The reason Man Utd didn't have any sustained periods of possession, as Carragher put it, is because they're not a particularly good side. They haven't done this all season. They haven't really played well all season. They can't expect to go to Anfield, and dominate a better side, just because they're wearing a kit that says Man United on it, and another completely different bunch of Man Utd players won stuff in the past.

Yeah. Neville said he doesn't agree that it was a missed opportunity. Then he goes on to say that he understands why United's mindset was where it was. Both are obviously true - it's completely understandable the way that United settled for the draw, but it's still a missed opportunity as well.

@@PriyanshAjania I think that’s how I view it as well, dont know why everyone is suddenly accepting Man Utd draw as an okay result. (With the fans being so loud abt ending the Anfield record etc etc) Carragher was saying is that Liverpool is at its lowest point hence Man Utd should exploit it quite easily.
Carra made Gary’s point even stronger. He said with all the midfield quality Man U had on the pitch versus a weakened Liverpool, they never had a period of authority where they sustained attacks and had possession in Liverpool’s half. Well then if ur best players aren’t able to grab the game by the bollocks, then the team as a whole isn’t ready for a more attacking mindset going to Anfield. I’m shocked at the criticism of Utd, that’s a solid point when u take into acct Liverpool’s record at Anfield under Klopp. Prem punditry beats anything in sports, ur damned if u do and damned if u don’t as a manager, and that’s magnified immensely when ur a mgr of a top 4-6 club, it’s madness. Only way Ole comes outta that game smelling like roses is if Utd won 3-0 and had 82% possession. Prospective is just not a part of the equation for pundits or if it is, only when convenient. And this isn’t a complaint, as a Gooner I bloody love the banter.

Both Pundits are right from their perspective, but Carra you have to understand every fixture b/w United & Liverpool is like this. Even the best Liverpool last season played safe got a draw in one and then snatched a win in another. Form goes out. This is the type of match when a loss to your fierce rivals would demoralize the team for the rest of the season. Thats the way it is always been. Unless one of the team has a total unrest within the squad like Jose's United at OT you can go for a win.
If you actually look at the bruno chance it was good build up play. We went to Anfield last season with Andreas Pereira and Brandon Williams. We have improved.
💯 and we will be better again next season. The gaping hole at RW is still a big issue (fingers crossed for Diallo) and as effective as McFred are, they are not the long term solution to these games and will definitely be improved on (using funds from Pogbas sale)
Bit disrespectful to Williams... He's a good player and loves the club

@@Mw2_OG Williams is a decent prospect no doubt but he's not close to Shaw or Telles' level yet. In fact, he may never be - go back to 2013/14 season and an 18 year old Shaw was voted in the PL team of the season so talent wise he's above as well. The point was about how United are a much stronger side this season than they were last (particularly in terms of squad depth to handle injuries). This game last season, it was United that had the injury crisis and Liverpool had their entire first team fit and United were battered for most of the game. This time, it was a fairly even game and United had the better chances.

I think United should've won the game, yes, the had better chances. But they came out with as many points as Liverpool and still on top of the league--and any United fan would've taken before the ball was kicked.
What does Carragher know about “champion teams” and winning titles? Gary is right, United aren’t quite there yet.
🤣🤣🤣
There not there yet because they don't have the, killer instinct - Carragher was right, best opportunity to beat Liverpool at Anfield those Man Utd players will probably ever have and they bottled it. You don't have to be a "champions team" to see when a game is there for the taking - they failed to step up, simple as that.
He won the champions league title lol
@@M-E_123 disagree. Most of these players excluding Fernandes were a bunch of fraudsters for years and now they’re starting to look a bit more solid. A defeat would’ve derailed all of that. A draw was ok.
@@M-E_123 I think that's the point tho. It took klopp 4 seasons? I think to make a champions team. United are very close but are just missing that cutting edge. In the grand scheme of things that is a very good result. Man city drew 1-1 just as a comparison

I'm confused a little bit, these two, who was the Liverpool player and who was Man United?
as a united fan l kinda agree it’s carragher, the opportunity was there to be taken, we weren’t that good in the first half but second half we were a little better and had opportunities that could easily have killed the game. l still feel like us not winning this game might come back to haunt us. But we have never been in a situation like this like Gary said the club and players have been going through so much drama and ole has done well for the time being. l never really expected to challenge for the title so this changes everything you start expecting more from the players and manger. we will have to wait and see l guess just take it a game at a time
ideally of course but ideally we'd win every game 5-0. realistically its not a bad point which is the whole argument. this is arguably the first time in 3 years when we've gone into the game with better form and we definitely still weren't favourites. we're going to drop points to teams we shouldnt, we already have to arsenal and those are the games we'll look back on more than this one imo

