My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Okay. This is why you’re an old beautiful soul! Not only did your parents raise you right but because their parents were such kindred spirits!
I love to hear a young person appreciate the unchanged, old, historic homes with their timeless beauty right down to the old vintage stove which will provide warmth and delicious food, a welcoming place for family and friends. Your little cottage might be small, but you will be surprised how many family and friends will squeeze together for a holiday tea.
I'm "young" and always appreciated them.. I have a disdain for city type modern builds.
I agree!
“i can just about lift it” *crash* “well i couldn’t lift it” 😂😂 my favorite part of the video
Strangely, I read this comment word-for-word, exactly as he was saying it, lol
You guys should get corgis so you can be royals and have cute loafs wandering around.
I have a corgi someone dumped. I tried for about 6 months to find his owner but to no avail. The vet says he's about 13vyears old. I cant imagine dumping a dog but it's even more heartbreaking when it's an old dog with health problems. He's diabetic and requires 2 shots a day but he's such a sweetheart he's worth every dime I spend on vet bills and medicine.
I should add that when I found him I assumed he was lost but 6 months later someone found video on their home security camera that he had been dumped.
@@helenahandbasket3016 thank you for taking care of the elderly dog. That's so sad he got dumped but it's better he lives with someone like you than someone that would dump him.
Some people are so cruel. Thank you for taking him in and giving him the love he deserves. 🥰🥰🥰
Standard Poodles are a lot more dignified. Make excellent guard dogs. And would be great companions for young Ernest.
Love your grandparent's home! Your Grand Dad's "wearing the same clothes I got married in" cracked me up!! Please let us BUY YOUR ART PRINTS!!
Yes, please! Get on Etsy 🙌 you could probably even put pictures from the chateau and ground on there too.
Yes please!
Michael you should put your designs on Spoonflower custom fabric and wallpaper website... and I could buy the fabric prints! Your work is beautiful. So talented!
Save a few broken Terricotta tiles, ones that are a clean break that still fit together well, place one or two or three broken squares mixed in across the floor occasionally with the good ones...it helps make the floor look more original authentic, 100's of years old, not so perfect. In restoration of ancient homes, we call it 'character '...😉
I love that idea
@@DoingItOurselvesOfficial Broken ones would also be good to create border edges for the garden, I remember terracotta bits and broken pots as a border edging growing up in Hampshire.
I kept thinking the same thing :) It'll be a lovely little detail, with lots of added character, just like you said!
Organ and Cathedral B-roll?! Just when I thought this vlog couldn’t get any better the lovely Michael treats us to this wonderful prelude 🎼🥰
I'm so excited for the gardeners cottage to be restored. I have no doubt it's going to be stunning. I cant really afford to become a patron or donate at this time so I make sure to always let the advertisements play. It's not much but if everyone did it, I'm sure even that would help. I enjoy your content very much and In do know how much work goes into filming and especially editing. I've done it. Editing is quite time consuming.
I always let the ads play. They do help our friends Michael & Stephanie continue their vlogs 👍
Same here! I completely watch all the adds coz for now its all I can do help. 😊
@SMG he must be. There are ads.
A lot of us can't afford to donate, but i thought it would have been kind of Michael to thank us anyway.
please forgive me if I am being completely dense … but … are you saying that by us watching the whole advertisement that Michael will get more money? if yes, I am perfectly happy to do that … currently I see the SKIP option and I am on it straight away.
When he was removing those tiles I kept thinking any minute hes gonna find that missing Malaysian woman...
Aeon V I was thinking the deep elevator shaft‼️😲
🤣🤣🤣
Aeon V 🤣🤣
im feeling some halloween vlog edition vibes here
Doing It Ourselves omg your hairline is sooo far back wow
I've been waiting all week for this video, anxiously awaiting the start of the cottage renovation. And you didn't let me down, great progress Michael. After seeing what your grandparents did with their place, I see where you got your passion to restore old buildings. I'm still waiting for my haircut, we haven't opened up yet,(California) I've had to resort to giving myself two haircuts ... it's a good thing I don't go out in public.
It's wonderful. Another DIY with talent. It must be genetic
The Multi-talented Mr Petherick
That dream is now in progress Michael. That light of happiness shines so bright in your eyes...that makes me smile. Your vision for the cottage is excellent, so excited to follow the progression of its finished glory!! Keep following that dream!!!! Love and hugs!!!
