V175 needed its replaced after just 6 yrs.
@@altaroxllc3184 just six years? Something’s not right… 😟
You never know when you might need a function. Some years ago, I was on a a business trip to France and decided to tour Paris on foot, intending to navigate by phone. My phone coverage went out, and I was essentially lost in a strange city with little understanding of French. By chance I had put on my Protrek, and with the compass function and a paper tourist map I was able to get around and make it successfully back to the hotel.
That's an awesome story! Thanks for sharing!
Neat! My brother has a Protrek its a nice looking watch, I'm delighted to hear that it got you out of difficulties for real!
I bought a Solar watch by Lorus over 25 years ago and it’s still working fine.

Have a solar Seiko, it was sitting in a drawer for 3 years because I needed a new band, just replaced the band and it still works flawless. Love this watch
That's great! Thanks for watching!
I love my very affordable Seiko Solar watches too! They're all still running as accurately today as they were when brand new 10 years ago!
I belong to the large group of people who since many years have been using the mobile phone as watch instead of a wristwatch. And it's interesting that the mobile phone still has not totally replaced the wristwatch. But during long time I have thought: why in the world I have to pick up the phone every time I want to know the time? I am enough dependent of the smartphone, and many times when I just want to check the time I end up at internet. Another thing worth to mention is that a good looking watch also is an ornament to a nice clothing! I recently ordered a Seiko solar watch, and it will not be the last.
Thanks for watching! Yes, wristwatches are technically obsolete in the world we live in today with “computers” in our pockets that tell perfect time but there is something about owning and wearing wristwatches that I think brings a simplicity back to life that we miss sometimes. It is nice to simply look at your wrist to check the time and admire the art of a beautiful watch. I agree with you too, checking the time on a smartphone can often suck you in to other things on the phone!
Speaking for the longevity of the rechargeable battries/capacitors, I have a Lorus (Read Seiko) kinetic watch that has been running reliably now for the best part of 30 years.
That's awesome! Thanks for watching!
Excellent video brother. I like how you break it down between all the different types of mechanisms.
Avg. Joe Watch Reviews Thanks for watching my friend!
I keep all my sun loving watches next to a window that always gets a good dose of UV - love those solar watches, as long as they are expose to any type of light, there is always unlimited power for the watches.
Can you damage the watch by overcharging?
Cartier makes a solar/quartz Tank watch. One of the few luxury solar watches. I have 2 Seikos SNE 497 and SNE 499 and they are both -1sec a month! The most accurate watches I own. I bought them both used. Fascinating!!!
Excellent video...I have a Casio Edifice solar watch and its great. My wife got it for my birthday for me 6 years ago and its still going no problems at all. I must admit she has great taste 😁 automatics may be the movement we all lust after but you cant beat the quartz for accuracy and the solar powered quartz for longevity 👍
Kevin Tyrrell Thanks for watching and commenting! That’s great to hear your Casio Edifice is still going strong! My Casio Pro Trek PRG-270 is going on six years old and has no problems at all!
Solar quarts watches have an accuracy of less than -/+4 sec per year...NOT 15 secs per day...
Thanks for the quick but clear explanation of the different types of watch mechanics (or movements). As a watch noob, this was really helpful for me.

I have a quartz and two automatics so far (cause I think they're great), but recently I found out about this solar ones ( I'm fairly new to this hobby). I think after doing some research and hearing people's opinions, soon I'll be adding one of these to the ones I own.

@@TheTownWatch Oh, I will 😉. This hobby is awesome!
@@TheTownWatch i own several automatics and they are reasonably accurate. 1 or 2 seconds per day inaccuracy. my everyday watch is an ecodrive, not atomic or satellite, but it has remained within a second for 3 months.
Hi great video covered all the corners. I have owned a Bering watch for 4 years and is ticking along perfect. Reason for going solar was that I only wear a watch very occasionally and didn't want to reach for one of the 4 I own to find I needed a battery change. Bering make a range for all occasions and are very low profile on the wrist and in the case of my choice, fine mesh strap come with a safety catch on the strap. Since my purchase they have become more competitive, I would heartily recommend 👌
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with Bering!
Very good breakdown sir. Well done, well thought out.
SaleenDriver Appreciate it! Thanks for the support!
No watch is without pros and cons. I have automatic, quartz and digital watches because they are exciting individually and for different occasions. But a watch was missing from my collection. So I bought a Casio Wave Ceptor (LCW-M100DSE-1AER) which has both solar and is radio controlled. It has a suitable size for me and features. However, I have put on a leather strap instead of the steel strap. Weight is 54 grams now, before 115 grams. I thought it was a good everyday watch. Good luck with the "time" in the future for all of you.
Ha! Glad I came across this channel, I've started my watch collection this year and I purchased 2 Solars and one Kinetic which I actually really like but was wondering if I made a mistake by not making my full collection all automatic or mechanical (becoming a borderline "Watch Snob") but your video has reminded me of why I purchased my Solars and Kinetic, Appreciate it!
Thanks for watching! I love watches of all kinds! Solar, mechanical, automatic, and everything in between!
Great explanation, thank you sir 😁