Nah, I'm actually going to agree with Carragher here even though it makes me 🤮 to do so. Ole is getting more and more defensive and more and more risk-averse in these big games. For a former striker, he's peculiarly risk-averse. He's almost been Mourinho-like in our last few bigger games. Last night we didn't even pretend like we were going to take the game to them. It was sit in and counterattack from the first whistle. We were doing nothing but hitting long balls to try launch counterattacks, and not even doing that well. No short-range, move-building passing, not even 90 seconds worth of concerted possession anywhere in the game. Just get the ball and try launch a counterattack like 90s Bolton. Kind of pathetic really. We hear GNevs say "oh they're not ready to attack Liverpool" and whatnot. When will they be ready? When does that day come? Do you receive some sort of sign in the clouds that today's the day you're ready to attack bigger teams? If he's not willing to do it now when we're top of the table and they're fielding midfielders as defenders, then the day is never likely to come. He's getting more and more defensive. You'd think he was Steve Bruce, a former defender managing a team, not one of our best former strikers. Strikers can often be quite cavalier and almost irresponsible when they become managers. Not this guy. Mourinho would have been proud of that performance last night.
@@spinblade6459 Clean sheets help you win games though, and at the very least earn a point. So I always have sympathy for defensive focus and counter attacking. Even in the Ferguson era United would defend and counter-attack at pace
@@spinblade6459 chelsea arsenal Leicester tried to take the game to Liverpool and got slaughtered. Even city sat deeper against this Liverpool team and got a draw. Villa put 7 past them hitting them on the counter. This Liverpool team want you to come out and play against them and give them space in behind. Why play into their hands when you can frustrate them. A few iffy performances can be expected with playing every 3 games.
After attending my first match 60 years ago next year,.it's really frustrating when Gary was reminded by both the other Guys that THERE WERE NO FANS and yet neither pressed him so he never gave his opinion about that.I always thought I had the Football pulse of The Nation but for the first time, it is ME who is out of kilter with the mentality of many in the game. My team: Millwall broke the league record (then ) when going 59 games unbeaten at The OLD Den while losing 22 Away games in that same period (1964-66) so I learned over 50 years ago that HOME ADVANTAGE IS 90% CREATED BY THE FANS. THERE ARE NO FANS, It's purely a mindset for some Away teams THIS SEASON :(
He's there talking about the 'team that liverpool put out. They had effectively 5 midfielders, 2 of whom were at the back. They were always going to dominate possession, having midfielders at the back doesn't stop you from doing that, especially when you are a side like liverpool. The weakness in that Liverpool side with that line up is coping with the movement of strikers as a midfielder will struggle with that.
Neville nailed it as always and outsmarts Carraghers lack of perspective. Southampton fan, no bias.

1000% agree with Gary , most pundits make the mistake comparing this United side to the dominant ones of the 90s and 2000s , this has not been the same level of squad for a while now. Ole is rebuilding the culture , the squad and the mentality which takes time , just like Liverpool who were the best English club around in the 70s and 80s and then were a shadow of themselves for about 3 decades after. Even under Klopp it took time and a lot of signings and money to get the squad winning. And Gary is correct even under SAF when we were miles ahead of Liverpool the matches between us were still tight usually cagey affairs , same with the 90s and early 2000s matches against Arsenal who were often better footballing sides but SAF set us up to nullify them and get the points. So many people / pundits say "this is Manchester United" , "biggest club in the world" just to pile on the pressure and generate more negative press and headlines, well United are in a rebuild and at executive level has not been run the way it should have been for quite a while now. Milan needed a decade or so to get back to it , Real and Barca seem to be going through a bit of that rebuilding process now. The sport goes in cycles and at the moment we / United are still getting to where we need to be to be able to have confidence to open up in those type of matches and have the quality , confidence and belief to execute that. Not that long ago this season we were written off and rubbish , Ole was about to be shown the door but we have come around a bit for the time being. The strategy from Ole was the correct one and nearly paid off with a bit more composure in front of goal. We are not there yet to go toe to toe with the likes of Liverpool and City. Still top the table for now , focus on the next few fixtures to try and maintain our position.

A counter attacking team that don't even know how to counter attack properly? They were crap yesterday and will drop many more points this season. This is a fake title race. Will still be Liverpool v City in the end.

