Making The Call - The Beginnings of a Referee

Every year, nearly 40,000 referees lace up their skates to officiate minor league hockey games across Canada. That number includes nearly 5000 referees in Hockey Alberta. These referees range in age from 11 to 75, and each plays a key role in making sure the games are run smoothly and safely. This year, Hockey Calgary welcomes their newest referee - 13 year old Mason Rockley. We follow Mason's story as he learns the fundamentals through the Central Zone officiating clinics, and then goes on to his call his first game. HockeyXtra gives you a front row seat as Mason dons the stripes for this memorable occasion.
If your son or daughter would like to be involved with the Referee program, please contact your local hockey association for more information.

  • My first day on the job was I was reffing three consecutive Novice games. I finished the first game, and we got word that they actually mixed up the final two Novice games with Intiation “games”. (4-6 year olds) So I had to “ref” their games. It was funny seeing their reaction to a referee reffing their game. They were so excited. I had a blast. Now, I’m entering my second year and I love it.

  • Hope he continues to have great experiences and falls in love reffing. As great as these good games are, there’s gonna be many more games that require thick skin and hopefully he has it in him to keep going, despite their comments and jeers.

    @eastongrieve2455@eastongrieve24552 жыл бұрын
    • In Alberta, they do the one armband as the penalty and goal side like a headman and the non band arm for offsides and icings like a linesman for their 2 official games

    • @N0sc0p3 default lol trash talk doesn’t describe it. Hockey Canada introduced the malpractice rule this year (2021) and while there’s less tolerance for bullying kids on the ice and verbal abuse of officials, it’s definitely still occurring. The curse words I hear from 9 and 10 yr olds would blow your mind, terms adults don’t even use.
