Unicorn Overlord has an abundance of Units and Class Types to Recruit and Experiment with. In the early stages of the game (Chapter 1 aka Cornia Specifically), these 5 units in particular stood out amongst the rest as immensely powerful and versatile. If you find yourself struggling, or want to increase the power of your formations, try recruiting any of these units!

They did it. The mad lads found a way to make Jagen units not be exp traps that fall off
There's only like 1 mainline Jagen that actually is an exp trap (Quan) and only a few that fall off hard

@@AntonioCunningham Named after Jagen from the first Fire Emblem on the NES, he was a Paladin who started stronger than all your other units but had low growth rates so he wouldn't get any better with levels. Most fire emblem games have a unit like this who's meant to make the early game easier, but they get a reputation as exp traps because they're surrounded by weak units with high growth rates, who want exp, meanwhile the Jagen will usually one round enemies and "steal" the exp. In reality they just make playing the early game much easier, and micro managing that much exp is almost never worth it compared to using stronger units when they're most necessary

@@AntonioCunningham New games have the option to turn off permanent death I'd recommend one of them (Awakening or later)
Almost cleared Cornella region and I am stunned at the love that went into crafting this masterpiece. I havent seen this much passion in a project since the console wars!
I'm a Lex apologist. He's not good at the start of the game, in fact he's quite bad but he EXCELS when guarding other units and give him a weapon that replaces his basic attack with something better and Fighters end up as basically better hoplites. Almost as unkillable and way more versatile with better damage. I gave Lex the viperfang and put him with a Gryphon Knight, Chloe, and a Cleric and the sheer amount of damage, tanking, and healing that team has in just overkill. They basically can't die, the Gryphon Knight tears apart the back row, Lex poisons high armor units to death and Chloe either does good AoE damage or snipes flyers with javelin. And the team just wouldn't work with anything but a Fighter, he's severely underrated.
I love the theif’s ability to just dodge everything. So fun
My favorite combination would be gryphon knight and thief at the front with both high evasion, at the back are the witch, shaman, and a soldier. The theif has a passive skill that casts up initiative on the witch. Witch casts icebolt on high initiative, shaman casts initiative down on high initiative units next. The frontliners take care of defeating the enemy with the solider serving as utility for healing or damage.
Man, Sellswords just destroy Housecarls. Just put a beefy unit at the front and have fun watching her annihilate them while they do little to no damage.

Good list, however, you forgot one huge selling point on Gryphon Knights: their valor skill Hastened Call. This is probably one of the most useful and borderline broken valor abilities in the game, especially when it promotes to Hastened Call 2. It doubles an ally unit's mobility, making them move twice as fast. It costs 1 valor, and at promotion, it becomes an area of effect that can boost multiple of your units at once. I've used this one a platoon of units, and I tell you they were zooming across the battlefield, especially cavalry and other flying units. Hastened Call makes traversal a non-issue, and you can clear maps so easily. Just be careful when you unpause because they might be moving way too fast to keep up sometimes.

A little later in the game, but it is worth it to complete the thirty ranked fights at Drakenhold Colliseum asap. There are guides out there for completing even at low levels.
First thing I do is give Josef's Sword and Shield to Alain, get Unwavering Spear and Dancer's Bracelt for Clive, and Golden Egg for Chloe. Then they just destroy everything in the game as an unstoppable squad. Josef actually has lower attack than Alain but he has pursuit so doesn't need a good weapon since he can attack more often. Also I mess around with a bunch of the tactics to make these plans work could explain in more detail if people want.

@tipikkipik4664 well I have progressed a bit and my squad is a bit more complex now but basically for Clive you do 1 True Thrust scout only, 2 True Thrust flying only, 3 Wild Rush full column only, 4 Assaulting Lance lowest HP if you have 2 AP this works otherwise put Assaulting Lance infantry only and lowest HP before Wild Rush then do the Wild Rush and Assaulting Lance lowest HP afterwords that way with your single AP you will use Assaulting Lance on infantry still since you are likely to kill them. For his PP just put Powerful Call to target front row where Alain is. You want Alain in front and Clive and Chloe in back. For Alain his tactics are super simple just target lowest HP for Lean Edge and leave everything else the same. Clive will buff him so he can kill easily and regen tons of HP. Chloe also leave everything the same. At the point I am at I have dropped Chloe from the squad and added Adel and Miriam. For that squad just copy everything from Clive to Adel but give the Dancer's Bracelet to Miriam since the Knights have Cavalier's Call instead later. Put all three of them in back row. I gave Miriam the Runic Sword and set her to 1 Row Heal target HP