My favourite solar powered watch is the CASIO Wave Ceptor WVQ-M410-2AJF. Has all the classic Casio features: stopwatch, timer, world cities times, perpetual calendar, alarm but it's all analogue using three subdials to execute all the functions. On top of all that it has radio time reception. It's only around $100, excellent value.

Good video. I have subscribed to your channel with the hope you will continue to produce quality videos about watches. There is another type of quartz watch that also is run by a battery that is chargeable, but not by light, instead by mechanical means. Namely kinetic, which I believe is only produced by Seiko. The rechargeable battery in a kinetic watch is charged by the movement of the arm just like an automatic. There is a rotor in the movement that when engaged, sends a charge to the battery to keep it powered, and it also does not require changing every 2 or 3 years. It's a combo mech/quartz style so to speak. I have 4 solar watches, 2 Citizens and 2 Casios, and one kinetic. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed! I am somewhat familiar with the Kinetic movement from Seiko. Hope you’ll check out all of my other content and let me know what you think!

You should have also mentioned the KINETIC movement (quartz accuracy with electromechanically generated power, now somewhat out of favour) of which I have 4 (3 SEIKOS and a LORUS). However, my preference is now exclusively for SOLAR watches of which I own 1 SEIKO, 2 PULSARS (a SEIKO of sorts), 4 CITIZENS, 1 CASIO and 1 ESKEI. And that explains my love of solar: you can have a solid Diver, an Everyday, a fine Dress (that Stiletto is really thin!), a multifunction Sports and a really cheap (under £10!) multifunction Sports. All using the same reliable technology. But my main reason for loving Solars? They are all "ready to go" and require next to no adjustment, autowinding, etc, etc. I would (maybe) like a Rolex or Omega, but I just do not have the money - and they still would not be "always ready to wear.
Awesome! Sounds like you have a great collection of solar watches! Thanks for watching!
Since a week I'm the proud owner of a solar watch. A G-shock GST B500D 1AER. I don't think I'm gonna wear all my other watches. Maybe a few times a year. I just love my B500 more than any other watch I own! It's already my favorite. It's a G-shock... so very durable. It's accurate. And I won't have to worry about the battery for the next 20 or 30 years. And it's also a G steel. So it has some nice weight to it.

@@giadamino , actually, you are very wrong. Modern Seiko Kinetics use similar capacitors as there Solars, with a power reserve of at least six months and when they eventually run out of power, it only takes a few shakes to get it going again. I have two Kinetics and that is what it is.
@@giadamino , I agree about the Spring Drive being much more desirable, but it is also much more expensive; only available in Grand Seiko and a few very high end Seiko's. I doubt very much you can get a Spring Drive for less than $3000. And I love the mechanical feel of a Kinetic.

I have fast increased my collection. Within a short time I have got 7 watches. All light powered. 4 Citizens and 3 Seikos. Very satisfied with them! By the way: until recently I thought only Citizen and Seiko have light powered watches, but I see here there are some other brands as well. And I wonder why are the more expensive models not light powered? Having that said, I am actually tempted to get some automatic watch. The backside window of Seiko 5s showing the mechanism is cool! The bad accuracy makes me still doubtful, though. I read somewhere about 30-45s deviation per DAY with automatics!
Thanks for watching! Sounds like you have a nice collection of solar powered watches! Yeah you should try your hand at some automatics too, they’re fun! They do tend to lose or gain time each day but usually nothing too crazy unless you get something really cheap.

