Professional Artist Tries FREE ART APPS...I Can't Believe These Exist. 😬

Today I am trying some of the best and worst free art apps on the apple app store on my ipad pro. I haven't done this in 4 years now so I wanted to see what new apps were around! Some of these were 5 star apps, some I had to pay for in the app itself, from squishy painting apps to anatomy apps!
Check out a list of my art supplies/products here:
www.amazon.com/shop/chloeroseart
Ipad: My ipad is a 2020 12.9” iPad Pro. You can use many different types of ipads and sizes with an Apple Pencil, Check the apple website - it will tell you on each ipad if you can use the Apple Pencil!
Pencil: I use the Apple Pencil 2nd generation. This one chargers magnetically on the side of the ipad. I stringly do not recommend the first generstion pencil as it charges in the ipad port and is very easy to break.

  • I don't have an iPad so i don't know if this app is available for apple devices, but ibispaint x is THE drawing app if you want to paint digitally for free. In my opinion (as someone who uses primarily Krita to paint) it has everything you need as a digital artist: layers, blending modes, clipping layers, a bunch of brushes (most of them are locked, you'd have to either buy the full version or watch one add and get them all unlocked for like 8h the last time I checked. Only really needed if you want textured brushes other than that the free brushes are good enough). I love it and use it occasionally when I'm not in the mood to turn my computer on

  • I use magic poser on my android phone and it's quite different. Like I can't make a character skinny or fat. Maybe it's a different app but I doubt it. What I like about magic poser the most it's probably the lighting adjustments. You can change both direct light and ambient light depending on what you're going for. You can of course pose the model however you want. So you don't need to spend hours looking for a good reference photo. There's more than one model for different art styles: realistic, different manga/anime proportions. And probably props. You can on android buy props to add which are amazing. Like a chair or bed or desk. It helps with drawing poses more. If it was just a floating man trying to sit in my opinion I could never make it realistic. But with a table and chair I can make it more real and use the props as reference too for perspective. You can also change the colour to more fleshy or crazy if you're drawing some mystical creature. Also there are clothes for models and you can also remove underwear if needed. Sometimes I find the underwear being grey distracting. Like a flesh coloured model with gray underwear is kind of distracting for me. But anyway the models aren't 100% detailed in certain areas. There's also another cool feature called posecloud. Where you can search for poses made by others who share them in this cloud system. You can use them as is or edit them to fit your liking. Also you can save the pose as an image 1x/2x the screen size. And I use it for some of my digital drawings to trace over (like I did in a video of mine) or to have a still pose. To avoid accidentally touching the screen and move the model a kilometer away from where he was.

    • Unfortunately in the free version of magic poser you're very limited in what you can do and add, if you want to add more characters, make them skinny/fat, or add more props and such, you have to buy the full 10 dollar version. Which imo is pretty worth it even if I haven't bought it just yet due to financial reasons. But I use it all the time for poses and references since while CSP has nice 3d models, I prefer these ones a bit more.

  • One app I use a lot is called Medibang paint pro and I briefly saw it at the beginning of the video while she was scrolling through the apps and it's honestly pretty decent and easy for beginners and you can do a lot with it. The only downside is there's not that many brush options but even then you can still do a lot with the ones that are provided. I've been using it for months and I've even made a lot of detailed and complicated pieces so I reccomend it :D

    • oh, actually you can make your own brushes with the app! you can also import them. you just need to go into a canvas and tap on the brush selection menu, and there should be a plus button on the far right that will let you add your own brushes or adjust pre-made ones. it's really useful for making signatures for artwork without having to draw them out every time! hope this helps you! - B

  • This reminds me of a NerdECrafter style video. Chloe downloaded all these awful apps SO WE DON'T HAVE TO! 😂 Thank you for suffering on our behalf Chloe! You're the MVP! 💜 Edit- Watched the video now. So glad you found a really great app! I've seen the anatomy reference apps before and I might have to snag it now. This one looks fantastic!

  • Just to let you know that if you do have pro create you can to animation you just have to go the the wrench and go to the animation assistant! I use it so much and its amazing for duplicating and just moving the frame forward!

  • For Art Set, I've only used the free version, but to prevent the colors mixing, there is an 'air dry' option that basically kinda dries the paint almost

  • I dunno if anyone else has mentioned it or if people know already BUT texture layers. They’re one of my favorite things for making my digital art pieces look like they’re on a textured canvas. It just looks really cool too imo. If anyone is curious you can google about it and it should pop up. 💚💚💚
