Shrouded in all black, flamenco garb and flanked by his very own angelitos at the Tiny Desk, Spanish singer Omar Montes is the shining embodiment of the contrasts he constantly plays with.
Dancing along the border of tradition and modernity - flamenco and hip hop - the artist recounts his story as a kid of Roma heritage growing up on the streets of Madrid, over the melodic heartbeat of clapping hands. Opening the show with “Patio de la Cárcel,” he trades synthetic beats for transitive horns and lays bare his soul with vivid bars about life in his barrio. Locking in his audience with a heart-thumping trombone line, he switches to flamenco-driven “Metió en un Lío.” Settling back into the beat of clapping hands, he and his band dance through the up-tempo “La Llama del Amor.”
Omar Montes walked into the building on a video call with his grandma - one of the most important people in his life. He closes out his performance with “Conmigo,” infused with the kind of romance you’d imagine his abuela taught him. “For you I would bring down the moon,” he coos. The Spanish artist exudes tradition and soul as he centers his barrio, his people, his familia in his show - bringing a little piece of Spain to the rest of the world.

  • Será cuestión de gustos. Pero qué bonita es la música al natural, sin colorantes ni conservantes, ni enlatada ni ultraprocesada, recién cogida del árbol y directa al corasonsito.

  • Omar Montes y NPR...pensaba que era imposible verlo en la misma frase escrito. Y realmente ha sido una sorpresa, una muy grata sorpresa porque esta sesión es realmente mil veces mejor de lo que solíamos escuchar de Omar y tiene potencial y mucha calidad. Rodeado de músicos, coros y una excelente producción musical como la de NPR, ojalá siga su carrera por estos caminos con "los Maleantes".

    • Cantaba bien flamenco ya de antes, pero decidía ponerse autotune y hacer canciones de regueton. Si lo buscas encuentras cosas suyas cantando flamenco, y suena bien. Cuando escuchen una canción suya con autotune recuerden que en verdad sabe cantar bien, no sé si se puede decir lo mismo de Bad Bunny 😂

Le he escuchado cantando flamenco con Isabel Pantoja cuando estaba en la isla de supervivientes todo a capella, en la playa, cantando Isabel y Omar, y Omar parecía un perro ahogándose cantando 😬 Si luego al final son todo opiniones.. jejejejej pero para como lo veía yo, ha mejorado mucho.   • Niiiice!! What a great look and sound. Never heard of Omar & his "Angelitos," but as a Hip Hop head (the "H's" are capitalized 😉), what a cool blend of flamenco, culture, and a blend of "bars".   • I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed this music. I was working on an excel spreadsheet and had this playing in the background and was really grooving with the music. I've listened to gypsy music before but not with brass instruments. Beautiful!

  • There’s so many reggaeton and hiphop artists that show a completely different side on tiny desk. They are so talented and have such great voices and energy when they try something different.