Bruh this game reminds me too much of FE🤣 Josef - the OP Horse Retainer Archetype. Alain - Blue Haired Sword using Lord. Scarlett - the Light/Holy based (obvious) love interest. All it’s missing is a Dragon Final Boss or Super Boss.
Clerics are pretty good and if you need to quickly clear those one off battles on the field, adding a Cleric to your main team will make them near invincible. Radiant Knight and Hoplite are a great combo as RK cover Hoplite's magic weakness meaning it'll only be weak to Warriors
I got all the named characters in the game. There are 64 named characters you can get by the time you do the final battle and 6 more named characters you get in a special side mission AFTER the final battle.
I have been just trying to pair characters that story go together: Lex & CLoe, Travis his sister and Bruno, Clive and Bernice Main character & Scarlett etc =)
I still waiting on my copy to arrive lol. Thats the price I pay for going physical I guess.

@@Varsona Also on the topic of witch the map you get Yhona in is quite nasty the way they setup the one side with the arrow spam and I didnt want to waste xp on my overleveled shield units so I had one hell of a bad time getting through the arrow spam from the towers they made me earn Yhona lol.
big city usually ship them out on march 5th, i got my on 5th 's night. due to rural area usually take 2 days to arrive.

I just walked into a local GameStop and bought it in person. Didn’t even preorder. Glad I didn’t have to wait.
Auch and a second wizard (i think thats the class name) with auch's staff (the one that makes him fire a fireball at the end of the round) and give the other wizard sorcerors connection so he buffs auch's attacks.. very fun combo.. i put ochlys in the front rom and a griffin in the back row with them.. they delete alot but i made auch the leader and use him to magic support alot so i usually get him to take a tower near the enemy and then use him to free support everyone.. or put him in one of those barricade items
I didnt use the generic gryphon knights very much cus u recruit so low but when i got fran she has easily been my mvp for battles easily killing all horses and normally destroying wyvern formations in the 2nd region and having the valor ability to speed up unit movement in battle best unit in the game imo
Glad to see the Witches are also in this game and they've been improved compared to the Ogre Battle Witches.
My fav so far is between the wyvern rider and soldier or elven fencer and elven hunter combo
I’m personally a fan of Hoplite in front row and triple Sell swords in the back row.
I rock a 3 man party of Feathersword, Wyvernrider and Blademaster with Feathersword on the front. The slay everything

You don't have a need for healing units imo as you can heal with valor so just go all-in on attacks and maybe a tank
this game gives me big Bahamut Lagoon vibes, Its unfortunate its only out on consoles, hope it comes to Steam someday

