    • It's because he used to be deaf.

      @dpalmerama@dpalmerama2 жыл бұрын
    • @@dpalmerama Interesting... but not every former deaf person is a good listener. Having experienced deafness MIGHT make someone have more empathy, better manners, genuine interest...but it is definitely not a guarantee. I knew a girl who was mostly deaf whose parents spoiled the crap out of her during her deaf years, during and after her surgeries and even after she was a fully hearing person again. She routinely stomped all over every conversation in her earshot...even those she wasn't part of. She listened to no one and talked over everyone...peers, elders, children, strangers, EVERYONE. She did it at her sister's wedding. During the vows. Her sister married a profoundly deaf man who was a lovely man, sympathized a bit with spoiled girl because he thought parenting was to blame and was very forgiving so spoiled girl got second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth chances...with predictable results. I truly think Malkovich has lovely manners and it isn't just his personal history. But I love learning that about him. He's a favorite actor of mine.

The pretend questions are just a method of setting them up for the joke or the story they want to tell. It's a very transparent ruse designed to make you think the guests are all these quick witted charming people that always have something entertaining to say.

      @Rowgue51@Rowgue513 жыл бұрын
    • @@Rowgue51Yes, many shows have some prescripted questions but not all of the questions and responses are. You need to have some organic conversational talk to keep things moving. Based on how he was silent afterwards, I don't think that was scripted. People tend to ask Aisling questions about her romantic life. Women comedians, in general, are asked more about their families and less on their content and stories. Male comedians do not need to dodge family questions nearly as much as women do. That was what I was getting at.

One day i went up to her door to get the cash for her shopping and Christopher Walken answered the door lolol. I actually had no idea who he was at the time, but he came up and met my mum and dad and they told me later who he was (my mum and dad had no idea i was doing this old ladies shopping every day for 4 years.

  • aislinn deflects the 'romantic life' question beautifully, making it into a gentle joke... and the bit about merit is well-placed, pointing out gently she might not like to see herself as a 'here because of my looks' type female guest... nicely done. lots of comments about the question being sexist.... i just see it as having a condescendingness to it, and sort of implying a certain vapidness or great need to concentrate on finding a mate in the female guest, or struggle to find one... and a way to sort of wish to 'have power' over the guest by steering them into very intimate territory, belittling them somewhat.... and it's such a very common, apparently "harmless" question about whether someone is still on the market or not... though Jonathan's way of asking ("dating out there...?") was more along the lines of "you're having trouble finding a partner, aren't you...".... difficult to find the right words to describe it all, not my first language, so that's the best i can do :) .... in talk shows, these things are likely scripted of course, especially with comedians, to set up for a joke or some funny anecdote...
