  • 1st, You should have designed in ‘crumple zones’ (like a car) so that the case would fail before the camera broke, like an egg drop, 2nd, you can increase the strength of FDM 3D print layer-by-layer by putting it in the oven at a certain temperature (that varies between substances) to ‘temper’ it, basically melting the layers a little and increasing adhesion 3rd, with ABS you can do vapor smoothing, which may or may not increase strength 4th, musket sticky thingies are called *sabots

    • I'd like to take a look at a copy (image) of the SD card. However, if the shot was done in multi video mode (1 file per camera for later stitching), a recovery would not be viable. As far as I know, the Insta360 records in mp4 and that is a hell of a format. For reference, a healthy raw (not edited) file recorded with the same device and settings would be good.

    • 3D printing is actually very unpredictable because you might think you’ve designed something to fit and you did all the maths, but then it turns out that it’s a couple of mms to short or too big which can be due to some unaccounted for error like bad measurements, plastic expansion, burrs or other problems in 3D printing. Talking from experience

  • OH YOU DID NOT PUSH THIS TO THE MAX. Do a google search for model space rockets. you can attach rockets and parachutes to the camera, launching it so much higher than that. Do it near spencers cabin in the desert or something cause that thing flies. its not like its anything new, I saw a friend shoot up one of these rockets in 1998. They are probably way more advanced now. its cheaper than breaking another camera!

  • Hey yall, couple suggestions for your print, if you try this again sometime: 1) print with white nylon. Its crazy strong (basically weed wacker string), it's flexible so it bends, doesn't break, ever 2) design the nose of the device to have crush zones, like mostly hollow but setup to crush on impact, so it slows down the mortar and absorb the force without spreading that force into the camera. 3) Maybe you could setup a system so after the mortar has reached top height, and tilts downward, it releases a parachute and slowly drifts down. One way you could do that is like maples seeds, they spin when they fall off the tree, so they fall very slowly and drift a while in the air. Also, musket stuffer is 'wadding'. You're basically making a 'sabot' aka two-stage cartridge. Maybe you could use this footage for some more Spiderman / Gopro? That would be awesome. Best of luck, looks really cool. Let me know if you want any suggestions for setting up a microcontroller in the mortar to control release of parachute or other device based on tilt/elevation/etc, it would be fairly simple.