Just when we thought your family could be any cuter, we meet your grandparents! Happy 61st Anniversary to them.
It’s HAPPENING!!! SO glad to see the beginning of the process!! Thank you to EVERYONE who is helping Michael to realize this dream-aren’t we all thrilled for him!!
Has anyone else noticed how amazingly gorgeous Michael's eyes are? It's almost to the point of distraction. I love the videos and everything you're doing to restore this chateau. So incredibly talented in everything you do .
Just when I thought I’d finished watching all the videos of the channels I am subscribed to, you uploaded 😍 your channel and Stephanie’s channel are my current favourite right now. You guys really make quarantine so much more bearable!😋
Salma Matin yes I feel the same ! 😊
If you like Michael et Stephanie's channels, you should also have a look at another called Château du Mareuil, Lee and Belinda. Different again, but very good.
Can you make your adventure an hour long, cant get enough love it
My grandmother used to have a few small pieces of blue a white Spode that she kept in a locked cabinet. She never used them as far as I can remember, just had them as heirlooms. This brought back some unexpected memories of being a child allowed to get them out to look at the patterns. Your grandparents' home is like what her house aspired to be.
Oh your grandparents and their home are just lovely. And Michael your artwork is phenomenal, thank you for sharing all of this.
I love the endings where you show lovely views of your grounds while hearing the birds chirping, and the beautiful music playing. Very peaceful and calming.
Your Grandparents seem like such lovely people. I hope they had a nice anniversary. Also Michael, your artwork is so beautiful. I'm an artist myself and I was amazed when you said you had created that painting at such a young age. I love your work. Thank you for another great video.
We are so blessed that someone as personable and multi-talented as you, are sharing this journey with us. Making videos is a LOT of work--thank you. We are blessed! And future generations thank you for preserving these architectural gems.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MICHAEL! Can't wait to see how your dreams progress and become reality. I enjoy the chemistry you have with Steph at the Chateau and on adventures. It will be cool when you do your Chateau tours and listings of the ones for sale. I still giggle when I think of the time when she got the Kinder plastic toys and you had the pole dancing fireman Smurf and you tried to make her happy and then you told her.... "A smurf you shall have." I like the playmobil figurines that you got and it was cute when she had him sitting with the seatbelt with the Mini Micheal on the trip and when you took it back to hold to your chest. Stay creative and have lots of fun. I really like your artwork, watching the cooking and sanding, and playing piano. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Dear Michael, I came here dying to see you get started on the Gardner's Cottage, but now I wish for more of a tour of your grandparents' amazing home as well as their stories. Some of us would even enjoy following you on your journeys through France.
Michael, consider underfloor heating for the cottage, you could tie it into the hot water boiler in the Aga you are planning to rebuild.
Yes! It would be invisible, and the terra cotta tiles over it would hold and radiate the heat for a long time, saving a lot of money on heating! Great idea.
I don’t think the older Agas heat water systems, and the bathroom will be at the opposite end of the house. Wouldn’t under floor heating crack the terracotta tiles? Someone tell me if I’m incorrect.
@@Italiana911 Hi Susie, thanks for the comment. Michael indicated the the Aga he is rebuilding has a hot water heater built in and that he could use it to heat the cottage with radiators. I don;t think the terracotta tiles would crack, because the way the under floor heating system works is that you lay to ground piping under a 4 to 6 inch layer of concrete, which Michael also indicated he wanted to put in before relaying the tiles, so I think it would work. The underfloor heating is radiant and does not require extensive pressure nor high temps to heat a building. I think it could work, but, it was just a suggestion. Let know if you have any other questions.
I have to say I love your style of delivery. You are wonderful at making the viewer feel like this is a personal conversation. Your camera shots and aerial view are breathtaking as well.
I absolutely love your videos! Your ideas for the gardeners cottage as well as seeing what has been done/will be done around the chateau is so refreshing. Watching HGTV has become so cringy with some of the old homes that are found and renovated to be modern. Thank you for keeping the history and sharing it with us! Also very happy to have found another fan of Peter rabbit!!!
This just makes me realize Michael, You look so like Jude Law..but more handsome, younger.
I made the same observation and comment, adding that he even sounds like him.
