I visited Erbil few months ago, it is definitely not Iraq! Very safe, language is Kurdish, but most of the people speak English too. I used US dollars without any issues.

welcome to my kurdistan, i have a recommendation for you, you should visit Halabja city and there are plenty of tourist areas around, particularly Byara, is a remarkable village there is a crazy line border between Iraq and Iran you can go and see it, everyone are allowed to across the border its just splendid. Hope you go.....BTW I live in Halabja thats why i knew this place.

The Lake in the square was drained and fenced off when I was there in February. Not sure why. Maybe it was a precautionary measure due to the earthquake
