Coach Brandon @bmorg33 with a quick discussion on bar path during the bench press. A big mistake lifters will make is initiating the backwards motion in the bench press far too early leaving them in a not so optimal position to press maximal load.

  • U guys are proabably stronger and smarter than me. But I do have the USPA state open class bench press record in 2 divisions and I couldn't disagree more. Maybe I'm wrong. But the way i feel is I am the strongest over the shoulders. Isn't that the foce line of production. I'm only touching lower to save my shoulders. But as soon as I come off the chest I want to return to my strongest position. U showed it turning into a skull crusher and said people are forced to flare their elbows. Yes. I flare my elbows and keep them under the bar throughout the entire movement. I don't see why that would be a bad thing. I have a stronger chest than triceps so I'm trying to use as much chest as possible anyways. Idk. Like I said, maybe I'm wrong. But anytime 1 of my clients fails off the chest, it's always because they are pushing up instead of back

    • Edgar Bennett opinions doesn’t mean anything. Anyone who says it’s okay has no idea about the anatomy and biomechanics behind it, and you’ll know because they literally never explain the reasoning behind why “it is ok.” Any experienced and knowledgeable person will explain why it happens and why it’s bad. The hamstring is one of the only muscles that connects to two joints. It connects to the hips and knee, that’s what makes it so unique in function and why it works unlike any other muscle. Most muscles only activate through the stretch reflex and contraction. The hamstring’s main contraction isn’t just a curl but also for hip extension because it is connected to 2 joints. What also connects to the hip is the back. The spinal erectors fight with the hamstring to control the direction of the pelvis. That’s why when you have butt wink, your spinal erector is losing the tug of war against the tight hamstring. That means you lose core stability. Ask any doctor or spine expert about this, not a social media “fitness” influencer who has no merit for his opinion. If you don’t believe me, what happens when you try to touch your toes, your hamstring runs out of room to stretch so your spine goes under flexion and compensates instead, that’s also what makes touching your toes an ineffective hamstring stretch.

  • I have to disagree with this. The exaggerated skull crusher's position is obviously not correct, but to push sightly back, as soon as the bar leaves the chest has proven better, and stronger for me, and everyone I coach. Maybe a topic for more in-depth discussion in the future? 👌🏼

  • A J curve is the optimal bar path for bench pressing the opposite of what your saying here. J curve let's you shorten the shoulder flexion moment which should let you lift more weight

  • This guy has no idea what he's talking about. Flaring the elbows is bad during the eccentric portion but completely FINE during the concentric portion of the lift. Following this guy's bar path is only gonna increase the moment arm which makes you weaker. AND if you look at his bench press videos, he didn't even follow his own advice!!

  • Some people suggest moving backwards in the top third of the lift.....some people suggest moving backwards during the bottom third of the lift....could it just come down to personal preference??? I think there was a study that tracked bar path of some of the top benchers in the world, I'll try to find it.

    • When the bar moves backwards you’re using your anterior delt to do that. And starting from the bottom like that puts immense stress on the rotator cuff. It might allow you to activate your chest greater, but at the cost of your shoulders. The upsidedown j curve is the correct way to do it
