In this Video we diagnose an engine only running on 5 out of 6 cilinders.
We diagnose it, and learn it has a bad ignition coil driver!
I explain how a Mosfet works and we do some measurements/tests to learn more about Mosfets!
I hope this video helps and remember;
Diagnosedan fixed it again!
Also take a look at the Diagnosedan Facebook page!

  • So cool, Dan! Love the in-depth explanation on the whiteboard of knowledge :) A couple questions:1) Since MOSFET driver is controlled by positive voltage on the gate, how do you know 100% that the ECU chip was damaged by the shorted MOSFET?2) How did you take care of the "immobilizer issue"? Please show us!3) I must admit that is a beautiful clean BMW...how does it look brand new?

    • Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics , I tried to repair the board with a new mosfet. after replacing I checked but there was no control anymore! Most of the time there is more damage than just the mosfet😢. If you are really interested in what i did with the immo, you can sent me a PM on my diagnosedan Facebook page! Thanks for the comment buddy it's appreciated!👍

    • +Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics Hi Ivan! Well Most CPU's work with a maximum 3.3V if you consider that the Mosfet was shorted and the history of the car said that it had a shorted primary coil winding then we can assume that +12V power coming from the coil circuit went trough the signal ECU wire and then through the shorted Mosfet getting at the end to the CPU circuit and burning it. The shorted primary coil circuit and the shorted Mosfet both became a bridge or road for the +12V to get directly to that CPU. Cheers Ivan!

  • I just had a Subaru in my shop that was towed in from the dealer due to dying on the highway and not restarting. Dealer quoted him an engine at NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!! I scope the coil drivers, cams and crank. The cams and crank look good. The coil drivers are all over the place. Just needed an ECM. *Superman theme plays in background*

    @briankotze57@briankotze575 жыл бұрын

The first shop at this point was dumb founded of course. They most likely tested the wire to the coil and it was good too. I guess that's politics today. You can't trust what anybody tells you, even when you pay to have the truth told to you.

Why do we need ground wire on secondary coil. Isn't spark plug grounded through engine block? I hope this question make sense. Thank you again for this outstanding diagnoses and tutorial. Cheers my friend.

    @kyhomegarage3430@kyhomegarage34305 жыл бұрын
    • KY Home Garage KY Home Garage It makes a lot of sense and this is actually a great question! That wire goes to ground thru a resistor. The PCM monitors the voltage drop across the resistor. This way it can monitor if the secondary has fired. So the short answer is that it's used for misfire diagnosis.

      @Diagnosedan@Diagnosedan5 жыл бұрын

  • HI Dan, it's amazing that the PCM even functioned at all after taking high amperage/voltage, thanks for the in depth explanation. Electronics was my favourite shop course in high school and you brought back good memories with that MOSFET, break down.
