My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

  • Okay. This is why you’re an old beautiful soul! Not only did your parents raise you right but because their parents were such kindred spirits!

  • I love to hear a young person appreciate the unchanged, old, historic homes with their timeless beauty right down to the old vintage stove which will provide warmth and delicious food, a welcoming place for family and friends. Your little cottage might be small, but you will be surprised how many family and friends will squeeze together for a holiday tea.

    • I have a corgi someone dumped. I tried for about 6 months to find his owner but to no avail. The vet says he's about 13vyears old. I cant imagine dumping a dog but it's even more heartbreaking when it's an old dog with health problems. He's diabetic and requires 2 shots a day but he's such a sweetheart he's worth every dime I spend on vet bills and medicine.

  • Save a few broken Terricotta tiles, ones that are a clean break that still fit together well, place one or two or three broken squares mixed in across the floor occasionally with the good ones...it helps make the floor look more original authentic, 100's of years old, not so perfect. It will be cool when you do your Chateau tours and listings of the ones for sale. I still giggle when I think of the time when she got the Kinder plastic toys and you had the pole dancing fireman Smurf and you tried to make her happy and then you told her.... "A smurf you shall have." I like the playmobil figurines that you got and it was cute when she had him sitting with the seatbelt with the Mini Micheal on the trip and when you took it back to hold to your chest. Stay creative and have lots of fun. I really like your artwork, watching the cooking and sanding, and playing piano. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • Michael, consider underfloor heating for the cottage, you could tie it into the hot water boiler in the Aga you are planning to rebuild.

    @marclefebvre1659@marclefebvre16594 жыл бұрын
    • Yes! It would be invisible, and the terra cotta tiles over it would hold and radiate the heat for a long time, saving a lot of money on heating! Great idea.

    • I don’t think the older Agas heat water systems, and the bathroom will be at the opposite end of the house. Wouldn’t under floor heating crack the terracotta tiles? Someone tell me if I’m incorrect.

      @Italiana911@Italiana9114 жыл бұрын
    • @@Italiana911 Hi Susie, thanks for the comment. Michael indicated the the Aga he is rebuilding has a hot water heater built in and that he could use it to heat the cottage with radiators. I don;t think the terracotta tiles would crack, because the way the under floor heating system works is that you lay to ground piping under a 4 to 6 inch layer of concrete, which Michael also indicated he wanted to put in before relaying the tiles, so I think it would work. The underfloor heating is radiant and does not require extensive pressure nor high temps to heat a building. I think it could work, but, it was just a suggestion. Let know if you have any other questions.

Her son, my nephew is one of the most amazing artist. I love love what you are doing with the chateau. I would give anything to be there and see it in person. Thank you so much for your you tube channel.💕💕💕💕

  • Michael, use a wet saw and cut the corners off of that old striped tile. It is still large enough to use as a trivet. Take photos before during and after. You may forget how something goes back in place and where wiring and plumbing is in the walls. I had to take photos of my antique crystal chandelier before taking it apart to restore it. I too have an old home and we have done quite a lot without the aid of contractors. I enjoy your and Stephanie's channel. 👍 Your B roll footage with music is beautifully done!

  • Nice to see your grandparents home. It really is special and was obviously so for you. Family connections can make a huge difference for our emotional health. I think that’s why so many like watching your vlog and Stephanie’s. It’s nice to see. I ditched my cable quite a few years ago because the big thing to watch was a Real Housewives franchise which was just drama and ridiculous with meaningless fights and curated drama.
