  • a word on those 'biological constraints'. what they're referring to is a small tag at the end of the DNA strand in each cell, known as an RNA telomere. These are essentially a 'tag' of material that tells the replication process to end here. As cells divide, the tag gets shorter, until it runs out and just keeps going. Your immune system i largely responsible for taking care of this. With the advent of CRiSPR- CAS9, we now have the tools to reverse that shortening, by reconstructing the telomere directly onto the DNA strand. What we're missing is the invention of a delivery mechanism that can get this into each of your cells, indivudually. there's only one system that does that [except for your eyes and a few other places]: your immune system. and it REALLY doesn't like foreign objects around them. TLDR: this study has the humongous flaw of not envisioning the last step in the process, which is probably what its financial backers were trying for in the first place.

      @cuileth3369@cuileth33692 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly! And the real issue is that there IS an enzyme that re-lengthens those poly-adenosine tails after each round of mitosis - it is called telomerase. The problem is that we stop making it at puberty, and do not yet know how to restart production after that. But the more we learn about the epigenetic triggers for turning specific genes, or groups of genes, on and off, the more likely we are to break that constraint, which we have known about for 20 years, at least. The question is, should we......? Given increasing amounts of resources that would be allocated to immortal humans, I suspect not... Extending our lifespans indefinitely by removing the natural breakdown of the body would require massive shifts in how we approached population growth, resource management, and economic structures, and could well precipitate significant acceleration of various social and ecological collapses. Then again, maybe I have read too much dystopian sci-fi. 🙃

      @djinndaurbanbohemian@djinndaurbanbohemian2 жыл бұрын
    • "RNA telomere"? - You were so close. The telomeric ends of our chromosomes is still DNA and not RNA. Thanks to how our chromosomes replicate, each replication causes the shortening of one strand of our chromosomes. No, there is no way to avoid it regardless of what investors have been told.

      @HH-mw4sq@HH-mw4sq2 жыл бұрын
    • My only comment... One usually puts the TL:DR at the top. Who's reading the entire thesis just for the summary? People online are high. We just want the results. If you could animate them, then get a narrator that mispronounces words... that'd be super appreciated. Thanks.

      @dhotnessmcawesome9747@dhotnessmcawesome97472 жыл бұрын
    • Well...no not really. That wasn't the point of the study at all, merely to determine whether the aging trajectory is shared among many species, which closed the debate on whether environmental or biological factors ultimately control longevity, which up until now, hadn't been determined. The guardian title give click baity, but the study itself really wasn't meant to be like that ;)
