Learn to travel -- travel to learn: Robin Esrock at TEDxVancouver

2024 ж. 25 Мам.
1 106 449 Рет қаралды

Robin Esrock's success as a global adventurer, travel writer, TV producer and international TV personality was no accident, although it did start with one. Struck down on his bike at a Vancouver intersection, Robin hobbled away with a broken kneecap, and one year later, a modest $20,000 insurance settlement. It was just enough for him pack up his things, quit his job, and set off on a one-year solo round-the-world backpacking adventure to 24 countries. He named his journey Modern Gonzo, and committed to record his year of living dangerously, with online weekly reports, photography, videos, and interviews with every person he met. In doing so, he pioneered a new era of multi-platform, switched-on and wired-in travel journalism, leading to adventures beyond his wildest dreams.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • I didn't have a lot of money and I have done 70 countries and lived in 9. One doesn't need a lot of money to travel. One needs a plan. Have many connections. And have skills to sell. The world exposes itself to us and we learn to go go go. I don't regret my life. Do I have many world possessions? No! But I have hundreds of friends in 7 continents and I speak several languages.

  • When you travel make sure to open your mind and heart for adventures. Do unexpected decisions, explore unusual paths that you wouldn’t try in the comfort zones and most importantly: talk to strangers, make new friends and ask questions. Your memories, stories and experience found during those days form the body of your life.

  • I'm traveling the world too. But, I'm retired (still in good shape mentally and physically) and kept my most important things in a small storage. Life is so simple without all the stuff and extra clutter. Living any other way makes you a slave to your stuff. No matter what you have you have to take care of it which means taking away your precious time for an animated object.

My students created a quote that sums up my philosophy which is "travel the world with an open mind and kind heart"... after watching this, I might add... with a smile on your face.

  • I got so tired during my study of my master, after that I spend a lot of time on the way. At first, I had no mood of new things or beautiful. Just threw myself out of the marsh. After a few weeks, things became a bit different. I started to talk to strangers along the way. And I was less depressed gradually. Now I move to a city I like and finally feel alive again.

    • Paul, your point is such a good one. There are interesting things right in one's city or country. For these people if they want to start out small what I recommend is that they check into a hotel right in their city. And spend the weekend roaming it. Go on a tour. Go to the museum. Go to the zoo. Anything. Just get out there. Start practicing. Then maybe next time you'll want to go to the neighboring state. And do the same thing.

    • Samuel H thats not the point, the solution he gave was not to the problem of bad things happening, but to the philosophy of choosing 1 out of 10 s also giving up on 9 out of 10... Its a really turn down for adventurous minds, and his solution is the simplest and efficient, wherever you are is the best out of those ten, you just have to make sure you trust yourself enough to believe and enjoy it so!

  • Hi, I am about to star my big journey. I come from Poland, after my final exams in highscool i decided that i want to make my vacations wild and i went to USA on my own. i've been there 3 months but mostly i was working. i saw few cool things but not as much as i expected to. But instead of it, i have money now.I went back to Poland.I already traveled like all of major cities and mountains in and around my country so far. I have my travels already planned to Italy, Germany, Ukraine and United Arab Emirates. Tons of people warned me about the last one but since i left USA i found out exactly what the speaker in video was talking about. Most of that "be careful, there is dangerous" talking is nonsense. Of course i am still a little scared still but excitment is taking advantage in this fight inside my mind. After those travels i will go back to USA and make my dream come true: Travel all the way through Route 66. What you guys think about it?

    • I think you need to re explore your feelings - panic is being out of control and not knowing what to do, being scared is pretty common and it is ok to be scared, but knowing what to do when you are scared is very useful, and can take some thinking about before hand - prepare for the unexpected - and think through worst case scenarios, and remember always everyone dies! - of course you can always stay at home and die of boredom doing a mundane job wishing you had travelled, or sit on the sofa watching TV and die through being a couch potato, or travel to work on a busy motorway and die in a car crash or keep waiting until you retire and then die, or then so unwell with painful joints, you can barely travel to the doctors surgery, or make any other excuse - 'well I have 5 grandchildren now and they need their grandparent around' How much more interesting and inspiring would grandparents be if they have a dozen or more travel stories of adventure to share at bedtime. ?
