  • The ‘plaster’ you were scraping off the mirror is called Gesso…gives a very smooth finish. Old mirrors were gessoed before red ochre, then gilded.

    @xaxmac1948@xaxmac19482 жыл бұрын
  • You can use 'air drying clay' to make copies of the rosaces, just press it into the mold scrape off the excess then take it out carefully, lay it on some greaseproof paper and keep going, that way you don't have to wait if plaster to dry each time and the airclay doesn't shrink. The clay exists in different colours, white, grey, terra cotta etc. With the same clay you can roll out sheets and cut strips to use as the links between the rosaces. Just an idea.

  • I took an informational course on gilding once. The white is actually a layer of gesso, then the red was a clay slip applied to it. I believe the next layer was rabbit skin glue, followed by the gold leaf which was applied with a special brush made up of squirrel hair I believe. The brush was wide and thin and used static electricity built up in it to hold onto the gold. After it was applied, they burnished the gold with a special agate stone to polish it. It was very fascinating to watch. Hope this helps.

    • Exactly. The red is called “bole” and goes over the gesso, which is sanded really smooth. If you’re not using real gold, you just need a smooth surface, the size then the faux gold. I often will use a coloured paint and then you can lay the gold or silver roughly with tiny cracks that will show the colour … it’s just an effect that makes thinks look aged.

  • Gorgeous chandelier! I can see why you fell in love with it 😍 I would leave the top rail of the dining room as it is white. And don’t bother repainting it wood. It makes the ceiling look taller and it also makes the top wooden details shine through with white being the background! You have enough wood in the dining room as it is, no need to give yourself extra work. I think the mirror will look amazing once it’s put back to gold. Keep doing what you’re doing guys xx

    • @That's What I Like - I agree with you. I love the white above the ornate wood trim on the walls. It shows off the detail of the trim so much more than before when it was matching brown. I had no idea how much detail or how lovely the wood on the walls is till the white showed it off or made it stand out so well. The white down to the ornate wood work takes the detail up another level or three. It shows off the great care taken in designing this room, way back when. 👍👍👍👍👍

  • Thank you for all the technique details. I love it. The wall paper is very pretty and goes perfectly with the wood. I wallpapered ages ago in my first house. My told me to do an ever so slight overlap, which I did. The paint on the wall that you did at the seams is brilliant. I’m getting close to having the time to paint a detailed stencil on just a small bedroom accent wall. I plan to use two background colors painting them on like a lime wash, then stencil the pattern, next hand paint the patterns in 2-3 shades of each respective color, and lastly add fine gold detail by hand. (“Majorelle” by Royal Design Studios).

When the mirror is gold leafed and the plasterwork restored, the room will be spectacular. Everyone needs a reliable friend and you certainly have one who saved the day. Great vlog as usual. • So happy you got the chandelier you really wanted. You will be much happier in the long run than settling for something else. I hope you can source enough trim to go around the wall papered areas, it was a perfect match and those details really matter. What an awesome fabric store. I can see why you spent hours in there. The fabric you chose looked very nice. Sorry about you van issues, it is always something. Good luck.

Cannot wait to see the wallpaper on the walls! The ceiling is much better, will you be gold leafing the ceiling rose? or adding some gilding? You and Adrian are doing such a wonderful job of restoring the Chateau! The attention to detail and the color choices are impressive. Stay warm and rest.

  • It's not plaster under the gilt mirror! I also wouldn't sand or scrape it all off either unless you absolutely have to! Gilding prep work is VERY hard and VERY time consuming. At least if you want to do it in the way it was originally done. Also, you should be able to see what color bole (red or yellow were most common in France) was originally under the gilding. I've been working on re-gilding an antique Italian baroque carved headboard and it is not fun. I've not made it past the bole stage yet, and in some places not even the gesso layer (and that can only happen after you fix any missing parts or fill in any cracks). but best of luck!! I would watch some gilding videos on youtube, they're helpful!

