Ammo Types in War Thunder Explained - RELOADED | War Thunder Tank Shells Guide

2024 ж. 5 Мам.

Welcome to the remastered Tank Ammo Guide. In this video, I explain every tank shell in the game, from the most common to the most obscure, to even ones that aren't classified in-game. There are a whole bunch of different shells, and it's easy to get confused about them. That's why I spent a lot of time explaining how they work in detail and provided 3D animations to help you understand how they work. If anything's unclear or you need more information, don't hesitate to leave a comment. Once again, massive thanks to the War Thunder Wiki for providing a lot of info. The video wouldn't have been possible without all the contributors. Check it out here: wiki.warthunder.com/Tank_ammu...
I definitely should've started working on this video earlier, but hey, ammo types part 7. Or is it technically 3.5?

  • So quick thing, APC shells do NOT normalize, this is a myth. The purpose of the cap is to slow the round down on impact to prevent the shell shattering at high speeds.

    @BasedGrandmasKitchen@BasedGrandmasKitchenАй бұрын
    • Youre correct. However, skdoger is also correct. There are different types of those caps with different effects. In terms of gameplay however, it's not wrong to assume that all APC shells normalize, as the shatter protection caps fell out of favor soon after WW1 due to needing low armor angles to have any impact, as well as improved metallurgy negating the effect of those shatter protection caps with tougher armor.

      @fabians7751@fabians7751Ай бұрын
    • @@fabians7751 "In terms of gameplay however, it's not wrong to assume that all APC shells normalize" It is wrong though. Out of all the basic AP types (uncapped sharp nose, capped sharp nose, uncapped blunt nose), capped rounds have generally the worse slope modifiers at higher angles.

      @flipallthetables793@flipallthetables793Ай бұрын
    • @@fabians7751Unfortunately this is not true, the APC shells in the game do not normalise against armour. They actually dig in and travel with the angle of the armour, not against it like you would to normalise. This is typical of a lot of APC shells

  • The VOG on the bmp 2 m has so little explosive filler that it doesn't actually break terrain objects like fences or trees It also doesn't do any damage to tracks at all or very very little. It's practically useless other than using it for blinding the enemy if you shoot them so the gernade detonates and makes a very small dust cloud

  • A cap doesn't improve the angled penetration at high angles compared to an uncapped round. It's the opposite, actually, since when hitting angled armor the nose of the uncapped round has a higher tendency to break off and effectively make the round slightly blunt. This is very clear with rounds like 90 mm T33 having 175 mm of penetration at 0 degrees but 67 mm at 60 degrees, while 90 mm M82 has 185 mm at 0 degrees and 65 mm at 60 degrees.

  • Small corections 1 only the american APFSDS and some other AP rounds are generally made out of DU. Other nations pretty much never used DU. The USA is also moving away from DU penetrators as far as im aware. Problem is that its still radioactive. It does not have huge effects on the crew but the same can't be said when it hits a target where it realeases significant amounts of radiation through the heating. Enough that it is not recomended to go near a vehicle thaf is destroyed with DU. 2 HE shells have 2 penetration values. The value of the shell and the value of the explosion. The value of the shell changes over distance. 3 Im not sure about the implementation in warthunder but HE does have a fuze sensitivity. Which would be 2cm of plywood for the 2cm Minengeshoss.

As a small addition, smoke shells can kill open topped vehicles in-game with the low amount of HE filler contained in them, and I suppose the smoke wouldn't be very healthy for the crew in real life either (on top of the disorienting explosion, even if it didn't do much physical harm).

  • The myth of shell normalization of APC round persists… The cap serves a single purpose: Distributed the impact force on the nose of the shell to keep it from breaking or shattering on impact. This is most likely to occur at 30° impact angle or against face hardened armor. It serves no point after impacting armor at greater angles than 45°, at which the nose shape becomes pretty much meaningless.

  • In-game, APBC outperforms APCBC (assuming equal mass and velocity) for angles around 25-50 degrees, which are some of the most common target angles you will encounter. The exact angle range where this happens increases with the overmatch ratio, Gaijin made public the exact formula they use a few years ago so I wrote a little python code to test it out. It's questionnable whether this is realistic or not, but the result is that large-caliber APBC shells (such as soviet 122mm ww2 shells) have unreasonably good performance versus thin sloped armor. As a result, they are actually a better choice than APCBC for most scenarios

  • 12:55 it is noteworthy that ATGM OTA has 2 types of systems to do this, For example the spike-LR/MR found on KF41 and vilkas will do exactly what the video said, and usually just fire and forget, meant that the target needs to be locked before launching. Meanwhile there's ATGM that will do OTA without the atgm itself has to dive like in the video. Namely the BILL ATGM (sweden: Pbv 302 BILL II and strf9040 BILL) and the TOW2B found on bradleys. These type of ATGMs need SACLOS guidance till it reach the target, and has to be aimed slightly in the target's top (preferably at the turret's top) . This is because the warhead is designed to be launched to the bottom, not to the front (CMIIW).

As the CN-105-F1 was a rifled cannon, the shell has an outer casing separated from the inner shell by ball bearings, allowing the outer casing to rotate and stabilize the shell without spinning the liner and jet.

  • a small comment on APDS. there are 3 generations of it in game. or rater 2.5. the first gen is the usual early APDS. it has bad angle pen but very high flat pen (which is just useless), shatters very often, and has bad damage. these are the 17pdr, 83mm, british 120mm (only on the Conqueror, but NOT on the Chieftain), swedish 37, 57, 75mm, and the US 75, 105mm (but only on the T54E1 and E2, not on the M60). second gen has less flat pen but much more angle pen, postpen damage, and shatters waaay less. they are the 350mm flat pen APDS shells for the 105mm L7 guy (basically every 105mm guns with APDS except the US guns on the T54E1 and E2), and the soviet 100,122mm APDS. however, there is a catch. the L7 APDS acts more like gen 3, and the soviet ones act more like gen 1. not exactly, but between them. regardless, they are both very usable and good. the gen 3 are the best. does not shatter, has a lot of angle pen (outperforming even some APFSDS) good damage, but less flat pen (which is useless anyway). they are found in the lower pen L7 APDS (like on the Vickers Mk 3, and Strv 103), and the Chieftains.

It's easier to think of it like this, the plate is at 60 degree, the cap would technically effectively reduce it but roughly 5 degrees Increasing penetration at angles

  • I'm not sure if anyone else has commented about it, but HE-VT isn't modern at all, the US Navy used it in WW2 in the pacific theater against the Japanese. It was something that really caught me off guard the first time I learned about how old HE-VT really is

  • I, for one, saw the old one, and for two I have way more knowledge about these now. But it seems like there may be some shell types that I may never see

  • Small thing, in the missiles you didn't talk about the missiles that fly straight above the target, then when the time is right a HEAT charge on the side of the missile fires downward to kill the target (Tow-2B, and the other swedish one)

  • dude compared to the last video it was amazing but just a suggestion use mark sharp when shade smoothing and modeling flat surfaces so it looks better congrats on 50k

  • The French found a fairly novel but pricey way to get around spin reducing the effectiveness of heat. They put it on ball bearings. It's the reason why it has about 400mm of pen The M51 gets this round too.

  • would be very cool if you showed clips of the game alongside the animations. I know you worked hard on them, but the game's damage viewing screens can be very informative about the spalling and what the round does

    • In my videos I usually only show things I made myself, because stuff like in-game footage is readily available