@@raxj8257 alright, if we scored that pogba chance and won the game then would you still say that we didnt turn up??
Both of these guys are right. I say this because here in Italy, my team Milan are going thru a similar situation to that of Manchester United albeit a more sustained and longer run of wonderful form. This time last year, we were in a terrible situation. When football stopped because of the pandemic, I was actually happy and relieved. The first match played behind closed doors before football was suspended involved a home defeat to Genoa. A game in which were were bereft of hope, inspiration, quality, enthusiasm or any indication of things getting better. But once football restarted, we went on an incredible run which has basically continued as I type, culminating in another victory away from home placing us 3 points clear at the top. Neville is right - When we played Inter at the beginning of the season, I'd have been happy with a point. It would've kept our run going and even more so given our recent awful record in the derby. But surprisingly, we came out fighting from the first minute and before anyone could even catch a breath, we were winning 2-0. Then there were victories away to Napoli - post years and years of being spanked in Naples, I would've again been happy with a point there to keep the run going. Yet somehow, we went there and again outplayed and outclassed them to deservedly win. Ultimately and given where Man Utd are in the league, a point away to their biggest rivals is definitely a good point. You can't expect a team that finished bottom of its champions league group to suddenly change overnight. Team cohesion and growth doesn't just happen automatically. Man Utd went there with a plan and they executed it perfectly. Furthermore, they actually had the best chances to win. Carragher is also right when he says that Man Utd should've sensed that Liverpool were not on it, and had big players missing. But the Man Utd coach would've been criticised heavily had he changed the game plan and ended up conceding a poor goal late in the game. Why sacrifice a point for what would've essentially been a short term gain? Man Utd are still top, have gone to the champions and got a deserved point and could head back home feeling encouraged that they're progressing. If I'm not wrong, De Get is the only remnant of Man Utd's last success in the league. A name doesn't mean anything if you don't have a good team and a good manager. I know that because here in Milan, for 6-7 seasons we are been nowhere near Inter, Juventus, Lazio, Roma and Napoli. Usually when we've played these teams, I had gotten used to us always having a collapse. Even Atalanta who are the third biggest team in our region beat us 5-0 around this time last year. If you don't have the players, the badge and name means very little. It's humility, dedication, team ethic and hunger that wins matches. Both of these guys made valid points. They're not wrong, but it is also totally plausible to look at both narratives as not accurate as well.
"Missed opportunity" Loses to Burnley 😂😂😂
that just proves that it really was a missed opportunity for man u ???

Liverpool fan here, the game was a snooze fest. But I have to agree with Neville, managing the game n getting a draw actually hurts Liverpool more than attacking them in MU's perspective. MU is still 3 points ahead.
Basically united invested slightly better under a new manager that has finally been able to weather the storm and then push on side on that united always have the talent for top 4 any season it was just a case of getting a manger that be even less connected to the club than some of the player bought over the last 5 years
Liverpool looked more open defensively in the game, even if they had more shots. Man Utd had the two biggest chances
Anfield was always gonna be difficult even without fans and their injuries.

Liverpool actually didn’t really have clean cut chances. Their front 3 were no good and United defended well. I think United were the better team despite not having as much posesssion. Possession isn’t everything.
Jamie acting like he knows anything about winning a league...
He came close and won the Champions League so it's not like he's completely ignorant of what it takes to win it.

