The way the content is presented - easily for the layperson to comprehend - along with high production quality and Fred, its host, these are all reasons to subscribe and has led to its success.

I'll be honest, I have been pleasantly surprised by LGA's improvement. Feel much much better, and at least compared to other US airports, it seems much much better. Wish they did the Ferry and the subway connection, that would skyrocket overall experience by exponential amount.

The demand to connect LaGuardia to the NYC subway is through the roof, as it’ll help those from that side of Queens, the Bronx, and Upper Manhattan, and possibly others from across the city. The ferry is quite inexpensive to implement. Adding additional transit will increase demand as well, as the appetite for such a service will help the surrounding communities develop.
They do everything in such a piecemeal fashion here in the US. The last bit about not connecting the bronx, so infuriating.

Infrastructure is one of those things that we take completely for granted , but causes the biggest problems when it stops working.

@@ThePervertedHymnsI am a local and I’m glad we are bringing these changes. The need to replace our aging infrastructure, develop more housing (besides single family homes), and make NYC the bustling city it once was will aid all of us.
How many years will they be inconvenienced and at what cost to them or even the economy itself from having to offload freight onto local roads? This isn't a summer project.
@@cityguyusaStill worth it. The country would face astronomical issues if the tunnels under the Hudson gave way. Same with BQE, not to mention if the cantilever collapsed it would kill hundreds of people, and when asked why it would come down to indecisiveness and lack of will to complete projects that needed tending to ages ago. There simply isn't a way these projects get done and nobody is inconvenienced. Inconveniences come with living anywhere.
I can only imagine how amazing the cantilevers on the BQE were when it was built. People must've been in awe!
It’s crumbling and still beautiful haha. Brilliant engineering. In much need of an upgrade. But, the promenade remains iconic.
It ruined so many neighborhoods, in awe is a way to put it... Robert Morris was an idiot and he will go down in history as one of the worst planners ever... already is...

I was born & lived in Brooklyn for over 50 years. I love NYC. But the cost of living (prices, taxes, tolls) & poor infrastructure were big reasons I finally left in 2020. I was fed up with decades of poor planning, mismanagement, lack of foresight & political will. We endured endless projects on the Staten Island Expressway, outrageously expensive tolls from Brooklyn to Staten Island/NJ, decades of work on roads/bridges, skyscrapers in the outer boroughs that block sunlight, the lack of enough tunnels under the Hudson River, the terrible Port Authority Bus Terminal & Penn Station, and a watered-down Second Avenue Subway project that took over 100 years to get to this point (and it is still not finished!). The successes are few. I felt trapped. And family outside of NYC that wanted to visit, stayed away many times because of cost. They all used to live in NYC, but went South. I miss NYC & its people. But I found freedom of movement, cheaper travel expenses and peace of mind elsewhere. I am rooting for NYC to turn it around. Good things are finally happening. But it will take many decades to undo the damage.

As an outsider they need to rebuild the old Penn Station, with modern improvements. It was wrong to demolish it and New Yorkers deserve better. Unrelated but I think the B1M should look at the Rio Grande Plan in Salt Lake City.

The Penn Station part is so depressing. Shinjuku Station sees seven times as many boardings, (subways, JR and private lines combined) and yet somehow manages on-time performance in the high-ninety-percent range.
Again, comparing a system mostly built after WW2 to a system built decades earlier. Also comparing a system built with money from the national government to a locally funded subway.
When I'm having dinner with my mom, I've been often having videos like this playing. She loves the topics and the presentation of it all. And this one has basically been like our playlist for the week (she usually finishes dinner quickly). Being from the area, it's great for us to hear about the things being done to make NYC better and gives us some great talking points as well. Thanks for the entertainment and keep up the great work!

As someone who has worked on the project for nearly a decade, I’m a little disappointed you did not include East Side Access (now Grand Central Madison Terminal) project… it was shown in the intro and referenced a couple times in the other sections. Otherwise a great video, and always love watching the B1M content

As someone who frequents I-95 between Philly and Boston, I think there should be an expressway around NYC and George Washington Bridge, that similar to the NJ Turnpike, has all the amenities and only 2 exits to NYC to help clear up bottlenecks and jams through the city by reducing the amount of traffic moving through the city.
Its currently called i-287 through New Jersey and it puts you across the Hudson River at Nyack, NY upon The Tappan Zee Bridge, read - 'The Tappan Zee Bridge' - and then the Cross Westchester Expressway to i-95 onward up through Connecticut and thereafter, New England and Boston
They need to build a freeway tunnel under Manhattan. If Sydney can do it so can we. They also need an orbital subway train and a bridge connecting north Long Island to Connecticut. What would REALLY help is a MagLev line from Boston to DC connecting all other cities along the route.
No mention of the replacement of the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal. That project is further along than the interborough and has the world's highest amount of bus arrivals/departures. Ya coulda had 6 projects.
I got tasked out on a job some years back, we had to do an emergency runway job, the water had been corroding the underground utilities, it was December and freezing, we had to open up a ditch about 10 meters long. It struck me that they didn’t even have blue print or anything on where the utilities were. No heavy equipment allowed as a result of this. FAA inspectors on our ass…. Glad to see LaGuardia’s improvement.