  • Hello - I just subscribed and am now picking through your former vlogs and catching up on the progress and all that you have done...WOW ! I'm now interrupting the one where Adrian was outside cutting the bamboo on a Sunday with a helper and ytour Mom was in the closet/cupboard pealing wallpaper off, etc. When I watch Adrian trying to get the ivy off the wall and etc. - you know that the ivy will root into the mortar - also the grapevines - and destroy their support, I'm sure. Anyway...on "The Chateau Diaries" it has shown a "propane torch - two heads - about 4 ft. long that they use there for weeds in the gravel and ALSO FOR REMOVING THE UNWANTED IVY OFF OF THE MOUT WALLS ! Yes, they cut, pulled, etc. BUT that torch really did a quick job for the beginning of an endless task..now the torch is still used for the graveled entrance. May be worth looking back at the vlogs to see what I'm trying to describe..."clearing the mout" one.-(I think I'm spelling "mot" Mout incorrectly....but anyway...good luck

  • That chandelier looks like the right size and proper for a dining room of that grandeur. I really hope the plaster castings will be successful. Not sure if it makes sense but perhaps make extras of the molded pieces or hold onto the casts in the event some pieces need replacing down the road? As for the painting and trying to color match the brown... I'd be tempted to say just sand it all down and primer and put a new coat on all over but there's so many exquisite details that one could get lost in just this one room for weeks on end trying to make it all perfect BEFORE even getting to painting it all brown again. I know with my OCD I'd be in just this one room for months looking to make every corner perfect. I love the wallpaper color and pattern. It seems fitting for a dining room of that size.

It looks lovely, blends in with the ceiling, etc. Sounds like a load of unnecessary work to try and match the wood colour. So, don't leave it white just to save work, leave it white as it looks right :-D

    • @ You could actually pick the colour from the little yellow flowers on the paper, and enhance them that way. And, to go even further, also do pinstripes of the green colour on the crown moulding. Then, to go all out, pick out some details in the ceiling rosette, and paint those in the same yellow, green and gold. Best thing about using green in a room, is that it acts like a neutral background, so you are not limited, when it comes to tablecloths, decorations, etc 🙂

  • Have you considered painting the molding around the ceiling in your wallpaper background green? Regardless, it's going to be a spectacular space!

  • This chandelier for your dining room reminds me of a similar chandelier in the 1830 dining room of our Lieutenant Governor in PEI at his residence of Fanningbank.

  • Ur mounding putty is excellent Carole. U can really restore well. NICE THE MIRROR IS EASY TO CLEAN UP👍

  • Those old mirrors would have been gessoed - with a hide glue and chalk gesso. That's maybe what's coming off. Hide glue well sanded makes a really good smooth base on which to gild. Tricky to apply though, as it has to go on hot. You can probably get a good enough base with a few coats of quality primer, or even acrylic gesso. Good for you for doing the extra step of the "assiette" red colour. It makes a huge difference to the final look. Your dining room is going to be spectacular. That chandelier is stunning!

    • Thanks Claire, but still wondering why the red paint underneath?

      2 жыл бұрын
    • @ well it's traditionally the way it was done on anything that was to be gilded with real gold leaf....(I'm presume you're using some form of brass leaf as the 24carat stuff costs a fortune for a large surface, plus delicate to apply to a vertical surface!) It gives the super-thin gold a warmer tone, and any inevitable tiny fisures which occur blend in better than they would on white. You can also use yellow ochre, btw, and that might actually be better in this application. Have fun with it!

    • If you are interrested, this KZhead series is an excellent overvue of the process, and describes both the traditional water process and the size method which you'll likely be using. She mentions an acrylic bole (that under-layer, available in 3 colours). kzhead.info/sun/g9GfeM-SsGOQrIk/bejne.html

    • Actually Bethanys walls took months, so now I know what to expect. Every ceiling needs 4 coats, every job takes 3x as long as you'd imagine. Everything is just more time consuming, but time we have.

  • If it is possible, since you will be touching up the paint to look like wood paneling, I think it would look best to try to bring back the original area below the ceiling that you painted white. The wow factor in that room in your original videos was the 'wood paneling' going right up to the ceiling. It's just a thought. Look forward to more videos.

  • When you did a close up of the wall panel that needs a trim, I saw the corner of the walls and it has such a huge Crack where they meet. Isn't there any caulking in the wall color that you can use to seal that?
