Raccoon mom and 3 babies

I was sitting here on my computer with the door open on this muggy night when I noticed movement by my door. These four characters where sticking their head in and then went to pick raspberries from our bushes. I don't feed raccoons but this female seemed a bit underweight by their usually standards.
Raccoon facts:
After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young, known as "kits", are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersal in late fall. Although captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years, depending on the local conditions in terms of traffic volume, hunting, and weather severity.
The most important sense for the raccoon is its sense of touch. Almost two-thirds of the area responsible for sensory perception in the raccoon's cerebral cortex is specialized for the interpretation of tactile impulses, more than in any other studied animal. With their broad auditory range, they can perceive tones up to 50-85 kHz as well as quiet noises, like those produced by earthworms underground.
They often pick up food with their front paws to examine it and rub the item giving the appearance of "washing" the food. Due to its adaptability, the raccoon has been able to use urban areas as a habitat.

  • Years ago I lived in the Boston suburbs near a lake. Raccoons were no strangers. One night I saw a raccoon and a cat "together" raiding garbage cans in my back yard. I was thinking no way these two are working together. A week later.......I saw same cat and I assume same raccoon doing the exact same thing in my back yard.

  • I have a family of Racoons here outside my home in Northern California. They arrived after a big fire last july. A Mother and 3 offspring. The offspring were basically newborn and rode around on the mothers back when I first seen them. She had been getting into my trash making a huge mess looking for food. I began feeding them due to being tired of cleaning up the mess and feeling bad that the woods they called home had been burnt up. The offspring are now as big as the mother and every morning they wait for me on my deck knowing I will soon come outside with their food . They have become quite tame and I doubt they ever leave my property. Ive been working in my garage on my HotRod and noticed I had a audience a couple times. They stroll in watch me for a few minutes and then stroll out again. In the evening they will climb up on my patio table and sit patiently looking through the big window . When they see me walk by or sitting in my recliner they will stand and peer through the window at me just watching what I am doing. One evening in late October I was heading out to my pickup when the Racoons met me at my front door and were acting very weird and trying to get into my house . It was the first time they had ever got close enough to touch me or made a attempt to come inside. As I was trying to block their entry and pull the door closed without closing it on one of them I noticed why they had become so cozy all of a sudden.....On my front lawn and less then 50 ft from me a large male Mountain Lion had appeared from behind my large oak tree . A few moments later as the Racoons huddled together in a corner of my laundry room a friend of mine " Remington " chose to run the Cougar off the property. Unfortunately the Cougar chose to take a very aggressive posture with " Remington " and I after I fired 2 shells into the air hoping to run the beautiful fellow off without any harm coming to any of us and I was forced to defend myself with shell fired into the cougar head and chest while he was mid leap 6ft off the ground and less then then 6 inches away from the business end of " Remington " . A shame It forced me to defend myself and wasnt scared off by the prior 2 warning shots.

  • I had a,friend who lived in a trailer near a wooded area, two little raccoons would come by and we started feeding them first throwing the food their way, after a month or two, they would come up to us and take it from our hands. they were so cute and would come to the door and stand up and when we asked, "what do you want?" they would turn their heads to the kitchen knowing that that was where their food came from. Occasionally there was an opposum that would visit also, and he was docile as well...I wonder what happened to them, I have pics that I look at sometimes and miss them

And, I love the track of music you selected for this one ~ it really fits nicely, my friend! Wonderful share Rob! Really enjoyed it this morning ~ Specially since I didn't have to go out back in the heat & humidity here to do that! Have a great weekend! Blessings to you & yours! ~D ~:)

    • I was tentative too Donna :) This was a strange raccoon and there's been a couple of reported raccoon attacks lately, but in both those cases people were walking their dog. I like this simple little track - it's called "Bettina" by Daniel Lanois from the Sling Blade soundtrack. I reckon them raccoons love them some French fried potaters, mmm hmm. Hope you and Dan have a relaxing weekend.

    • mergingbutterfly Raccoons are all right as long as you don't corner them or try to get too close too suddenly. I live in an old farm house complete with a barn next door where a family of raccoons lives. No one else is using it, so why shouldn't they? I put food and water out for them and they are impeccably behaved. If I didn't see them I'd have no idea they were around.

    • Well they are wild animals who survive based on instincts, including to avoid other predators. The biggest predator on the planet is a human so, yeah, they will fight a human if we are posing a threat to them or their children.

    • Sometimes when they get old they can be temperamental, but otherwise if they are not cornered and don't feel threatened they are very sweet creatures, very playful and curious. I had a couple when I was younger one of them would walk with me to a pond and I would give him raw eggs he would wash them off in the pond then eat them he would crack a hole in them and drink them right out of the shell. I miss them.
