It's crazy to think that it's 2023, I'm 48, and just got into them earlier this year like they were still out there as a group and I'm obsessed....within reason, but damn!! I wish they were still together sometimes!! Or I had at least gotten into them when they came out. But their solo stuff is awesome as hell too!! What launched them, and why they are still so popular..... they're humble. Never acted like they were superior to the fans!! Still encourage fans to sing along with them, talk to them, interact!! NO ONE ELSE COMPARES!! Several acts including Adam Levine and Maroon 5 actually stopped their concert because of the fans singing along.
And Their Era and Prime was just Them. No Music Company dared to create another Boyband with the same formula coz they know 1D was unbeatable.

Its so crazy they completely missed the american black community. I love them but when this was a craze around the world it may have well been a random myth to us.
They were an amazingly white bread band in their look and sound despite Zayn being a person of colour. As solo artists some of them have developed more soul in their music that may prove to have a wider appeal. I was 40+ when they happened. I lived in London but was not interested in those reality talent shows. I found them exploitative and unhealthy for the child contestants. So, I completely missed their explosion and was way too old to care about boy bands. I saw them at the Olympics but I had no idea who Harry Styles was until years later, when he was on a magazine cover in a non-gendered gown. 🤷♀️ Sadly, their biggest hit and much of their music was written by others so they get no royalties. They were worked to death and inappropriately and disturbingly sexualized for 5 years and I hope they can just now enjoy their privacy, invest their money and make the music they want to make, as solo artists.