I've thought the same thing since I started watching a few weeks ago. He really does 😊
He has the most beautiful eyes.
Jude Law x Callum Best.
He reminds me of Robert Pattinson actually
Omg i forgot about this! (Runs to get a beer and snacks from the fridge!)
Drinking one right now too!🍺🍺🍺I absolutely adore Michael!💙💙
@@valeriejohnson5283 I have to be settled with zero distractions when this is on! I ignore the world for half an hour.
Yes you know it's good when you can watch 30 minutes and want more
It is so nice to see people like you and your family who care about history and who are putting in every effort to restore something that others would destroy ! Thank you so much :)
Why go to a gym when all you need to do is move oak doors and steel tracks. This is going to be a darling cottage, too bad vandals had to show up and do damage. Fortunately it’s easily fixed. Love this Chateau and property! You are are wonderful Micheal, such a talented man! Also the color of the stove is my favorite color!
And just like that! The dream starts to unfold. A big thank you to everyone who has donated to make this dream a reality. Stay blessed Michael, lots of love to all on your side 💖💖💖
I have the blue willow pattern, I actually started collecting out of college and many many years later when I became married we received a ton of blue willow from my wedding. I’m so grateful bc I use it everyday. It’s so classy and goes beautiful on the table. Love your Nan! She is beautiful!
What's even better than a ready-to-move-into cottage? A cottage which needs you to do it up and put your stamp on everything. I'm so jealous - not in a nasty, troll-y way but in a supportive, admiring way...
Every morning, I walk by the church to go at the office and when the organist plays tears of emotion arise. Nice haircut , Michael ! I have to go , too Thank you for the videos, and I bless your love and the Incredible works done ( with your family) to save your french property. Thank you very much .
I love every bit of this and cannot wait to see more on the cottage. I am fixing up my Grandmothers old house that my sister and I bought and it gets exhausting at times. She passed away almost a year ago and I am doing my best at making her garden and home a place she would have loved. I am so glad that all the money is coming thru to save this beautiful place. I can see why, your vlogs are so enjoyable to watch.
Your grandparents have such a lovely home and I didn’t realize how talented of an artist you are Michael.
Hello from sunny north Shropshire I'm so happy that your amazing patrons are helping to fund what is going to be a beautiful home for you. I can't wait to see it. You really deserve this, as you are a lovely man and very talented. Its lovely to see your great, entertaining programme thank you geraldine Daly xxx
Your grandmother was stunning in that picture. It's always nice to have good pictures of yourself so you can look at them and say " I was gorgeous" .
I think it would be cool to put the red/blue striped tile into the flooring (like as a focal centerpiece or in an entryway or even tucked into a corner) to add a little story into the refurbishment!
Invest in a dolly and save your back bro! We need you to keep making videos ✌️
Just found these videos so I'm late to the game, but I must say that I like the little cottage more than I do the chateau. Doing the chateau themselves is what got my attention, I mean who would do that? But the the cottage is more relatable for most people and I am thrilled he is going back to make it look original. Blessings
That was a nice recap of your journey. Listening to your plans and knowing all the hard work you did put in to have the amazing cottage you have now, three years later. KZhead suggested this …
Oh my god! Wow. I just wrote an email to DIck & Angel at The Chateau last night asking about buying the bee hive floral cushion. I cannot tell you how much I love that. (I thought Angel designed it, but I’m so thrilled to find out it’s yours). I absolutely love it, it’s stunning. You are so talented 💖.
I live in Columbus , Ohio but am Estonian -- loved watching you w/ Stephanie & am glad you have your own channel now -- you are both so honest & sincere & everybody loves you both !! Your fans are w/ you on this journey -- hope Gran gives you some of the lovely blue Spode-- I collect it also-- see you next week !
Your music is always so peaceful & soothing, & I like that you don;t use a lot of it, but give us natural sounds!
If you made a merch store and sold prints of your art, I would absolutely buy anything you put up. Holy cow, your art is so stunning, I love it.
Ohh, the cathedral, your grandarents' house... such a delight! I have my grandmother's collection of blue& white china that I just recently decided to pull out and decorate with. We had been using them, but so many broke, and there aren't enough to use now, but I can at least display them. 💙❤💙❤💙
Amanda Gauthier-Parker I would love to see more of that Cathedral.
