I've Never Played the Original Metroid Missions

Well, after the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule, the only logical place to go next was space. What could possibly go wrong when Samus is there? I'm sure the Metroids will be happy to see us.
Thank you so much for watching! This was an ordeal to finish but I hope you all enjoy it! More videos sooner than this one, promise!

  • A lot of people who have covered the Metroid series have the same Wikipedia style information dump that gets boring fast. I’m happy to say your take is very personal and adds a different perspective than most. I enjoyed this video so much, I went back and watched your other content. The effort you put into your videos shows and I’m sure other people will also start to notice. Best of luck on KZhead. Subscribed.

  • As you're discovering, the SNES was a blessed era in gaming. It had just enough power to finally unlock the full potential of genre defining games. Re the Metroid 2 boss, you can freeze her at the end of one of her lunges right before she hits you. This puts her at ground level, and you can spam 30+ missiles into her by stunlocking her. That's how I beat her back in the day.

    @michaelkreitzer1369@michaelkreitzer13694 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, never having an SNES really makes it clear how much I missed out on, and how much I still have to experience. As for the Queen boss, I realized I could do that, but by the time I could get her to that point in most fights I was so low on health that no matter how much I spammed I basically died the moment she unfroze 😔

  • Everyone always says "I don't WANT to draw my own map", but has anyone actually tried it? I hadn't for a while, but then I decided to just for fun when playing the second quest in Zelda and... it really wasn't a big deal at all. It barely slowed down the pace, and the benefits far outweighed the... well, nonexistent negatives. I then tried it again with Metroid, and sure, I've played through the game before so I know where all the secrets are, but I still found myself appreciating the world in a whole new way after drawing out the layout of Zebes myself. It made it incredibly obvious where the infamous Norfair tile is since, as long as you've looked at the manual and know the entrance to Ridley's lair is further below, there's actually only two spots in the area that the path can be. It also made me finally understand the logic of the repeating rooms in Kraid's lair. The place is essentially just three shafts with the repeat rooms all stacked on top of each other in between them. Anyway, this isn't some sort of criticism towards you or anything. I've just found it interesting how many people say they refuse to do this despite seemingly never even giving it a shot.

    • I tried it a bit when doing the Zelda video! (Wink wink plug plug) Admittedly while part of it came down to simply being to save time, another part of it felt like I wouldn't be able to properly convey some of the deeper aspects of the world. In theory it sounded fun and I really wanted to give it a shot, believe me I did, but when attempting to actually do it, it felt like I was going to spend time on something that would only end up making me more frustrated. I was so traumatized that when Super Metroid came out, and I played it for the first time, I was instantly reminded of its predecessor, and those fears came right back! But somehow, I wasn't as scared. I managed to push through my fears until I got stuck in norfair, because I didn't know anything about the ice beam, let alone where it is. And that's how my first playthrough ended. But just like somecallmeJohnny, This game was my gateway drug back into the series, And it made me a bona fide fan for life. If you’re still taking requests, I’m a huge fan of the classic final fantasy games. I know they are a time sync as RPGs, but the pixel remasters on switch and PS4 do have boosts (xp and money multipliers, turning off encounters). You should give them a try. Edit: If RPGs are too daunting, try the Mega Man games.

    @bobdobalina839@bobdobalina8394 ай бұрын
    • That's kind of the mentality i went with and probably will going forward if I play something similar to this in the future. Knowing that certain designs were made to be intentionally difficult to keep the game longer, or to buy the strategy guide or whatever in order to get through it.

      @Guardison@Guardison4 ай бұрын
    • I think the intention behind the NES Zelda games - to get players talking about and sharing their in-game findings - that is often cited in reviews of at least the first game can apply to "Metroid" as well. As a kid, I had an acquaintance with whom I tried to get ahead in "Metroid" over a few weeks. Lacking other friends who'd played this game, we couldn't get anywhere far into the game world, neither of us were creative enough to just bomb every floor tile and shoot every wall and ceiling tile. I don't think I would ever have found my way to Ridley without a map.

  • I recently discovered a fanmade reimagining of NES Metroid called Metroid Planets that I thought was really fun. It adds a proper map screen and save system to the game, it rebalances item drops from enemies so they drop heals and missiles at a rate that's reasonable, it allows you to respawn with full health, it fixes pretty much all of the jank from NES Metroid without removing its charm (no more getting hit in room transitions, smoother character control, no more slowdown, etc.). It even adds multiplayer and a randomizer to the game. So if you want a more enjoyable way to revisit that game without playing Zero Mission, I think that's probably your best option?

    @EnvyOmicron@EnvyOmicron4 ай бұрын
    • That's not a bad suggestion, I might have to take a look into it! I was noticing that item drops were feast or famine with a lot of enemies and I wasn't sure if it was a fixed thing or not. It wasn't so much that it was terrible but you'll definitely notice a lot of clips where I have like, no health lmao

      @Guardison@Guardison4 ай бұрын
  • In Super Metroid you don't have to keep pressing select for sub weapons, the item cancel button. In your example with going from super missiles to regular, press item cancel then select. 2 button presses instead of 5.

  • As a kid, I loved Metroid 1. And Super Metroid was amazing. that said, one thing I hate about the original Metroid game was that there's one spot needed to progress which requires infinate bomb jumping. And that technique is so inconsistent and finicky that you practically needed a Turbo controller.

    @faerieknight2298@faerieknight2298Ай бұрын
    • I got a little better at bomb jumping the more that I played but it's definitely not a skill that was ever really built up. That's kind of the problem with Metroid 1 overall is that there's a lot of things it expects you to know/do, without properly giving you the tools to learn/discover it. Not saying it needs to hold your hand of course, but thankfully the series would get much better at giving the player the tools they need to discover on their own.

    • @@Guardison I hear you .. I'm 38 so I grew up with these games .. I was able to beat Metroid 2 on game boy by myself but as a adult I played Metroid 1 for the first time and was like nope I need a guide.... I think it also has something to do with as you're older you don't have time to run around trying to figure out stuff like you did when you where a kid that got it for their birthday and this was all they had until Christmas
