  • The other day I was retrieving a $2 fly stuck in a willow bush and had set my rod on the ground... stepped back, got my foot stuck on a rock, fell on my butt directly on my Fenwick 6wt and"SNAP!" right in half. So I went to the truck, got my 4wt, and continued fishing. Skunked. What a day.

  • Haven’t done that..but last year broke 2 rods in 30 minutes 😑. First the truck door barely caught the tip of my 4wt laying across bed cover. 1/2 hour later using 5wt, fly hung in bush..yanked to get it out..Snap! By chance had my 6wt also..fished Very carefully the rest of the day 😂. I could fix tip of 4wt and TFO replaced 5wt section for a small shipping fee. Sorry for your loss of flies Dan.🙁 Maybe get a big magnet, I have a 48”rolling one for nails on jobs. Picked up countless hooks and some flies in grass along river banks also. Have a great weekend Flyfish! Fish On! 👍👌🎣

  • Darn. It happens all the time. I live in Wyoming and wind blows strong all the time. I never use those magnets fly box. Always have your wind behind your back and use fishpond tacky fly box. Even then I loose few flies that fly off. Lesson learned. Tight line.

  • Took up fly fishing again after I retired. Bought some entry level equipment. First few times out I took it easy. Found a nice place to enter the river fairly clear for casting and had a great time. So I decided to step it up and hike a mile and half through some rough terrain to a place I fished in my twenties. By the time I got to the “SPOT” I had ripped a nice hole in my waders, lost half the tools attached to my fishing vest and damaged my new net. It was at least $300 replacing these items. I’m reloaded and ready to do it again 😂😂😂! Thanks for the share! I think I’ll stay away from those magnetic fly boxes.

  • Here's my $300 (probably less...) GONE story, FFD. Lived north of your neck of the woods, circa 2010 or so. Used to fish with a small waist bag that contained my spare G Loomis reel spool with sinking line and ALL of my accruements including flies, which at the time fit in only one fly box. I left the bag at a lake one day and yeah, never got any of it back. The only saving grace is that I was still in my "I fly fish and spin/cast fish" phase, so I didn't have the kind of sling full of everything I bring to the river now. Sorry to hear about your flies, flying away 🙃 - but they'll make more. ☮ from Idaho.

  • My heart ACHES for you (or more specifically your pocket book). It wasn’t long ago I was looking to buy one of those magnetic flyboxes similar to the one I owned when I started fly fishing in Yakima back in the early 1990s. Now I’m going to seriously reconsider that idea. $300 is nothing to sniff at if you’re like me and don’t tie your own flies. I’m really sorry this happened to you. 🙃

  • In late July 2017, on my birthday, the water in the Sierras was still very high. I walked out on a log over the middle of the river, not realizing my vest pocket was unzipped, and out fell my double-sided fly box, chalk full of flies - over a hundred dries in the one side, and that many nymphs in the other side. Gone. The river was running a little too fast, and the banks were a little too brushy to try to chase it down. I had three flies left for the day - one on my hat, and the two on my rig. That was a rough birthday.

  • My brother and I were fishing the Yakima river canyon last year, and he found a double sided large box stuffed full of dry flies. One of the gaskets was leaky so half were rusty. I’ve never had my flies blow away in the wind though… yet.

    • Someone probably dropped that box in the river and away she went...fish long enough, and it will happen!

      @FlyFishDan@FlyFishDan15 күн бұрын
  • Nope, not in 30 years. When I started out flyfishing in the 1990s, I had a couple wheatley boxes with the spring lids. I had an accident very similar to yours when I opened a few of the small bins and a gust of wind took the flies and they were gone. A week later, so were the boxes as I sold/traded them and went over the foam lined boxes I have used ever since.

  • A fishing tip from me: only being as many lures/flies as you need to fish with for the day. I typically bring 2-3 spinner for my entire day of fishing so I don’t have to worry about anything happening to an entire tackle box. Fish on.

However, I have dropped a brand new reel spool with a brand new $100 + fly line on it in a lake, lost a cell phone in a lake and I broke my favorite rod earlier this week :( I just tell myself "if you spend enough time on the water sh*t happens".