I'll definitely be adding a nice solar powered diver to my collection soon. Why aren't all quartz watches solar powered??? Great video thanks

@@TheTownWatch Thank you. The Seiko VS37A is powering a Bering Solar Chronograph, I bought this purely for is looks and got it for a very reasonable £55 plus import fees. I've been very pleased with it considering the bargain price it also gave me the confidence to track down a Seiko Solar Tuna (not so easy!) I particularly wanted a SNE497P1, and thought I had done so only to be informed that it had sold "moments before receiving my deposit" happily I have just received confirmation of a purchase of the required model. I think that it looks most like the stainless steel Marine Master and I will replace the black shroud with stainless steel. For me the solar powered movement makes a lot of sense, and I find it quite surprising that many people are unaware of their existence, especially given their environmental implications. When I found out that they can provide 20 years + of trouble free use (my friends father has had an Eco Drive Citizen since '91 which is still going strong)I decided my collection should definitely include them.
@@oktc68 Awesome! I’ve heard of the Bering brand, they make some nice looking pieces. Glad you tracked down a solar tuna too! Enjoy it!
@@TheTownWatch Hi, follow up on solar watches. My Bering Solar Chronograph manages +2 secs per month, it has the Seiko VS37A movement in it. My passion is really divers tho', and I've always drooled over Seiko's Tuna's & Turtle's but they're well outside my budget. I was delighted when they brought out the Prospex Tuna range and decided that I would get the SNE497P1 as to me it looked closest to the Marinemaster. I have to say that apart from it's aesthetic appeal (I have added a stainless steel shroud which I put on it when wearing with a Strapcode bracelet & the original black shroud looks great with an olive green nato, two watches in one!) but as a watch I was rather disappointed. +1 sec per 24 hours? Shoddy bracelet (just as well that I'd decided to change it before purchasing) I have two automatics that run at +1 sec per day. I also looked at a Prospex Captain Willard whilst in store and was able to handle it and examine it very closely, there's simply no way this watch is worth the £1,200 asking price. Side by side with my Steeldive homage of the same, it looked like it was the little over a hundred pound homage. I have replaced the clasp on mine and refinished the end links so that the fit is excellent. I didn't mind doing it given the purchase price, I enjoyed doing it in fact. I wouldn't expect to have to replace a very wobbly when closed clasp on a watch that cost almost 12 × more. Nor would I expect the bezel to be off kilter. Seiko have lost their way at the entry and mid level tiers, it is a terrible shame, they make inspired designs, brilliant movements and I'm told excellent expensive watches, but they seem only interested in selling over priced limited edition and poorly specced watches at the entry/mid level. I think most people expect sapphire crystal and ceramic bezels these days not to mention bezels that align. It's very sad like losing an old friend
Another advantage is solar watches usually have the width of a quartz watch which means they are skinnier and can fit under your dress shirt, suit jacket, etc.
Very true! Thanks for watching!
Totally agree!

Never heard that one! 😅 Thanks for watching!
Just bought a Bering Solar, surgical grade stainless steel case and mesh strap with sapphire glass, really nice quality blue 'collection' watch, I bought it because I have 2 phones for the other stuff, what's on my wrist just needs to tell me the time and date at a glance. It feels better quality than the Swiss Raymond Weil I owned (which died)
1:22.. yes, there is one.. its called the Seiko Kinetic.. lol.. with that said, i also wear a Casio ProTrek almost everyday.
👊👍 Thanks for watching!
PS To be fair I also have some Automatics: SKX007, a Black Monster, a Rotary Skeleton and my Dad's old Omega, but they do not get that much use, well except the Monster when I go snorkling :-) But all of them are well over 10 years old.
Nice!
I own a citizen eco drive. Works perfectly for me. Absolutely no maintenance needed.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Greetings, congratulations on the fine video. I have a question: do you know about those ORIENT watches that have KERS (Kinect Energy Recovery System)? Do you think they are as good as a solar watch?
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed! Sorry I'm not familiar with the KERS so I can't speak to it!
Loving my seiko sne573 ❤❤❤
Great video man just wanted to ask what model is the SEIKO that you were holding at the beginning of the video ?
Hey, I didn’t notice a Seiko, but any of the watches I showcased should be linked in the description.

Good Video but you forgot to say Citizen call there Solar watches Eco drive. Citizen was the first company to get serious with solar and light powered watches in the 90'S.
Thanks for watching!
I'm have a citizen eco-drive watch but the glass is scratched. if I were to change the glass will I mess up the solar charging mechanism? can I change it to something more resistant to scratches? (sapphire perhaps)
