you forgot to mention that you need to let the engine cool down first before you fill it with cold water again, that can cause the head to crack and warp due to the instant temperature change.
Thanks, this was really helpful. Will attempt this once my 1er is back on the road
Great video. Thank you. Saved me $$$ by doing it myself.
Definitely the best video showing this procedure out there!
Thanks for the video 👌
Hi George, Love your content, thanks for sharing. I have a 520D F11 from 2013, is the procedure same for this version of N47 ? Cheers.
Brilliant video mate, need to do this soon on my n52 530i!
I have a video doing it on the N52
Thanks I needed that today
You’re welcome, appreciate all your support Max!
Good work!
Thanks!
What size was the hose that you put on radiator drain plug 10mm
Hey brother I have a complete different question in regards to BMW, I have a N55 335i 2011 and recently installed new vanos solenoids and I got a P1260 code and an check engine light. Could you please tell me what it needs to be done? Thanks
I had my water pump go on me a few weeks back, main belt replaced, radiator reservoir replaced, pipe was cracked for coolant hence it leaked and caused it to seize… anyway, long story short, garage used their own LL red coolant but I could see the water pump working great, however the colour inside the coolant tank was kind of pinkish (not transparent) and you could see the mix of the old Holts Radweld Coolant Leak Repair mixed… so my car is easily hitting 115°C (luckily the pre LCI 335D so M57 engine) but the fan goes mental. My cheap steps I will be doing is flushing the system but using Wynn’s Radiator Flush as well… so I’ll follow your steps and definitely replace with the coolant I wanted to use - XStream G48. Would you say this could be my car issue? I have the temp internally at 28°C and full speed… car still reaches 90°C within 25min driving (below 70mph).
can we do full flush just from the radiator drain? should we drain from somewhere else too? i have watched the other video and i got a bit confused. thank you
Awesome video.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I'm using a distilled water coolant on my e60 n54 and the problem I have a electric water pump on it and the coolant does not have air releasing plug after bleeding it ,so how can I release the air and the bubbles from the coolant system line after the drain
Hi , car looks great , iv 06 reg 520d e60 , can u please tell me what should be normal coolant operating temp when engine is fully warmed up as my one only goes as far as 60c sometimes 67c, i had same issue with e46 that turned out to be egr thermostat. Thanks kerp up good work
Hi mate, could you post a link to where you bought the front engine cover? The plastic trim with the hole for the washer filler. I love the look of it, makes it look so much smarter.
It comes from factory?
My m57 had g12 for coolant but its brownish now and i need to change it, do i flush the remaining coolant, then fill it up with distiled water, then flush it again and repeat till only distiled water comes out? And then get the blue coolant and fill it up with that, because ive been researching for so long and i cant find an answer on how to do this, another thing, i can only find 1 bleed screw, i cant find another one anywhere
Hi George, love your channel, used loads of your videosfor working on my 118d. How much coolant in total did you use for the N47 engine? I have Xstream G48 which is ready mixed. want to make sure I have enough before performing the flush. Thanks!
The entire cooling system holds around 10L
Is it the same with x3 f25?
Is it blue or green coolant ?
Goods videos, good channel, I Suscribe ;)
Hi george how do you bled je cooler system for n47d20c. Thanks 4 info.
the previous owner filled it with red cooling water. is it now useful to swap with blue or just use red when refreshing. thanks for reply.. love from Amsterdam
Hello George - really likes your channel! Please Can you tell me - How many litres of coolant approx. bleed just after opening the red bleeding screw (4-5 litres)? Now I have just normal water in the coolant system so now I have to make 2-3 more flushes with destilled water to put standard water out and after that put approx. 5 litres of FEBI blue G11 coolant. Thanks a lot - PEACE!
About right yes!
what about engine block?
I think from watching another youtuber there might be a bleed setting on the head unit that you can activate and then you can hear air popping out the blowers.
Yeah I heard about that but think it’s only applicable to those engines with electric water pumps👍🏻 2 weeks since doing the coolant flush and no issues, still sitting at 87-90 degrees
kzhead.info/sun/d62xYNOXiXeLrK8/bejne.html
Yeah i've actually watched his videos and it's interesting to see but to my knowledge, the system on my car is a self venting system which is why there are no bleed screws.
Will that coolant be correct for the m57 engine? I heard people say use only bmw coolant ,im yet to do my coolant flush but unsure
Yes this is perfect
George it was not necessary to remove the intercooler to access the drain screw? on my e81 n47 i can't find this screw. it's probably behind the intercoller.
No there is no need to remove the intercooler 👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters weird. I already looked near the zone of the tubes of the Intercoller and I can't find the radiator screw. As mine has the steering wheel on the left and it is a serie 1 it can be a little different..
Use only Distilled water not deionised. Deionised is pure compared to distilled. BMW recommends distilled. This is bcus deionised water will eat away metal/gasket to balance itself, whereas distilled water already has the particles by default.
Don’t put the blowers on straight away, it’ll only take longer for the coolant to get up to temp. You only need them on to test for airlocks in the matrix. The coolant will flow through the matrix regargless if the blower is on or not.
I am 17 and just bought my first car, a BMW 525i. Are there any specific ways you would go about repairing paint chips?
Either live with them, try touching them up with a paint pen or you need to whole panel repainted
How big was that hose you connected to the drain? :)
Standard garden hose fits
Hello i have a 2012 x3 335i suv i was going to do the flush but i don't have a drain plug. I just trying to find the easiest way to flush the radiator without making a mess.I looked all through you tube and there's is no matching car like mine.
