New Orleans rapper Dee-1 explains purpose in music, message to Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Joe Budden & how his experiences have shaped his life path from the hood to Harvard.
David Augustine Jr., better known as rapper and cultural icon Dee-1, has a long list of accolades and honors next to his name. But on this episode of The Pivot, Dee goes in-depth with Ryan, Channing and Fred on his true purpose inside and outside of the Hip-Hop industry.
From being bullied in school to facing opposition still today, Dee-1 has learned how to look beyond his fears and realize the importance of his mission. From labels to fans to fellow artists, Dee has found his place as a realist when it comes to the rap game, and his music reflects his love of God and humanity.
Hailing from New Orleans, Dee speaks on the hardships he faced while in college at LSU, such as friends getting involved in drugs, getting cut from the basketball team and losing his longtime girlfriend. Despite this adversity, he gets emotional when touching on his biggest Pivot, a moment that has evidently shaped him still today where he escaped being killed by seconds. Dee-1 knows firsthand the influence that murder music and the glorification of violence can have on society, and his lyrics provide an alternative message.
He addresses the scrutiny and backlash from hip hop’s bigger names of Meek, Rick Ross and shares how he’s not worried about the Joe Budden’s of the world criticizing his approach because his message his far bigger than his ego and money.
As rappers and fans continue to compare wealth, status and fame, Dee-1 preaches about the core of what makes us all human. So while rap stars may have words for the Louisiana native, he continues to make an impact his own way, by approaching the Goliaths with love.
By understanding that God had more planned for him, Dee has gone on to teach at a middle school, become a Louisiana governor appointee and even write a children’s book. His eleventh album is a testimony to his journey, titled “From the Hood to Harvard.”
The Harvard University Nasir Jones Hip-Hop fellow keeps it real with the Pivot crew during this episode, pointing to difficult conversations as a solution to the difficult problems in today’s world.
New episodes drop on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. ET and Fridays at 3:30 p.m ET on KZhead, with audio available on all streaming platforms.

He created the opportunity for everyone in the industry that feels the same way to speak out. We need those voices to come to the forefront and speak loudly!

  • Ryan, Channing, and Fred, you guys did it again! A dope interview with a dope man! Dee-1 is a quintessential man who leaves an impressionable impact even through an interview. I’ve been a massive fan of Dee-1 for many years, and I’ve closely watched his career. It’s good to see a young OG getting his recognition and message to the masses and doing it “His Way.” The authenticity and rawness of this interview are precisely the messages we need to continue disseminating in the hip-hop culture. My suggestion is that The Pivot should do a sit-down between Dee-1, Jim Jones, Rick Ross, and Meek Mill. The sit down would consist of having a healthy conversation and discussing their slight differences. Also, the sit-down interview will commemorate the 50 years of Hip Hop. It would be an appealing sit-down to shed light on humanity, positivity, and progression. Overall, excellent interview.

  • First of all, I don’t want to understate how powerful D1’s testimony about the gun to his head encounter was. He told it in a way that made us visualize it, and he framed it in a way that delivered the intended impact of such an experience. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 But I would also like to add this: far too many people within the black community either have a similar experience, or have lost a loved one in a similar enough encounter. Why hasn’t our own encounters and experiences been enough for us as a collective unit to form the wave that he’s singlehandedly doing with his message DECADES ago? What will it take for us to swing the pendulum to a place where the D1s of the world are the norm??? Why have we been so complacent (and by consequence, complicit) in this? I stand with D1 and the wave he’s building. Keep slaying these Goliaths! Much love. 💞

  • Man I'm both proud of and am appreciative of Dee-1. I wasn't very much (sonically) drawn to his music, but still like some of it. However, i've been following him every since I discovered CHH because I was always drawn to the message(s). He isn't just about styling for Christ or I love Jesus stuff but he also touches on real like black issues. A lot of Christian artists dont. He's also bold in Christ. Being from the hood having so many dead friends who died at the hands of each other and dealers, addicts, prostitutes, etc., as well as being influenced by the music at times as I practically raised myself due to an overworked mother.....I truly appreciate it. Like it really does my heart good that he's putting a dent into the culture.

  • One of my favorite episodes, hands down. One thing for sure and two things for certain, Dee-1's light is clear as day. You can clearly see it. I am glad that Ryan took the time at the end to explain his position and purpose. At times in the interview it felt as if the interviewing cast was in opposition of the brother. Their energy was off. Amazing work though and Ryan, Channing, and Fred are like extended family. Its a connection that cannot be explained but we all family! 😂

  • Let me say, I truly appreciate this interview! The tears I cried watching this hit me different after going to multiple funerals of young people due to violence. Dee-1, this was an on time word. I recently lost a love one (25 years old) to gun violence. It was traumatic and horrific. There is a spirit of narcissism and carelessness for life that has saturated our culture. Dee keep speaking and teaching the message of music accountability. I hear, support, and salute you Sir!

Thanks Pivot for having him on the show. He is definitely what hip hop and many communities need. By far one of my favorite episodes.

  • Outstanding show. I have been a DEE-1 fan for years. I am a Christian that is a hip hop head and when I was introduced to Christian rap music it blessed me. It blessed me because I could not reconcile listening to murder music that glorified sex, drugs and violence while being a new creature in Christ and living as such. Thank you guys for still being you and asking thoughtful questions and thank you for this episode of the Pivot!

Blessing, brother, and keep up the excellent work for JESUS' name. Amen. Dee 1 - Only God can Judge me track, I remember I bumped a birthday event in between set, and people will impress with his music and message.

  • Rap can stay with hot beats, lyricism, hitting melodies AND bravado. The bravado is a part of hip hop and Black culture, but killing and drugs IS NOT a necessary part of bravado. Fans love the bravado and would not even notice or miss omission of killing and drugs. Trust me. It can be done. MANY ARTISTS have done this.

  • Thank you 4 hvn Dee-1 on Pivot! I was born & raised in L.A., CA aka Hollywood & was educated at UCLA Entertainment Studies Program. I made rap music from 1999-2009 (til I had my 1st child) & can say he is 💯 percent 💪 right on point about "air thang". And I am so proud to see him stand up for the vulnerable youth & new generation who don't know that some of these record labels also own private prisons & big pharma companies. They are manufacturing & programming our children with their "delicious poison" music 🎵🎶 to be guests in their for profit prisons. Enough is enough in 2024-2030+. Let's take a stand and create a better world 🌎 for our kids & future grandkids 💗. Lord knows after 50 years of training them to "act bad" that we all need 2b held accountable for letting it go for THIS long. Diddy, Jay-Z, Rick Ross & whoever else needs to get in line or we gotta put these big corporations on a chain.