@@lucioledizerot196 but he didn't win the league
@@lucioledizerot196 Leagues take persistent consistency, a Champions League is very hard against tougher competition. But both take slightly different approaches
@@lucioledizerot196 he didn't really come close to the league though and the point is, however close they came, they didn't actually have the winning mentality to win those kind of games that he's criticizing United for. Jamie's developed such an ego about Liverpool, but he's living off the success of the Liverpool team of the 70's, 80's and the last few years. Not for what they did during his career. It's almost embarrassing that he talks the way he does to ex United players who won everything. Also, Liverpool won the champions league in 05 because of being dragged by Gerrard. Jamie didn't really contribute all that much to the UCL, especially the final. There's a reason Liverpool had to come from 0-3 down. I'll give you clue, the defense. Jamie doesn't have a clue about winning mentality, as a player he had very little talent and messed up loads of times in big games. He just constantly threw himself around desperately trying to make up for his mistakes and lack of ability to read a game. The fact is everything he said there was an attempt to deflect the conversation from Liverpool not coming close to beating United at home and try to put the focus/blame on united. But United aren't defending champions, Liverpool are. United weren't at home, Liverpool were. Where's his criticism for Liverpool no showing up and not trying to win a game at home? United got a fair and credible result against the defending champions at home, where they've been unbeaten for 4 years. If anything United were unlucky not to snatch the win. They got the chances to. So it was a good preformance for this up and coming United team, away from home. They exceeded expectations. It was a bad preformance for the current champions, at home. Who didn't meet expectations. Jamie is being disingenuous in his perspective and talking from a place he doesn't understand to a player who does understand.
Love how Carragher said he disagreed with everything Neville said and proceeded to disprove none of it.
Actually Neville makes sense, when LFC were toppling city, the games used to be city with the huge possession but once they won the Champions League there was a shift, suddenly the team became exceptional in possession, they even matched City's last season possession stats in their head to head battles. In 2 seasons time if Ole is still with the job, the game will be how Jamie wants it to be. I think.
All this talk on Liverpool’s defensive.. why isn’t Liverpool not scoring the biggest topic?!? It’s by far The biggest problem they have! In the 13 games since van dijk got injured they haven’t Conceded more than 1 goal in any of them 13 games. Keeping 5 cleen sheets. 2 goals would have been enough to win everyone of there last 13 games. 2!!
i think utd not scoring against midfielders at CB would be bigger news than that
Capone they are not alone though are they? Since the Villa shock a lot of teams have failed to score against Liverpool. Fabinho is a brilliant CB, and because their midfield is so strong the opposition rarely get the ball to create chances with. Liverpool are still insanely good, they are just missing that spark at the front that’s all. Considering Utd had to use McFred (use VDB and Pogba in the middle and they get absolutely destroyed) I thought they did very well.
Agreed
Because they're too focused on Henderson and Fabinho at the back. The truth is the way we're comfortable.
@@Spiinellii you mean not scoring past arguably the best GK in the world along side the best 2 full backs and a make shift centre half who could walk into probably any teams 11 at centre half in fabinho? Nah the bigger problem is the goal scoring mate. The same front 3 added a world class midfielder and have the same two assisting full backs. And still can’t score. That’s the problem.
In a way, they're both arguing the same point.
Carraghers talking about the clubs stature, not the teams current position, theres still a ways to go before united can turn up and just play their game without taking the oppositions strengths into account, or being cautious of them. We may be top but we havent strung a 90 mins of fluid football together all season. Theres a few players missing before that is something we can start to think about at places like Anfield and even then you have to adjust your game Nevilles right about us never going and hammering Liverpool at anfield, we'd capitolise on weaknesses on the counter usually, and LVG was probably the most dominant we have ever been there.
Main point of the argument is there are no fans at any stadium. It’s a season like no other. You can’t compare this season to previous seasons.
Who else wants to see their heated argument about pineapple on pizza or whether orange juice should have bits?
@gunner Richthofen finally we have a true human
Okay, pineapple on pizza is for sure an abomination, but putting "orange juice with bits" in the same conversation is just disgraceful. I guaranteed if orange juice with bits was just called orange smoothie instead people would have a completely different opinion of it and twice as many people would drink it and nobody would bat an eyelid.
Pineapple should never be considered as a pizza topping. 🤢
Pineapple on pizza and orange juice with bits are absolutely the correct way to consume these foodstuffs 👍

Total Sense from Neville. Carra and whathisface are just winding him up here.
Anfield isn't Anfield with no fans. It's basically a neutral venue.
I am not a United fan but was admiring them when Best, Law and Charlton were just starting in the early 1960s nearly 60 years ago. My first attended game was in 1962 but is it ME or nearly everyone else going mad? THERE IS NO HOME ADVANTAGE THIS SEASON. NO CROWD MEANS NO HOME ADVANTAGE. This was a really good chance for Man United to lay down a marker... especially given Liverpool's shortcomings at centre-half and the lack of fluency among their famed front three. United keep on not showing up for big games. Need to be more proactive. Should have gone all out this game. Really lacking a proper starting CF. Starting Cavani at CF regular will help a lot.
Carra is spot on, Utd players looked scared and nervous on the ball. They couldn't string more than 3 passes together . Apart from the 2 chances missed, Utd looked very mediocre and ole should have taken advantage of the fact that pool didn't have their regular players on the pitch . Their back 4 weren't tested when they should have.. (utd supporter)
It was the tactics mate. Maybe if we had a couple different players on the pitch we could have actually seen the attack actually play.
