Melissa McCarthy shares a letter she wrote to herself in her 30s filled with timeless life advice, including "go all in, you'll never get today back." Melissa and Kelly both talk about wanting to quit early in their careers, trying to live life without regrets, and standing up for yourself without tearing other people down. Melissa also reveals her most memorable walk of shame moment from college, and reacts to a home video of her sobbing after watching "Million Dollar Baby" for the first time.

  • This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. DONT ignore red flags, don't ignore that voice deep down inside of you telling you something isn't right or ok. Stick up for yourself.... in a kind way. But take care of you, because frankly, no one else is going to.

    • @@deecarter4658 And I am the queen of ignoring them or rationalizing things. I have sold myself short for so many years but I am FINALLY, at 45, learning to draw boundaries and STICK to them.

    • I think most people have a memory of a situation where they ignored red flags or simply didn't trust their gut when things didn't seem right. While we may have forgotten the specific red flag we easily remember the price we paid for not paying attention. Playing the "if only I had..." game is no fun at all but learning to advocate for yourself, and doing so, can be a significant challenge especially when you've been taught to agree, comply and accept what others put upon you. Fear of being reprimanded, criticized or perhaps losing an opportunity often keep us from standing up for ourselves. Unfortunately by not doing so we may be accepting by default discomfort, disrespect and even abuse. This is why it is so important to teach children to express themselves as autonomous individuals so they can develop the skills necessary to confidently represent their thoughts, ideas and feelings in personal and professional environments. Making yourself the most important priority is not selfish, it is an act of self preservation, self care and self love. When you take good care of yourself you are better able to take care of others in all aspects of your life.

    • No she’s not good. She turns almost every conversation about herself. She was asking Melissa about almost quitting then before Melissa even answered she interjected that she almost quit. Then the conversation shifted to her and Melissa never told her own story. This is such a common way Kelly conducts her interviews. And not to be mean spirited but if Kelly was like this during her marriage, then that could have played a part in the divorce.

  • Yes! Speaking up in the moment is HARD. Especially when you are in the minority or you are totally alone in that feeling or perception. Peer pressure happens ALL over the place. Pressure from people who say they are trying to do what's in your best interests when really they are not. To go against the current, especially against authority figures like your boss or your director etc is extremely difficult and frightening then 10 × worse if you are female.

  • I cannot imagine a world where either one of these ladies is not famous... Melissa McCarthy's work has been a delight, if I am sad or depressed or stressed I know I can throw on one of her movies and feel better by the end of it, because she is so good and the roles she takes are ones that have helped me a lot...more than most award winning movies have, noteable exceptions are Robin Williams movies, and thats because he did serious roles like no one else can, he can have you balling your eyes out one moment then dying of laughter the literal next moment, it's God level performance when you can do that. A world without Kelly's career and influence on music, no her music is astoundingly good, it has uplifted me, it has made me move to the music, it has made me cry and it has just made me feel alive in times that I otherwise was numb to everything else.

  • Melissa talking about us being called crazy and stuff when we are speaking about our feelings and having the sense of something’s not quite right is so true. I'm honest now; today, I felt that my son thinks or thought about giving up on life, and I talked about me feeling it with everyone in the family and his teacher too and having to feel that as a mom is so painful. My mom understood, but there was this moment of them thinking, I'm making it up. It even hurts writing it out into the open. I sincerely believe that talking about these issues has to become normal. Just because the other is not feeling or recognizing it on the surface doesn't mean that we're making stuff up or are crazy or that it doesn't exist at all. I said my truth and what the cause of it could be; they felt offended. But what am I supposed to do? Shutting my mouth because it couldn't be true or cause effort to look at it and watch it happen? It's necessary to speak up, and sometimes this shifts a situation, even if they choose to blame me.
