  • One small misconception here. The Alduin in Skyrim that we fight is not the devourer. The one we’re up against in Skyrim got catapulted forwards from a previous era and is still the Tyrant. He’s not seeking to destroy everything, he’s seeking to control everything.

  • I'm playing with a mod atm called Unslaad Mar. It's a dragonpriest overhaul. It makes a lot of changes but the one that sticks out is, each dragon priest grants Alduin various magical and physical protection so if you don't take them down first, he's nigh unbeatable. So hunting down the dragon priests actually links to the main story too, which I always found weird that they don't. Something similar for the original story, like Alduin having an actual command structure that you can take down to weaken him and some other power bases besides Skuldafn, would have done a lot to flesh out the dragon cult.

      @iphone777@iphone77711 ай бұрын
    • @@iphone777well considering 99 percent of the npcs are non essential I think a dragon attack killing all the people in the city would be terrible. Especially since every time you fast travel there's at least an 70% chance a dragon is going to attack you. It would make for a very terrible game. Especially before getting dragon rend (which is useless anyway because the dragons just fly far away and wait for the spell to wear off). It would especially suck for a warrior character. Most of the time the dragons just keep flying around spraying you with fire or ice and there's nothing you can do. So making the dragons realistically powerful would simply make for a bad game. You wouldn't even be able to upgrade your thuums until you beat the entire game, because you'd need to beat Alduin so they could give you the (hopefully more powerful) dragon rend shout. The dragons are pretty tough. Especially for a melee character. The older the dragon the less likely they are to land. Half of the people playing probably do so with mods so it makes sense it'll be easier for you. I don't use mods and as a new player it's a tough game to beat. Even the dragr are tough.

  • It's probably an unpopular opinion but I don't think Alduin should have been the main villain, mainly because they made him canonically way way way too powerful (in the lore he is a god). He should have at least functioned similar to how Mehrunes Dagon did in oblivion, a figure so powerful they cannot be fought directly unless by another god, so instead you fight his followers who increase his influence on Nirn. So I think Uriel V would have functioned as a more fitting villain in my opinion.

Compared to mehrunes who gets dapped by my dude mantling akatosh, but its still wack how they did it in Skyrim. It's like doing that cutscene but putting lore foreshadowing in shitty visual effects that don't age well. @mappingshaman5280@mappingshaman528011 ай бұрын
    • That sounds to me like why they didn't do it. The Empire's response when a prior emperor arrived with an army of dragons would be "hell yeah, time to roll those Thalmor blankety blanks." He'd have to be roasting his own people that he wanted to rule again despite that acclaim, which would be hard to explain well.

      @westrim@westrim10 ай бұрын
    • @@westrim I think he would make for an interesting DLC or side villain, where he wants to kill you for whatever reason (possibly for being a rival / potential threat as a dragonborn). Maybe he was the one who arranged your execution at the beginning of the game. He'd also be a powerful emperor who is probably going to bring greatness to the empire again and destroy the Thalmor. Many would cheer for his return. Then, the player would be presented with many interesting choices. Do you choose to crush the empire's hope of Rebirth in order to get your revenge and claim his power for yourself? This would be a very neat way to tie in the Thalmor as well, since killing them always feels great. The Thalmor would be especially keen on killing both you and the returning emperor. There's also the matter of the remaining Mede dynasty. They certainly wouldn't be very happy about an emperor from a previous dynasty returning. I imagine they'd try to recruit you.

    • Alduin in game is the corrupted aspect of akatosh and possibly lorkhan too if lorkhan really does end up being part of aka. There seems to be a trend where corrupted beings have this ebony motif, daedra especially have this imagery where black chunks form a shell or make the body that is influenced by these primordial forces. As if this is the difference between aedra and daedra, alduin tends to apear in religions that are older but doesn't have a negative view of alduin but as a part of nature cause it was another word for akatosh who is the cycle of the universe restarting. Alduin being the corrupted shedding of akatosh maligned the image and was made to be distinct by the perception of newer cultures having to deal with this new daedric aspect of time with no oblivion realm of its own. At the end you crack that shell releasing the pure aka juice inside to return to the flow of time. Hell could also be as simple as, this alduin was just a dragon who took up the name. Dragons aren't really born but they're turned into permanently by mortals, they were introduced to tamriel mainly by the original akaviri nords. I feel parthunax could also be trying to keep this from public knowledge

