    • He wasn't lying. SHE was his dream. The band, the club, whatever, that all came second. She listened but she didn't hear what he was saying. He did it all for her because "this" (her) was his dream. Life and love are about compromise and sacrifice; you can't have it all (at once). We choose our priorities. He chose her. He didn't sacrifice his dream of owning a jazz club because he was settling, he sacrificed it because he decided she, what they had, what he had with her, was more important. He prioritized the relationship, she didn't: "Of course I wanted you to have a steady job so you could take care of YOURself in YOUR life..." (no "we"/"our"). She could have stayed; they could have talked it out. He obviously wanted to FIGHT for her. But she left without even saying goodbye, so think about how he must have felt. He gave up A dream for her because he decided she/they mattered more, and instead of them celebrating or being happy about that choice, she scolded him, they fought, he gets up for a second and comes back and she's just gone. He must have felt like such an idiot.

  • The way he's constantly looking down and couldn't make sincere eye contact made it seem like he's talking more to himself than Mia, convincing himself 'this is my dream now' and that nuance on his part whenever he tries to counter Mia's argument gave us viewers a glimpse about his internal conflict.

Mia comes off as naive. Seb seems to have some grounding in reality.

    • Its true, some adults have a hard time experiencing "love at first sight". Especially for teenagers too, however, don't exactly know how to handle a REAL situation during a REAL relationship. They don't know what they both desire; which makes a complex relationship an even harder decision to leave and move on. I'm not saying there's plenty of fish in the sea, or never let him or her go. All I'm saying is this: its not the end of the world. When a person loves you as a person or sees what makes them fascinate about YOU, you'll get an opportunity to find what real true love is.

    @emilyt6116@emilyt61164 жыл бұрын
    • its all about "in the moment" acting. to truly have that affect you have to convince yourself you are that character in that situation. some people mistake it as trying to force tears out but no one sane ever forces their tears out, they just come out and u try to stop them from doing so. by convincing yourself you are that emotional, it creates that natural affect of trying to hold in your tears and not being able to do so.

  • I just made the connection between Gosling's "it's conflict and it's compromise and it's very very exciting" speech about jazz to their actual relationship. Interesting that the jazz music ends right as the exciting "conflict and compromise of the scene does. Between that, the long stretches of silence, and the slower editing, the moment suddenly feels so fragile and painful. And then the beeping comes in and we switch from a stable camera to handheld. God, this is such a well-crafted scene.

  • See, here's the thing. My dad is a lifelong jazz enthusiast, and he told me the story about Charlie Parker and the 'yardbird' long before this movie was even released so I got the reference but he and I both got what was wrong about calling a jazz-club 'Chicken on a Stick' (not so much that not that many people may get the reference to Charlie Parker, but that it sounds stupid and not even faintly jazz-like, he's making it sound like liking chicken is what's most memorable about Parker, and verges on building on the stereotype that all African-Americans ie the people who created all true forms of jazz, blues, and soul like chicken). He and I both love learning and then teaching other people about jazz but when someone says 'I don't like jazz' to us we'd rather ask 'Well what do you mean by jazz, there's lots of different forms of it?' rather than force them to go to a club. My dad is a music snob - the whole family are music snobs - but he can appreciate other good music styles and knows that there's other good music in the world, and despite his faults (which he has just like everyone else), he doesn't act like music is the only decent job in the world, doesn't take his problems out on everyone else, and is no-where near as much of an arrogant jerk as Seb is.

    • @@chaupham7954 I think it's underrated. If you can make a film and get a bunch of people who thought they didn't like musicals to not only enjoy a musical but also list it as one of their favorite films, its definitely underrated. Its hard to make a film that IMDB rates 8.0 or higher, and this one sits right at an 8.0 which I still think is lower than it should be as again there wasn't a huge demand for live action musicals back in 2016 as coincidently kind of like the movie says about jazz, it had its time but its over now. Picking an unpopular genre and making a historical cinematic masterpiece is no easy feat.

  • The mistake they made that so many movies seem to be encouraging these days is that, before getting married, they're living together and expecting no consequences for that. If you're not ready to be married, why are you sleeping together? If you don't have a stable job then you can't support yourselves or a family, and you're always stressing and running around and growing apart and marriage becomes the last thing on your mind, and you're always trying to see each other when you're both busy. Marriage isn't just about falling in love, it's not about your feelings, it's about commitment and responsibility and growth and becoming better people and sharing your love with new life. I mean, as she said ''Here's to the mess we make.'' They shared something that only a married couple should share, and then they didn't even end up together. You break each other when you do that, how can you share anything or trust each other in that kind of relationship with no commitment?

Here we have Ryan Gosling’s character who is all of these things so he can provide for their future together, and Emma Stone essentially berates him for being a sellout not following his passion. Man, I’d be seriously pissed off too.

    • I think she has fair concerns here. She knows her husband is unhappy at his job, and so she confronts him about it. Men often neglect their feelings and personal problems because they think they should be above them, but this mindset becomes corrosive, making themselves miserable, followed by the people around them. She was really just looking out for him in this scene.