Was great to see all these videos again :) as a long time LGA Terminal B traveler, I must admit I shed a tear watching this, thinking about how much the new terminal makes coming and going from nyc so invigorating, emotional, and appropriately grand. The old terminal was a chore, a procedural necessity more representative of the city’s dirtiness and congestion than of its undeniable greatness. Thanks for all the great work you do bringing these projects to us in such detail :)
I always love and appreciate how Fred rolls the ads into the narrative of the video. Its a skill that other videographers should learn. Good vid, as a Chicagoan who LOVES NY, I'm glad to hear its getting some next level upgrades!
This is literally the only channel where I don't skip the ads. Squarespace, Manscaped, Athletic Greens, Vessi, whatever they are, I tend to skip them. But here I always let them run because they're just... kinda natural. Especially the ones like Autodesk which tie directly into the subject Those feel like Autodesk went "Hey, there's this awesome project using our stuff. We'll give you $X if you wanna do a video about it, just as long as you mention our product." And hell, he even manages to make the Masterworks ones a smooth segue usually.
I can confidently say that the lga renovations are a huge improvement. The airport is so much nicer, cleaner has way better food and shopping.
I agree! I always avoided la Guardia before but I recently checked it out 2 months ago and it was amazing!!! So much better than before!
As a designer I'm still baffled by the praise that the 'the construction sector' gets for solving issues around staging of construction when good 'design' is where any project is set up for success of failure. BTW enjoy your content, keep it up!
Designing something and constructing something are two different things. You can be very unique and creative with designing something to solve an issue - and a lot of times the design does solve a major issue. A lot of things aren’t considered when designing something, such as how it will get built. It takes a lot of creativity and problem solving to build something. Both sectors deserve praise - the designers for solving a problem, and the contractors deserve praise for constructing a challenging design all while keeping the existing airport active.
Designers build things on paper and through 3D modeling and contractors actually build it in real life. Both parties are equally important and deserve equal praise.

Chicago's airport has some of these same problems - overcrowding, low ceilings, outdated terminals all over the place. Seems like they are also updating parts of it right now. I think America is undergoing an infrastructure renaissance right now.

Considering that very same military needs reliable rail lines, switchyards, tunnels, bridges, dams, waterways, highways, airports, ports, and levees, I'd say they have a billion reasons for infrastructure not to crumble.

Loved the way you divided up the videos, just starting part 2 now, loving it so far.
During the 90’s I worked for the Port Authority Aviation Dept. LGA was like a step back in time. There were still smoking sections, decor from the 50’s, the Shuttle was a nice touch but because the Airport is surrounded by water the fog, geese on the short runways & traffic getting out there caused continued delays.
The Bay Ridge tracks are not "abandoned" by any means - freight still travels along those tracks, from the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
That line is Long Island's ONLY connection to the country's freight rail system, via the Hell's Gate Bridge or the Port Authority's car float operation at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. A number of rail customers are located along the line, including MTA's own track shop at Linden Yard. Making the Interborough Express passenger only, will effectively cut Long Island from nations freight rail network and will drive a nail in the coffin of the freight rail tunnel under to New York harbor.
The whole opening segment about LaGuardia shows how even though it is great to serve so many people, it can also have a bad side by causing overcrowding. Upgrades to increase density are necessary, and it's great to see them happening for those reasons. As a San Francisco Bay Area resident, I can definitely empathize with New Yorkers on endless economic activity causing housing prices to skyrocket and a desperate need for more infrastructure to fit as many people's needs as possible and keep the economy thriving instead of stagnating
The interborough express sounds like an ideal application for an 'S-Bahn' style system - a mix between metro and heavy rail, that connects through the city (or the outer boroughs in this case) and then fans out into the surrounding region.
LIRR is already an S Bahn type system, just without through running Penn. LIRR, MNRR and NJT operate more like S Bahns with high frequency and very big, densely packed trains rather than a typical commuter railroad. But none of the systems can through run on each other's networks, MNRR terminates at GC but will reach Penn eventually. LIRR operates on 3rd rail and can't cross the North River tunnels into NJ, and NJT operates on overhead wire and can only through run up to Sunnyside Yard on the Queens side of the east river tunnels (they use the Amtrak yard to park trains during off peak hours). LIRRs operating speeds may also be too low for the high speed NEC tracks in NJ (LIRR operates at max 80mph line speed, NJT operates at 100mph on NEC track and Amtrak does 125-150mph on NEC track) For Interburough Express the subway makes the most logical sense, it will be mainly connecting subway lines which will allow easy transfers on the cheap subway fare rather than a separate much more expensive LIRR fare.