Calling your early prerpomote an experience trap designed to steal exp is a pitfall. You should always use them while they are good as the early game is generally the hardest part of the game. In Fire Emblem using them to kill dangerous or annoying enemies or weakening enemies so your other units can finish them off is great. Even using them to kill bosses for you is a good idea or to capture side objectives like villages.
Jagens are powerful tools that can be used responsibly (like to weaken enemies for your lower level unit or to traverse/rush places as you said) but someone new to these types of games usually won't understand the nuances of leveraging a prepromote while building up their own mid/late game strategies. Over-reliance on prepromoted unit is a pretty common pitfall sadly 😥
@@Varsona unless you are soloing chapters with them you will be fine. Heck in Path of Radiance you should solo some of the early chapters with Titania. Seth is the best unit in Sacred Stones early, mid, and late game. Marcus in Blazing Sword has the best weapon ranks out of all your units with AAB and that is very difficult to replicate on another unit even if you use them all game. His stats are also good for the entire game he just won't be your very best unit all game he will go from like 1st to maybe 5th best unit. Overreliance on them is not a common pitfall it is actually the opposite, most new players avoid using them because they see them get 1 xp from kills. I know I avoided using Jagens for years. This is a misconception and just handicapping yourself. Maximizing exp is not needed and you should use all your resources to beat the chapters. The goal is not to get 20/20 units, the goal is to beat the game.
well unlike fire emblem he is not a jaegen more on the line of a oifey or Seth he is just a promoted Radiant Knight
@magegeneral6988 anyone who mentions Oifey as not being a Jagen I am convinced has not played FE4 or used Oifey. Oifey actually falls off within his first chapter and is not really needed ever. He is no better that any other Jagen. Like he is not bad and you can use him for the entire game but generally you have tons of overpowered child units who inherited amazing overpowered weapons and can easily annihilate all the enemies with like brave weapons and such while Oifey has like an Armorslayer and Javelin. I have played every Fire Emblem game outside of the NES and Shadow Dragon or FE12, and every single Jagen not named Jagen since I have not used him is a great unit. All of them I used the entire game and they were still great. I also was easily able to level up other units and they were also great later on. So like unless you have an example of a bad Jagen in an FE game I don't know what to say. I guess Gunter is not that good in Revelations? I usually consider the butler/maid to be more of the Jagen in those games though. In most FE games the easiest way to play is to use your Jagen very heavily early on and by the time the enemies catch up to them in stats the game will give you a ton of prepromotes to join your team and you can use those to beat the rest of the game. Training units is fun though so I suggest picking 2 or 3 training projects early on. Training is essentially gambling, though, and they could turn out terrible since in FE level ups are random. Pretty much every single FE game has been beaten in 0% growth too which is where nobody gains stats on leveling up.
@quickpawmaud4284 I've witnessed a couple dozen friends get stuck in fire emblem games throughout the years due to lack of familiarity with resource management. These friends are not turn based or strategy gamers; so they are not used to approaching the systems with the same viewpoint as you or me. The same may be true if Unicorn Overlord is someone's first forray into SRPGS. Strategy games are amazing because they can be approached in so many different ways. I dont think you should play or beat any game a specific way and only that way, that can be reductive to the experience. If someone loves using Seth or Titania, more power to them. As long as they understand (as you mentioned) the logistics of doing so and are intentional with their decision, then 100% I'm all for it. Perhaps the jagen explanation could have been worded better; but the core message is still in there: Josef good and strong; but will not always be strong in future.

easy to overcome with high initiative units or average one such as the Griffon and just give someone angel plume which gives +15 initiative and doubles on a flying unit and use the freeze tome to give them row freeze. auto deletion of debuffers
@@magegeneral6988 the base initiative of Shamans is only beaten by Scout types, so if the person utilizing Shamans know what they're doing, they're going to ensure that they'll always move first no matter what, and that's easy to do against any DPS when you already have a strong lead at base. Not to mention Shamans don't need anything other than more initiative.They can sacrifice all other stats, while dps can't afford to do that.

josef isnt exp trap, hes one of the best early game tanking unit and leader unit i have 4 main team team1 alain with cav hunter's buckler in position 1, 1knight leader behind him for movement speed, and bring anyone along (housecarl is best unit for them since hes faster than knight and) team2 josef in position1 with anyone behind, early game its best to give him runic sword and 1mage 1 hammer, they are armor killer team team3 lead with thief in position 1 and paired with hoplite to obsorb arrow they have speed and could plunder enemies for extra money ( if u have trustrike spear and archers, they are truestrike team and could station a tower if u swap leader to archer) team4 lead with flying unit in position1 paired with lex chloe to obsorb arrow and kill horseriders/towers. and who care about exp when u could use that +100% exp valor skill, use this skill on boss team every battle, u will out level opponent the front row only need 1 unit until u get to 5man team

I'm n1 on the charts. Finally a good video. Good job. Try a sellsword with a magic weapon and prioritize first line while hitting back line with a griffon. Also, Alain is probably the best or amongst the best unit. Also, init buff is a must in this game. Faster you hit, less dmg you get. Or focus on massive tanking with half tank phys half tank magic with prepare magic with a mage. This game offers so much when you manage weapons, buffs, combinaison

Correct! They are a valuable tool that can easily become exp thieves to the new and uninitiated (in regards to Strategy games)