I collect Delft china, which is the same thing, only completely different.
Hello Michael. I’m so glad you are now able to work on your wee house: I know it’s going to be amazing. In your videos, I especially like the segments of rolling camera shots where you pause for a moment on a flower, or a long view of the lawns. In this one, the shot of the old wooden door in the stone wall was beautiful. Each ‘pause’ is a beautiful work of art. Thank-you for helping us see with the eyes of an artist.
Sooo exciting Michael to witness the restoration of the garderners cottage. Love your vision of the restoration and respecting history.
This video illustrates clearly why this channel is doing so well. Michael is talented and articulate, but very down to earth...easy to relate to. Personally, I would never choose to live in a grand building, but a gardener's cottage with an actual walled garden? Yes, please!
Would LOVE to see a time-lapse shot of tidying/ moving? Love this restoration!! I’m so eager to see how it all looks😊
I'd love to see a timelapse of you cleaning and restoring the cottage. That would probably be extremely satisfying.
Please do an unboxing when you receive your KZhead play button! Well done on your success, and I am so excited to see what’s coming for you.
YES PLEASE
This space is going to be so cozy and homey! What a great project! Can’t wait!!!
Michael, you’re incredibly kind, a fantastic artist and hard worker. Loved seeing your grandparents and the cottage.
Pleeease reproduce and sell your art I love the beehive lampshade!💛🐝love the peek Into your world 🏰
So impressed you are restoring this beautiful chateau and surrounding buildings. Our house is 109 years old and has stood the test of time. Must be fun scouring shops for fixtures and fittings. Keep up the great work. 👏
YOU ARE SOOOOO TALENTED....LOVE SEEING YOUR ARTWORK. Your grandmother is GORGEOUS!!!!
What a lovely place your grandparents have. You are so talented Michael.
I spotted it lol! You are the ‘local artist’ who designed Angel’s stunning wallpaper! Sublime.
I trust his name was mentioned!
@@patricialevi3190 ?
@@helengrunow5094 I hope Michael got the credit from Angel and acknowledgement for ‘his’ design an creativity and his name was mentioned?
@@patricialevi3190 Im afraid he didnt get proper recognition, i thought it was handled in a strange way at the time, too low key, especially because that work is one of the most beautiful ive ever seen in my life! i had no idea what had gone on when i commented. Have you watched Michaels video ‘the real reason i started a yt channel’? I hope he does more works in the future, he has such talent and i wish you all the best.x
@@helengrunow5094 thank you so much. Don’t you just detest somebody else taking credit more or less for another, persons wonderful talent? Michael,is a very sensitive character too and it must be very hurtful for him. The one thing he has going for him and nobody can take that away from him, is his creativity and talent! What thing I cannot forgive them for though is profiting and taking credit at his expense! What kind of people do that, that have any conscience? I will wait for Michael to someday bring out his line and be behind him all the way. In the meantime, I will not watch any vlogs from their channel or buy any merchandise bearing their name!
Your art is amazing. What a talent. The lampshade is stunning and all your own work 🦘🦘
I could live in that Chateau. Beautiful, and so glad seeing it being renovated.
It's so much fun watching your cottage from the very start. Thank you so much for taking us along. Can't get enough of seeing your artwork and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the pieces at your grandmother's house. Another wonderful video!
I just love your artwork! You should make prints and sell them❤
Thanks so much for the amazing journey you take us all on. So exciting seeing your progress on the Gardeners cottage. You and your family are amazing! Btw you don't need the BBC...your vlog is higher quality than anything they can produce. Much nicer in every way.
You are going to put a cupboard under the stairs, aren't you? The Gardeners cottage is going to be lovely. I'm looking forward to the progress.
Hello everyone from New Zealand!!
Hello Jill, my fellow NZ'er and french/chateau lover.
Hey there fellow Kiwi!
@Georgie Davey where in NZ are you ?
You are an amazing artist Michael and it was lovely to see your grandparents and their home. It is so sweet and cozy. Good start on the cottage.
