  • The creature is one of fear, pain, cowardice. It only kills one at a time, it separates the group to weaken it and never faces them when they are together, it itself is afraid. In the end when he roars back it backs up, it knows that it can die and maybe its not as powerful as it makes others believe, it is fear, a representation of trauma, pain, and cowardice, when faced it knows it cannot stand against the strong, those willing to fight.

And if you look carefully at that family picture, the daughter looks ill at ease and is standing away from her family like something wasn't right. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I thought that's what they were hinting at.

  • I always found it interesting that the monster appeared as Dom's wife before he died. Was it to put his mind at ease that way he would be a more willing sacrifice? Was it to lure him into a false sense of security and then shock him with the monsters true form in order to create that fear for it to be necessary to sacrifice him? These are the questions I still have for the movie. I still love the hell out of it. It's one of my favorite horror movies for sure

    @riakun@riakun3 жыл бұрын
    • If the god had done that to ease Dom’s mind, it would not have switched back to its true form once Dom felt safe. It wanted him to suffer.

    • I think it's not the creatures that chooses what you see, it's your mind tha chooses it. That's why the villegers always bow down and never look at it directly. Looking at it makes your mind see anything but the creature and you go insane.

      @tavirosu25@tavirosu252 жыл бұрын
    • @@tavirosu25 that makes sense, but does it have to appear as something to lure in a person to be sacrificed (like an angular fish with it's light to lure in prey) or does it need that fear to make the sacrifice? Why did it take a different form (even if it's in their mind)? It seems the guy saw the *actual* creature before it took him away and impaled him on a tree. I'm just curious *why* and if it's necessary?

      @riakun@riakun2 жыл бұрын
    • @@riakun I assume you see the real creature just before you die, after you re-experience all the guilt/shame/pain. So maybe the main guy was spared to be the last because he had the biggest trauma, while the rest of his friends didn't had that much trauma so they could be killed before him.

  • I really love the crossover between Dom telling Luke off for not fighting back while his friend dies, and Dom just hiding in the tress, while Phil dies. Its like it shows him as both a hypocrite and also a normal person - freezing up and not able to fight back against something that is about to kill your friend. I thought that that's why Dom kinda gets on with Luke in the last part, as he can kinda understand why Luke did what he did, and why Luke couldn't have realistically done anything else.

  • I think Moder's reasoning behind choosing each victim was not so much the pain they endured but rather their response to it. For the whole film, Luke had to deal with the subtle truth that he had a role in his friend's death, and the creature saw this "weakness" as a desirable quality in a follower. In fact, that's what it saw in all its followers. Note how the woman who speaks to Luke, after he undoes his restraints, says "we worship it", dodging the question of whether or not she's afraid of it. That's all Moder wanted: submission, and would extend their lives as a "gift". But that's the real question of this movie: is it better to live kneeling or die standing?

  • I want to start a conversation discussing, why he’s (not) responsible for his friends death. My personal opinion is, that it’s in no way his fault, because if he would’ve done something, he probably would’ve been killed as well. Also he couldn’t have known about the robbers. But let me know your opinion, because I’m really interested:).

    • Plus the guy could of just given up his ring. No possession is worth your life. All sentimental value is lost if your dead. Oddly enough robbers weigh out the risk. They get caught robbing, burglary charge and assault with a deadly weapon-jail time with possibility of parole. Murder is a whole different story, you get detectives looking for you-increasing your chance of getting caught and if you get a homicide charge then you are looking at hard time on top of the other charges I mentioned which also reduces chance of parole. They would have to get hella lucky with a judge to get any sort of deal. Therefore if he would of did as they said, they more than likely would of not killed him just like the cashier.

