Unexpected Bonding Between Baby Elephant Khanyisa & Big Brother Mambo!

Catch up with the trio: Khanyisa, Mambo and Lundi in this video as Adine and Owen spend time beside the elephants while they forage. Young bull, Mambo shows surprising interest in being beside Khanyisa and the calf seems to not mind his company either. The two often spend time together because they share Lundi as a mother but they don’t often graze together alone. Now it’s just them! Is Mambo watching over the calf? It can’t be! Either way, it’s nice to see them together. We spend some time beside Lundi too, sharing insight into this beautiful female elephant in the herd.

Oh, coffee time with "my" ellies. So relaxing. Kumbura has her day off? Looks like Lundi has taken over. 😉 And Mumbo likes some female company. As long as there are not too many of the ladies, and I suppose not for too long. 😁
Lovely to see Mama Lundi with her sometimes wayward son Mambo and Khanyisa, the darling little orphan she became "mother" to and whom she still lovingly cares for together with the allomothers who love and protect Meisiekind and Timi. It was also lovely to see Mambo and Khanyisa so close together, relaxed and comfortable with each other. Although they were already very much an established family when Khanyisa joined them, I've always felt she really has completed and united the Wonderful Jabulani Herd. We were all distressed and very concerned when this badly injured little snare victim arrived at HERD, but everyone just fell in love with her. She immediately connected with Adine and despite the pain and discomfort she must have felt, I think she knew she was safe and loved from the outset. I'd like to think her birth mother somehow knows her little one is growing into a beautiful girl. Than you everyone who loves and cares for each Elephant in this extraordinary family. 💚🐘💚💖🐘🙏
Speaking of her birth mother, wouldn't it be a true miracle if they somehow found their way back to each other? I actually once dreamed that.

'Mambo Pampoen' has got to be one of the cutest nicknames for Mr. Mischief! Lovely to see him and Little Miss K calmly foraging next to each other, though he was determined to show that tree who's boss 😄 Lundi was the first elephant I could identify, thanks to the perforations in her ear, then Mambo because he has similar perforations. Thanks for the close-up of the plant Mambo was eating; Owen calling it a cucumber made me chuckle 😊❤🐘❤
Adine often uses this carino to refer to Khanyisa as well it is very sweet. It’s since been added to the list of many nicknames I use for my little sister too. 🎃🐘🌻

I love the quality of the light in this video....big, bad Mambo has got it in for that tree branch 😄 Their steps are so delicate for such large animals. I love watching their feet. Such a relaxed pace even when they are dismantling trees! What are they thinking? This is just their day. Peaceful feeding, walking and enjoying their surroundings. We would all love to be there with you!
Yes it was nice to see that close up of Mambo's feet today. I do get a 'kick' out of seeing different elephants balance on those amazing appendages ~ especially when Baby K crosses her back legs while eating. 😂🐘💙
I recall another video where Mambo was foraging beside Baby Khanyisa where he stepped up out of the sand pit and away from Khanyisa leaving her all alone. So, when Khanyisa realized she was alone trumpeted and the Allomothers came running within seconds to protect her. Fascinating to learn that is the elephant is left handed they will secret from the opposite side of their head. AMAZING. Glad to see Mambo taking his guarding and protection more seriously now or he realized he needed to do some dead tree pruning. I've noticed Mambo acting the big brother recently. "Pumpkin" is hilarious! Its like naming a teen great white shark Sugar Pie. Lol! Endearment for a boy we know really is sweet inside.

There is so much to carry on those strong feet, and I am in awe of how well they are constructed. Again, nature is a beautiful thing. Mambo, though, you are quite the mischievous one. Looks like Mambo was trying to bring the tree down so that the top branches were closer to Khanyisa's level; it's almost like he was trying to show her the best eatable part of the tree. Mambo Mambo, what a delightful teen today...

Mambo and Khanyisa bonding means one of two things, either Mambo is being good and taking his big brother duties seriously. Or they are plotting mischief together and there's going to be some escapades soon 😁. I know what my money's on 😆

Their feet fascinate me! They seem incredibly delicate for carrying that much weight. And they can walk so quietly; if you hear branches breaking, its most likely because they're feeding not walking on them. I love all of these characters !❤🐘❤🐘❤

The way he was watching Khanyisa when he was knocking the tree over was almost as if he were showing her, 'Look what your big brother can do!' He could reach the top of the tree fine, I think he knocked it over not just for fun but so his little sister can have some of the topmost green leaves.💖🐘
I think Mambo was trying to bring the tree and leaves down for Khanyisa! She isn't as strong and tall. He really was helping her. Good job done by Mambo.

Until today, I had no idea that the excretions favored a 'side' in elephants! 🍃🐘🐘💙 But I noticed the coincidence of Mambo's right ear being a bit torn looking like his Mum's, although not as dramatic in appearance.

It must be wonderful to be up close and personal with the elephants. If I was there, I would be jumping out of my skin so excited being there that the elephants would take off in all directions - good thing I'm on my phone! You HERD are definitely doing God's work protecting and caring for these animals - (can you call them animals? They are so human.)

Mamba has the most beautiful toes and feet. He also has the pretties tail. I think that is wild cucumber they seem to like.

This video was sooo cute! My take is that Mr. Mischievous Mambo wanted Khanyisa to see his strength as he was having a get-go with the tree. But it sure looked like maybe he was trying to break off that branch so Khanyisa could reach it, too. It was nice seeing Mambo, Lundi and Meisiekind together so peacefully. Besides her milk bottles, she is a prolific forager--and often seems unfazed by what is happening around her because she also loves to munch!

Today we could discover another side of Mambo foraging peacefully with his sister little Miss Sunshine (not like the previous time when he was supposed to be in big brother's duty and left our pink Baby alone trumpeting in despair) He is a beautiful young bull and likes to show off his strength to impress his peers leaving this poor tree no chance 😅😂 Mama Lundi always very cool but she doesn't miss a thing of her son's program she knows him too well ! With Mambo Pampoen you can expect everything the best but sometimes also the worries but it is never boring😂🤣

It was extremely sad to read today (7-1-23), that a baby elephant at the Louisville, Kentucky (USA) zoo died late Friday from the EEHV virus. His name was Fitz and he would have turned 4 in August. He was loved by all...bless his soul.😢
I’m still amazed at some of those thorns, kinda ouch to tongue but incredible that you telling us re saliva softening it. Well that was so enjoyable to see Mambo getting into that tree, at one stage I said out loud tiimmmbbberr 😂 as it looked like a fair bit of that tree was going down. I guess he just enjoyed knocking it around! 😂❤. Now was he as he moved towards Khanyisa saying this is my tree maybe not as she was getting into the grass. When you showed Mambos feet I wondered if those thorns would penetrate their feet or are they too hard, the pads I’m meaning?

Debra, I think you're right! Dare we think Mambo might be growing up and taking on a few responsibilities!?!? Perhaps the difference in elephants who have been orphaned, with trauma, and those who luckily have been spared that horror. At any rate, they were some sweet moments!♥️🐘💛🇺🇲

I can't get my head round that Mambo is Khanisya''s big stepbrother. I accept we can only ever see 10-30 minutes of video per day, but nothing Mambo has ever done previously suggests he has one trace of familial affection for Khanisya. Let's face it: Khanisya cannot even be corralled with Lundi bcs of Mambo''s presence.
I think I could use the tree trimming services of Mambo on the trees on my property. He did well on that tree.
