  • I always felt like George Foreman laid a good blueprint on boxing for street defense, he had a good go to cover up that worked for him and always had a good control game

    • George Foreman was 6'4. Too many people forget what to look for in styles.

  • Thanks, Brother! I was telling my nephew this, who disagrees. Yes, I learned and fought with the boxing fundamentals, but it wasn't until I learned how to incorporate my longest limbs (legs) through studying Kung Fu, which assisted with multiple attacks. He still disagrees with me because his boxing coach tells him you don't need to kick in street fights. I believe in having multiple tools in the toolbox. Again, I'm now in my 50s, and low placed kicks, not high kicks were the game changer for me. Keep up the good work.

    • His boxing coach wants to keep him there! lol. For sure, boxing alone will not cut it.

  • How about the Tyson peakaboo style? I'd like his opinion on that.

  • A good example of a basic boxing style that works for bare knuckle was bobby gunn. He is fighting bare knuckle under certain rules but his clips you can see him have opportunities to do certain things that involve the clinch etc. Boxing can work but it has to be adjusted for other things. Petr yan is a recent guy I think does well with a standard boxing style for ufc. Now self protection is different when weapons come into play. Most people I think would default to "the fence" that Geoff Thompson talks about when is comes to knife play. That stance seems more practical than a standard boxing stance.

    • @mr.Blackman3312: My only issue with Gunn is that he fights from a crouch generally. NOT the best style, but he can do it because not many people are bigger than him. Yan is great. The "fence" is NOT a fighting position per se. It is to maintain distance and keep the hands in a position of defense without intel.

  • Coach I've been watching tons of videos of classic pugilism before gloves and the emphasis was on body punching. Should we focus on the body on the street to prevent hand injuries?

  • Great job on explaining boxing for self defense Dr. Carmen. When I started sparring in karate I noticed many point fighting student were developing quite stupid habits just to score a point that would get them killed on the streets. In my opinion point fighting is great for developing great kicking techniques and distance management if done right. If done wrong bad over reaching punching and sloppy defense becomes a habit.

  • Thank You for the content is very high Quality data, I got a question, if some one with the agresive bare knuckle boxing style of Mike Perry attacked me on the street, What combat sport/martial art style do you think it would help me to stand a chace against that attacker? Thankyou again.

    @antonioflores425@antonioflores42513 күн бұрын
    • @antonioflores425: Sir, I want you to think for a moment: Before Mike Perry was fighting bare knuckle, everyone did not think he was a fighting lord! Now, after some impressive victories people do. The truth is this: Mike Perry fights like a fighter should: like he has nothing to lose. Most of his opponents don't fight that way and he imposes his will on them. To beat him is very hard because of his will and approach to fighting. That is commendable, but not super human. That said, I can name many people who you would have to shoot or stab if they got angry and attacked you! lol.

  • Salaams. Great analysis as ever. However, doesn’t height come into it? If you’re much shorter then the cross guard like Archie Moore or reverse cross guard like Gene Fulmer would allow you to use your elbows to destroy incoming hooks. In a street fight these usually present as wild swings. In my experience as a youth, though considerable I admit is dwarfed by yours, is that the overhand right is your main issue so mixing it up like Qawi Mohammad could make you an awkward target. However I get your scenario even a short fighter can charge forward and be presented with a myriad of grappling and dirty boxing opportunities from a high guard.

    @claytondingle7476@claytondingle747613 күн бұрын
    • @claytondingle7476: A lot of people will make it difficult and call styles "ear muffs", "peek a boo". Forget all that ego stroking! it is a HIGH GUARD. Period.

  • I look at boxing like an entre to a meal. Sure it might be a nice juicy steak filled with protein and nutrients but where’s the sides? Where’s the other nutrients you need to function throughout the day that just a steak by itself won’t provide?

    @crypttorque681@crypttorque68113 күн бұрын
    • @crypttorque681: Yes, BOTH. The reason I mentioned the 2 I did is because they are MORE FLUID in changing hand positions. But yes, those 2 you mentioned are there also. As well as Marlon Starling, Joshua clottey, even Manny had a high guard most of the time.

  • Its peekaboo

    @maskedman5657@maskedman565713 күн бұрын
    • @maskedman5657: It is NOT the peek a boo! The HIGH GUARD was being used before the name peek a boo was known or heard. I am old school. Keep it simple man. People will run out and do the peek a boo and get stomped to death. Next, there are small maneuvers that are NOT from ANY Tyson video or any peek a boo fighters style. Learn and listen.