Love your grandparents home ❤️ they are adorable ! You are a very talented artist!! Beautiful work
Hello from the USA. I just found your channel. I have watched all your videos. I think you are so very talented. A beautiful artist. My niece teaches art at a local high school. Her son, my nephew is one of the most amazing artist. I love love what you are doing with the chateau. I would give anything to be there and see it in person. Thank you so much for your you tube channel.💕💕💕💕
You have a beautiful soul, Michael. 🌞
You can do a time lapse when moving things or doing something
and deprive us of the opportunity to admire how a real man works?! Tu ta loca, mi manita 😀😀😀 No way 😀😀😀
galina dolbneva lol yea but you can still admire just in a quicker speed. 😄 I like to see the process in things so it would be cool to see time lapses every once in a while. Not saying every time he does something 😁
You're making great progress,Michael! Your paintings are wonderful - your grandma is a lucky woman to have a grandson like you!
Thank you Michael, absolutely superb! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️🇦🇺
You seem so happy in this video, Michael! I can't wait to see the cottage in all its glory!
I have been cutting down my screen time recently, but I always look forward to watching your videos over weekend (it’s Saturday morning now in Singapore). I love the information and the way you share them in every single episode. Keep it up, Michael!
Michael, use a wet saw and cut the corners off of that old striped tile. It is still large enough to use as a trivet. Take photos before during and after. You may forget how something goes back in place and where wiring and plumbing is in the walls. I had to take photos of my antique crystal chandelier before taking it apart to restore it. I too have an old home and we have done quite a lot without the aid of contractors. I enjoy your and Stephanie's channel. 👍 Your B roll footage with music is beautifully done!
I'm watching ris in December 2020---what a difference has been made! Congratulations.
I’m nearly tempted to go back and look at older videos to check out your hair. Plus 28 degrees isn’t a heat wave. 40 plus is in Au.
Mmmm!!! That is what I was going to say. It does not get quite as hot in NZ, but I remember 38° in Melbourne!!!🤣😂😥😂
Is 43 degrees and humid where I live so I just had to laugh 😆
I keep thinking "where will people sit if they visit?" and then I remember the whole chateau is an option :)
You’re amazing! What can’t you do? The workload doesn’t seem to phase you! You guys are doing an incredible job. I love watching!
Nice to see your grandparents home. It really is special and was obviously so for you. Family connections can make a huge difference for our emotional health. I think that’s why so many like watching your vlog and Stephanie’s. It’s nice to see. I ditched my cable quite a few years ago because the big thing to watch was a Real Housewives franchise which was just drama and ridiculous with meaningless fights and curated drama.
Your artwork is wonderful. I am hoping there will be prints to buy for my granddaughters room.
Perhaps two videos next week? Please, please! Enjoying them so much!
that beautiful organ player is definitely a main character
That was wonderful to take a look around your grand parents house. Happy Anniversary to them.
I am so looking forward to seeing the Gardeners Cottage come back to life....so very excited for you. Thank you for these lovely snippets of your life, i am humbled that you allow us youtube strangers in. Take Care.
24:07 it might help with the flow of the room to change the hinges to the other side of the door. You could probably get away with that change without too much hassle or new fittings.
Oh, I never saw blue willow Christmas pieces. What a treasure, for sure. And the Beatrix Potter drawing? Exquisite, Michael. Just darling. B. Potter was always a favorite author of mine as a child. I have a Peter Rabbit teapot...used to have much more but my daughter wasn't interested in my handing it down for future grandkids do like a cool, I got rid of a lot
Your families are certainly the "renovators adventurer's" 👏🤣😄🤣💕🇦🇺
Wow that B roll! Bought tears to my eyes, it is SO Beatrix Potter Michael, A dream come true for you ,well done you x
His videos are not complete without a B roll!!!!😂🤣
You could try "walking" the doors. I find that it helps with something that is too heavy to lift on your own. 🚪
I was just going to say that about the moai 🗿
Love your grandma dishes collections. You can inherit one day. Beautiful!
Michael, you make just beautiful videos. They are edited to perfection. I can't wait to see how this turns out.
Truly gifted artist!
Furniture dollies! They have wheels, and they will save your back. Get some.
I am obsessed with willow pattern. When we got married 3 years ago, we had afternoon tea and all the cake stands were willow pattern and all the centre pieces were willow pattern teapots filled with flowers. I have all my Nan's and Mum's willow pattern crockery.
I can't wait until the cottage is finished I'm waiting excitedly! I love watching you and Stephanie and both your shows! Love, from the United States of America, Oklahoma.