Love the content and great to rewatch some of this stuff, it just a treat. I'd love to see loads more smaller construction project with impact e.g. over here in netherlands in the north Groningen is undergoing a multi billion euro project to completely revamp it's access through new highways and new public transport access. Nonetheless keep the content coming :)

Hudson and Penn Station project will have biggest impact on airspace issue. More trains going long distance will help reduce demand for short flights. For BQE and truck problems theres a long standing project the Cross Harbor Freight tunnel idea. Better freight train access into NYC could do a lot to relieve demand on NYC roads from trucks.

Definitely gotta agree with Peter on the time when LGA became feeling outdated - doesn't help in terminal capacity, and ramp utilization either I'd imagine, that sometimes throughout the 80s, 90s, and even 2000s, airlines would occasionally use larger jets - 767s (-223s from American, sometimes 767-400s from Delta), DC-10s, L-1011 TriStars, Airbus A300s - in/out of the airport... which IMO is not a problem with the airlines using them, or a problem with the aircraft themselves, but the airport they were being squeezed in.

I would kill for a circle line in Chicago. There were talks to make one but the plans have been shelved. It makes way more sense now that work-from-home is much more prevalent.

The way the BQE is being repaired is insane if you see it yourself. They close off both lanes and make 4 mergeing lanes squeeze into the shoulder so that 3 guys on a lift can patch a small section of the ceiling. Where are the construction crews, if you're going to create massive traffic jams get shit done.

During the pandemic my partner and I lived in the Upper East Side. I would ride the 2nd Ave extension all the time and I remember surveyors offering a free ride on a Metrocard for answering questions like, "would you say this station is clean? too warm? too cold?" I wasn't aware of the entire plan of extending to Harlem, but I had an inkling the survey was related to that possibility. I told them how as an architecture student and native NYer I thought it was a beautiful success. Great aesthetics, comfortable central air, the open plan exposing the double height tunnel shape, its honestly amazing. The Q also never ran smoother (could be a bit faster though). Hopefully they get the approval to complete the project.
First airport in NY I used was LaGuardia and I was like 😳

As a New Yorker, I lament that the city only provides connection transfers in Manhattan… This creates a funnel system that is unsustainable as we see today with congestion. The city needs to create a line that goes from the Bronx into Queens. Not more Manhattan lines…
One thing I've always wondered is why cargo and passenger traffic always share the same roads. Is there anything against creating strategic cargo-transfer points at a city's edge for trucks and trains to deliver their cargo, then use dedicated transport lines - be it road, rail, metro - to key distribution points within the city? Especially the US seems to have clear residential and commercial zoning, so it should work extra well there.
That’s essentially the system that’s in place now, the issue is there no space for those hubs in nyc itself. Most of that infrastructure is across the river in New Jersey so the only way to get goods from the ports and rail hubs to business is by the few highways we have.

Thats where the problem lies, american highways / intercity highways generally dont have junction roundabouts unlike here in the UK. Here on major motorways, city major routes have junction roundabouts that allow for traffic to be diverted when closures are put in place for maintenance etc
Surprised this was only about NYC and not NY. I know there is some issue with building inspections and scaffolding that they are trying to speed up as well that would really help. I think that the subways getting the funding they need with new open platform cars would make one of the biggest initial differences for NYC. The BQE also needs a repair desperately.

Inter Borough Express could eventually form a subway ring road serving not just NYC boroughs' but those nearby cities in New Jersey lining the Hudson River. ALl those Hudson New Jersey Cities are currently near stagnant and need a major reason to revitalize into more dynamic cities.
I had a trip to Tehran, Iran, and surprised me that Tehran Metro has more than one hundred and fifty stations and the trains that connect between the cities were very clean and advanced despite the embargo.
It's a combination of wokeism, capitalism, and outsourcing that's leaving the US behind. There is a "not in my backyard" mentality by citizens, investors want to make money on projects, and projects on the scale of these haven't been done in the US in quite some time. If people there were willing to accept taxes and the government gave more than market value for homes (ie 120 to 150%) and just pushed projects ahead there wouldn't be the crumbling infrastructure. Granted NY State does have taxes, but nothing like what is seen in most European countries.

