Road to The Olympic Trials || 800 repeats at altitude ft. David Roche

It's 4 days until I race the 3k steeplechase at Payton Jordan Invitational. I will be attempting to qualify to the Olympic Trials during that race. This was my last tough session before race day, and it went well! I did 800 repeats at steeple pace and 200 repeats to practice my opening and closing speed. I'm currently training at altitude in Boulder, CO, so my coach, David Roche, was able to be at the workout. It was amazing to have his support, especially after the accident he was recently in. I'm so stoked about the progress I have made, and can't wait to take a stab at the Olympic standard :) #AllieOstrander #SWAP #OlympicTrials

    • It was so amazing to see David (and Megan) react the way they did to a serious bike accident (not saying how bad) on the podcast right after it happened (just fully empathy and love), and it was so nice to just see him on his feet and this happy (it seems like he's always like this and that could fully be true) and looking fine and maybe even riding a bike in this video.

  • Allie...please give David my very best wishes and prayers for a full recovery. As you know, I was on my road bike last June, and was hit from behind when a car ran a stop sign, and left for dead in an isolated area. I was very fortunate as aside from multiple fractures of the pelvis, a badly sprained shoulder, and bleeding from my face, arms, and legs, and a significant concussion, by the grace of God I woke up (being left for dead), and somehow got back on the bike and rode home. When my best friend came to take me to the hospital, I couldn't walk, and I crawled down the stairs and out the front door to his car. When I arrived at emergency, from internal bleeding, the docs didn't think I would survive a 30 minute ride to trauma care, and didn't know if I would last long enough for a blood transfusion as my heart rate dropped to 30. But those great docs saved my life. I was then on a walker for 6 weeks, and got back to running about 10 weeks later. I wanted to share with David who has an exponentially better record and career with running and cycling than me, of having had one good friend who had just gotten her pro triathlete card. She was 39, and was killed riding her road bike, along with 4 others whom I would see many weekends. I also have three friends of friends being killed while on their road bikes. Then my ICU nurse was a great cyclist, told me he is likely quitting cycling, as I was his 4th patient of the week. Also, Shawn Bradley, former NBA player, all 7'6" of him was hit while riding his bike one block from his home (how does one not see a 7'6" guy riding a bike???) in St. George, Utah, which is a pretty calm place, and tragically became a quadriplegic. I quit riding the road bike, believing that the risk of catastrophic injury may be too great. Also a bud who was a 2:30 marathoner was hit on his road bike, and it took him years to not get back to where he was. With that, your training is truly impressive, and you are in excellent, excellent shape, and really strong! I mean 800's in the snow and at altitude under 2:30, and 200's just a half tick or so over 30...that is great! Wishing you an amazing race, and I realize that placing takes precedence over time, but I think you will be strong and fast. If I were to guess....a new PR! Go Allie!

  • I really love the combo of you and David working together (though that photo of him was jarring, I'm glad to see it looks like he is doing better). He is an impressive runner in his own right with a great 50K just a few weeks ago. At some point I also felt like I heard him (or read in his book?) that he would rather his athletes be 20 pounds overweight than 1 pound underweight because fuel = fast (I'm sure I'm not getting the quote exactly right). If both of you would be comfortable talking about it that could be an informative topic for a future video. Love your attitude going into the Olympic Trials and also hoping to see you on the trails sometime later this year.