The ancient dragon cult, all the ancient dragon sites, and the idea of the dragonborn itself would probably not have existed in the game or the lore if Bethesda had gone with this concept. That being said, having a long lost/long thought dead emperor return to his people as an enemy bent on reclaiming the empire is such a cool idea!! But I think there are no fantasy experiences more immersive than the first few hours of each elder scrolls game. They all lose steam and don't live up to the promise set by those early hours, especially in regards to environment and enemy variety (which is something that really lets the writing down, underselling the stakes and making all the early game build up seem silly imo), and they seem to be steering in a design direction that I don't believe plays to the strengths their earlier games had.

Besides, I feel like Uriel V should be a good guy. He’s quite possibly the Empire’s last chance at regaining Akatosh’s protection. Bethesda may have swapped out Uriel V as the main villain but they never scratched the possibility that he’s still alive.

That being said, I like your idea a lot, but it feels unlikely that one of Akavir’s snake men would manipulate Uriel V given how quick and easy they are to bowing to a Dragonborn, let alone control him. Though not impossible, imo. It would be interesting to try and save the Empire from such a puppeteer while the Thalmor are breathing down your neck trying to strike the same place for their own reasons. Stopping them would then prolong the Second Great War and buy the Empire more time to prepare for the inevitable conflict against the Thalmor-controlled Aldmeri Dominion. Even some High Elves hate the Thalmor.

    • @@teleportedbreadfor3days I wonder how they'd work in the dying of magic. Magic is fading pretty quickly from the world- not just as game mechanics, but by skyrim everyone is essentially in a dark-age in terms of magical attunement. Most artifacts found are not understood in the slightest beyond being "very powerful". It's highly likely that during the great war both Adlmeri and Imperial militaries were conscripting or otherwise 'burning' up mages trying to kill each other off, so a lot of the intellect and study associated with magic was rapidly extinguishing during the great war.

      @blackwoodsecurity531@blackwoodsecurity53110 ай бұрын
    • @@blackwoodsecurity531 If that’s really the case, there’s a theory the Thalmor are trying to reshape reality through actions like outlawing the worship of Talos. I know a lot of magical guilds were forced to shut down after the Great War ended miserably and the Thalmor finally got the chance to gain a foothold in Tamriel but if what you said about magic ‘fading’ is true, then it’s possibly the Thalmor are keeping all the magic for themselves to cultivate power and weaken the mortals they find so disgusting. I mean I’m not sure it’s true but given how the Thalmor are so ambitious that they tried to start another Oblivion Crisis before the Battle of the Red Ring just to win the war, I can’t completely dismiss it. They’ll do anything to weaken the enemy and get what they want, it seems. Although I’m not certain what exactly you’re referencing when you mention people not knowing how powerful certain artifacts are and all. If you’re thinking of the events of the Skyrim game, the Nords never had a trust or general like for magic for a while, anyway. They’re warriors who therefore really have no need for it and their distrust for magic only increased after the art’s involvement in the Oblivion Crisis. I’m sure magic will have a sudden spike in activity once the people rebel against the Thalmor and the Second Great War begins. An Empire who hates the Dominion living in their backyards surely does a lot of things the Thalmor don’t want them to in secret, the same self-absorbed bastards who don’t hide their distaste and intent very well, like, at all

That is: Uriel V is still alive and has amassed power in Akavir. (And now there Nerevarine is there too, if in-game gossip from Oblivion is to be believed.) And it makes sense. Long ago, Akaviri armies had come from to Tamriel in search of a Dragonborn and found Reman Cyrodiil and swore fealty to him. Later, a Dragonborn went to Akavir; seems natural to me to think that they would eventually recognize him as Dragonborn and do the same.

Then, you have a member of the Septim dynasty vs an unknown outlander. But as I've seen being said, this is Bethesda we're talking about. Uriel V may sound cool conceptual wise, but what we'd likely get is no different from what we got with Alduin.