Here is a solution for LaGuardia passengers going to Long Island. Create a Ferry that goes directly from LaGuardia and stops at different points along the Long Island Sound river at Long Island Ports. That way, family members could just meet their family and friends at those ports and drive them the rest of the way to their destination in Long Island. That would lessen congestion in Queens, and along Long Island highways/expressways.
I think the single biggest factor in the relative success of the 2nd ave line is the "relative" improvement on the Lexington line. Anyone who has ridden the Lex can tell you its overcrowded, aging and was in need of help. Once the 2nd ave line is complete things should improve greatly for the 4,5 and 6 lines.

I looked up at the Manhattan Bridge and noticed that the deck was made up of wooden planks in places. I love the old bridges, but maybe it's time NYC replaced a few.

Drinking coffee made from syrup and hot water mixed in a machine at rehab housing in Las Vegas while watching this video and where we have our own infrastructure problems like the F1 that came and left and was hated by locals now we have Superbowl coming and there are orange cones everywhere.
The problem with the current BQE, is that one administration is passing the buck to another without any major fixes. Then they place blame on everybody when the structure fails. As I was walking toward the exit of the Promenade, I saw corroded rebar sticking out from the walkway end concrete.

I've been thru LaGuardia MANY times over the last 10-15 years, and I agree it was progressively F***ING AWFUL, to the point I would pay MUCH more to go thru either of the other NYC airports, crap as they both also are. But I went thru the new LaGuardia recently, (admittedly at a somewhat quieter time) and it was actually a notably pleasant experience. Looking forward to the whole project completing as well. 🤞

Very sad about the old Penn station building. It’s during the Robert Moses time. With the exception of the Central Park zoo. He also divided the Bronx by adding roads and highways through it. After the demolition of The Penn station. New Yorkers had enough of it. I still wish they realized that before hand.
Rethink Penn is the best thing here and would be an big honor for NY and architects all over the world.

I'm not sure why La Guardia's re-build is laudered as so clever and innovative. Large airports all over the world have been doing this for decades
anything that needs to be fixed has a business attached to it. the reason why cities doesn't get things replaced completely is because these companies makes hundreds of millions from going around patching up the infrastructure instead of just replacing the whole damn thing

once you figured out when, how and which E train to go anywhere at the Jackson Heights station in Queens, I dont think there is much that can phase you. hence why I've never felt outta place at LaGuardia. Personally, driving into NY is more of a hassal then flying in. At least flying, You dont have to worry about crashing into 5 other cars all doing 90, while tryin to merge into the exit lane off the turnpike. You miss that exit and you can kiss the next hour goodbye smdh
I think that in cities of the future, if you want cars & vans, they need to be underground safe from the elements. This also reduces noise & allows greenery & walkways to be on top. And in addition to that weight needs to be limited, so that streets last a lot longer.
Am i the only one who had to resist laughing really hard when that shrub-guy just went "the only restaurants in this AIR-PORT were fast food and other quick bites?" like: "Yeah.... it's an airport? the fuck you expecting? 4 star restaurants you can only get to after you went through security?" xD

I've lived in NYC for over 25 years. Moved, and it took another 10 years for renovations to LGA and JFK. New trains, but same delayed and crowded train lines. Still inconvenient public transit routes to airports. The BQE won't be ever be realigned either. The use of eminent domain in the past for car-centric infrastructure has come to collect the sanity of the present and future til kingdom come. Eminent domain isn't feasible anymore for such dense urban areas and NIMBY will fight tooth and nail even if compensated well over market value. I'm not a cynical crank; I'm a former New Yorker that still visits every month and experiences the same or worse congestion, train and bus delays, and filthy streets since the 90s. The mantra of NYC needs revising - if you can make it here, pack your bags and make it outta here.
The new LGA terminals make the passenger experience quite pleasant The information that larger aircraft can be accommodated is erroneous - the 2 runways are only about 7000 feet in length limiting the airport to 737/A320 families of aircraft
The fact that the subway doesn't run to either JFK or LaGuardia just tells you how hard it is to do anything in NYC. Both airports should've had Subway lines going directly to the airports decades ago and maybe even LIRR lines. That is why Newark is the best airport for Manhattan access, EWR is built right next to the NEC main line and the airport's people mover goes right to the train station, NJT will get you to Penn station in 15-20min depending on time of day.
Sure seems obvious and surely not too hard to do that Interborough Express. Basically have the right of way and currently only once a day used freight line it's a no brainer.
This has been said before but I wanna say it again, the MTA should build all their stations cut and cover. Instead of mining the stations, they should mine the tunnels so they fit two tracks right next to each other instead of twin tubes, cuz I heard that NATM or NMT is cheaper than TBMs and it's help develop efficient transit tunnels.
I've seen the project. I've also seen the greasing indicators. These could be fine.