I was able to do the coolant flush from the reservoir hose and by turning on the coolant pump and it did a great job.
Should u not use distilled water instead of de-ionised water? Does it make a difference? Great video too well explained
De-ionised is better. Distilled does the job though!
By draining it this way is it draining all the coolant from engine and block so I can add different color coolant
You should only be using the proper blue coolant
@@GeorgeAusters right but since I got my car its had green coolant. I want to change that to blue. Can I just keep flushing water then add blue? Like is that draining it from the block of the engine by just undoing radiatior plug
@@radianm6 Keep flushing until it's clear like water
@@GeorgeAusters okay. Thank you
George, your water pump is belt driven yes, but I believe there is a small secondary water pump which is electric, the reason for having this pump is for when pressing the rest button on your climate control to keep warm air coming into the cabin for longer, if you activate the bleed procedure it runs this pump for 12 minutes without the engine running to force out any air
Interesting. Will give it a go mate!
George Austers it’ll come in handy if you encounter any air locks. But it seems a weak part as most cars pumps have stopped working, however it will make no difference whatsoever as it’s nothing to do with cooling, only way you’d know is it’ll throw an error code
Just tried it and nothing happened. Are you sure all models come with this feature?
George Austers I believe all N47 have this fitted yes. It wouldn’t work for me neither but then a scan on my car showed up a fault for it? Have you got the REST button on your climate controls?
does this work on n47 engine of a bmw 320d e90?
Yes
On my 2005 530i I can't turn that valve with a screwdriver because there is a pipe in the way, any tips?
Move the pipe over
do you know if its the same with a e87
Very similar, i will be doing e87 soon!
Can you put a link for the coolant please, want to make sure I get the right stuff, thanks
Here is the exact coolant Carl! amzn.to/3dKzpTj
@Lin Li hi, they can't even get the rear wiper size correct so I won't trust there computer to tell me about coolant, if I know the correct grade I know for sure then, thanks for advice
Do you know roughly the coolant system holds in litres? Thanks
@@BatmanReturnZBetween 5 and 10L
@@GeorgeAusters thanks , that including the deionised water?
Is your car the BMW F10 520d with n47 engine?
E60
How mutch km you got? Timing chain ever changed?
Watch my other N47 videos
George Austers watched but not all bro... So deed you or not?
Don't we need to bleed it after we put in the coolant?
Yes
Deionised water or distilled water? There's a big difference between them really
distilled
How do I know when a flush is needed versus just a coolant top off?
Coolant flush every 3-5 years or when the coolant gets contaminated
@@GeorgeAusters i mixed it 50/50 and filled it. Thank you sir. Sexy beamer btw. 😁
Could you see the coolant into the reservoir?
Sorry, did you see the coolant flowing back into the reservoir?
What is the purpose to a coolant flush ? Thanks !
To flush the old coolant out
@@GeorgeAusters can coolant get old or something ?
@@mainstream2092 it goes bad after a while esp if your oil housing gasket fails and mixes oil with coolant then u have choco milk in ur coolant reservoir lol then u must do this also
Am sure on your vehicle you can activate pump bleed without starting car does a 12 min bleed and cycles water around and bleeds air out
Only on cars with electric water pumps
@@GeorgeAusters Okay thank you am doing one next week thanks for your help
George, do you know if bmw x1 2013 has an electric water pump?
Aren't you supposed to run the electric coolant pump cycle?
This engine doesn’t have an electric waterpump 👍🏻
Well that's fair enough 😃
what inch hose
Standard garden hose
Hi! I found this explanation regarding bleeding of the cooling system in the Product Information Sheet od the N47 engine: "Bleeding At the highest point in the coolant circuit, a bleed hose branches off to the expansion tank from the coolant hose that leads from the engine to the radiator. At the connection to the expansion tank, there is a bleed screw for the cooling system bleeding procedure. This makes it possible to remove any air bubbles from the coolant circuit. During normal operation, this bleed hose carries coolant from the highest point of the circuit into the expansion tank. From there, it is fed vertically upwards through a pipe and through a very small bore, where the coolant reaches the coolant in the expansion tank. In this way, the coolant is calmed and any gas bubbles are left behind in the downpipe where a certain amount can be absorbed."
Yeah there MAY be on the E90 and E87 etc but there is certainly not on my E60.
Such a cowboy, didnt even bleed the coolant system. Will have air locks in the coolant passages
If you say so
You need to rename this. This is not the BMW procedure.
sorry, but your method is wrong. you will not get rid of all the coolant this way. also there is a specific bleeding method with vacuum machine filling. some other method supposedly too, but I am not sure if it's working
My engine was removed prior to this so yes, all of the coolant was removed :)
@@GeorgeAusters oh sorry, I deleted it. I thought u have 3.0 liter diesel. u dont so I dont know procedure for ur car....but there is a different procedure for 3l diesel.
@@martinkulik9466 Yes on the M57 engine there is 2 bleed screws
@@GeorgeAusters Where
This doesn’t replace/ remove old coolant from engine block ! So it’s just replacing coolant from radiator only which isn’t a full system flush 🤔.
It's why you flush, not just drain.. The coolant from the engine cycles back into the radiator.
this is stooppid... this is not "complete flush", this is multiple times repeated "partial flush" which is a basic thing. the question is how to actually do a real COMPLETE flush.
If you say so👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters hehe u r an ldiot. i also say that. complete flush is done by removing the plug/plugs from the block.