We were going to our destination and the map told us to do a full round circle and avoid the woods. Guess what? we went straight to the woods thinking it was a shortcut and it would've made our journey easier. It was like 3pm we predicted that it would slice our journey up, originally if we took the right path and followed the map it would've been 5-6 hours of hiking. Our compass was pointing the right direction and that's what we thought, it's 7pm already quite starting to get really dark and we weren't even close to reaching the other side. It was freezing cold and we were tired. We gave up and decided to call it a day, we sat there and got our tents set up with the fire. It was dead quiet there and we literally were paranoid af when we started hearing wood branches falling of trees and noises there. I got no sleep there and was scared to the ground lmao, we both packed our stuff and left at 5am when we saw the sun, after an 2 hrs of hiking we finally got out of the woods. Literally one of the scariest experience i've ever done.

  • I watched this film back when Netflix first released it on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Part of why I enjoyed it was its skilled use of atmosphere to create unease and tension rather then blatantly throwing stuff at viewers in the form of a steady parade of gruesome imagery and the cheap jump scares that so many horror flicks have been doubling down on lately. This film went back to the basics of using the viewer's own imagination against them (at least those of us who are willing to let it do so). Its no secret that if one sets the right tone, a forest can go from being being a calm, beautiful and earthly to sinister, foreboding and generally unsettling without much fanfare, The Blair Witch Project of course showed this approach was viable years ago and honestly I never thought anyone else would pull it off as well again but this movie showed me that some directors still know how do it. The monster being cool in design and the bit of lore we get to learn about it via the movie was just an added bonus for me at that point.

Like this guy. I'm sure his friends' families aren't going to buy his story when their loved ones never come back from their camping trip with him, and that forest is going to be flooded with police and searchers who'll either be killed or who'll find all those corpses in the trees and blame him for them. I'm not even joking, imagining the obvious consequences really is my favorite part of horror movies.

That's why the cult is made of non-combatants, like the sickly and the elderly, women and children. Hel herself was described as a woman who looked half-normal and half-corpse, I think this film's take on that is pretty damn cool, the monster is literally made of corpses so you could say there are parts that look normal! Anyway, Luke had a chance to die fighting but chickened out, from then on he belonged to Hel. I guess he got a second chance at the end because he found his courage and fought back, unlike the cultists who allow themselves to be killed without much resistance.

    • I doubt it’s the daughter. Remember, the monster only picks those who are going through an immense amount of emotional pain. Little kids usually dont go through that, especially if they are from a normal family where the parents clearly love them enough to take them camping. Im assuming it was the mother, but she didnt age due to the monsters ability to cease the aging process for his followers.

The creature didn’t “let” him leave the woods at all either. He made to the edge of the woods, which seemed to me like the boundary of its domain and it physically couldn’t cross. Also Luke didn’t “reactively” set those mostly dead people on fire. It was absolutely deliberate, Dom even told him to leave the place burning when he escaped.

  • "The blond woman" is Anna, the mother in the picture in the wallet that they find under the old tent from 1984. Also, I didn't get the feeling that the Jotunn _let Luke go,_ but rather it was at the limit of its boundaries and could not leave the forest into the open. Hence why it screams in anger, and Luke screams back in victory. This makes the ending where Luke is transformed by having faced his fear and overcome it...not simply because the Jotunn gave him a pass. Like Anna said, either worship it or die. The Jotunn would have killed Luke at that point but it was physically incapable of going any farther.

The girl knew real pain because the family didn't love her like they did her brother. You can safely assume this based on the family hugging tightly and smiling in the photo while she was off to the side and frowning.

    @guvnoir23@guvnoir234 жыл бұрын
    • Right? I mean, okay, they said the trail they were following wasn't used much, but even so, the forest would be even less likely to have anyone who could help wandering by, and if anyone comes looking for them (like say someone from the hotel, where they presumably made reservations, who might know that they were hiking in and might send Search & Rescue when they don't turn up on time), they would be easy to find on the open trail where they're expected to be, and next to impossible to find somewhere in the depths of that forest, even without taking cultists and Jotunns into account. I was yelling at them to just make a travois and then go back to the trail, myself. But then, I grew up in a very similar wilderness in Canada.
