Name that Cue - Understanding What Your Newborn is “Saying”

If you wonder ‘why is my baby crying?’ or ‘how will I know what my baby needs?’, it may help you to know about newborn cues - the universal language of babies. Newborn infants display instinctive behaviors that help to communicate whether they are ready to play (engagement cues), ready to eat (hunger cues), or they're full, gassy, working on a bowel movement (poop cues), sleepy (tired cues), overstimulated (disengagement cues), in light or in deep sleep. Learning about cues, and responding to them promptly can help to reduce infant crying and help you feel like a more confident parent.
For lots more information on caring for a newborn baby, listen to my 20 minute podcast episode on the Transition To Parenthood podcast, or read the transcript at www.transitiontoparenthood.com.

  • This video, might be simple in design, yet it was the most memorable source of info I came across before having my baby. It helped me a lot as it's highly accurate. I still giggle when my baby has the 'mysteries of the universe' face

  • My little dude is just hungry and gassy, hungry and gassy all day and then sleeps like a rock a night (knock on wood), although he wakes up pretty early. We’re figerin’ it out tho, day by day, nap by nap. He’s growin like mad too, way ahead of the doctors’ schedule. They say we’re doing everything all right but it’s damn hard keeping up with him. I don’t understand how everyone does it. But I’m told it only gets easier, than goodness. 😅

  • Thank you for mentioning the option to hold baby bare bottomed over a toilet or sink. We do elimination communication so he poops either in his little potty or over the sink. I find it so counterintuitive to know your baby is about to poop or pee and just sit there and let them mess their diaper. Why not just put them over a potty to let them do it like that and save a diaper, reduce diaper rash, and save time? It’s so much more hygienic

  • As a doula (and mother), I can that this is SO on point! Thank you for this video, there are so many “bad” ones out there! Your baby is learning to poo, they’re not necessarily constipated! Mammas out there, second babies are there to make you question what you know - they are uniquely different, but you can work this one out too! Learning wind is particularly hard for breastfed babies, because it’s far less of an issue - but it’s still a possible issue! Overstimulation is the most distressing cry from your baby, but the hardest to spot as a new parent.

  • At 10 minutes. Perfect example of babies don’t want to soil themselves if they don’t have to. They give you these cues so that you know the same for them to go so that you can take their diaper off and let them go and not have it get all over them. Just like any other animal they don’t want to soil themselves. It’s only when they get older and you’ve trained them to go in their diaper that they don’t hesitate.

We shared such a strong bond and One thing I remembered so well that, his sleeping schedule was a bit off, but whenever I held him, he slept right on my arms. not only him, but mostly when I hold any baby, they sleep right on my arm. He wasn’t getting enough nutrition and he was super gassy. Once I fixed the fat content in the milk, then he settled down and stopped crying. It really depends on what works for each family but this helped the most for us.

My husband used to pat them low and gradually move up their backs. Try sitting up holding their head up, like in the video. Even massaging their back or tummy laying across your lap, then upright and patting again. As they grow it gets easier and soon they won’t need you to help them! You wrote this 2 mos ago, so I hope you are doing much better. Enjoy your baby, as they’re only babies for a short time😊
