  • Hi Everybody. They got salt licks in their forest. The Moose was abandoned from his mother from the day he was born. So this guy took care of him. So he sees him as his mother, thats why he licks him, he doesnt lick other humans, the other moose dont lick any human. Its not a salt lick thing, its a mother and baby thing 😊

    • Lets think about this differently. You raise an animal, it is used to you. You put some food in your hand and hold it out, the animal eats from your hand. Someone else the animal doesn't know tries this, and the animal doesn't eat out of the hand. Does that mean that eating is how the animal shows affection? It shows that the animal is comfortable with the person that raised it, and feels safe eating from his/her hand. It is a show of affection in the sense of feeling safe, but the actual act of eating isn't a show of affection. The same goes for licking, the moose is driven to lick salt and minerals, they are extremely vital for all large animals, but the moose isn't going to just lick random people for that salt.. it needs to be comfortable first. So, yes, the licking does show that the moose is very trusting of this person, and some temporary licking is part of the process of "making friends" at least in deer, but the amount of licking going on here is really for nutrition. We have to look at ALL of the animals behavior when deciding it's emotional state, and not just one behavior. Having a salt lick also wont stop it, moose, deer, cow, etc are naturally wired to seek out salt, and even if they have blocks of salt, they will still lick another available source. Now for a random relevant fact that may save your life one day...a moose standing and staring you down while licking its lips is generally a sign of aggression and a precursor to charging...they sometimes clack their teeth also, this only applies when the moose is staring at you and licking it's lips.. not licking other things. Spent 15+ winters in North woods of Michigan peninsula & volunteered with DNR for counting & tagging deer & moose before & after hunting season. Not an expert in ungulates, but did learn a lot more than the average person.

    • Not necessarily. I lived in Pinedale WY and the moose there are all over the place. But because they feel safe in that area from human predators, they are very peaceful and even friendly. There's a woman who lives in Big Piney, I believe...or Daniel... Who has had wild moose in her yard for years. Her cats lay on them. Very friendly. One is, or was, named Old One Eye. Her photos were eventually put on postcards. This is any animal behavior when they do not feel threatened by US with weapons or other human behaviors that threaten them. (I see that he responded with a yes.) Still...

    • Humans are animals. Nothing unexpected about it at all. Homo Sapiens is not that different from other animals. Though there seems to be a tendency and ambition among them to assume that they are so special in every way. And still they also prefer to think about their pets using very human centered terminology about emotion and needs. Well, we are what we are and taking any other point of view from outside ourselves is very challenging. Perhaps not even possible for us.

I teach my kids that the only time you EVER kill an animal is when you intend to eat it. Through hunting, I have been able to provide food for my family and many others. That is life altering for them. Hunting is a natural part of the circle of life and NECESSARY for animal survival.

    • @@tod5098 Tell that to people that live where there are resident moose . Female moose with a calf , very dangerous . Bull moose in the rut can be very dangerous . They can kick with any leg , easily kill a wolf or human .

  • HI! :) I just discovered your GREAT channel & have SUBSCRIBED :) from Saskatchewan, Canada :) ....My great-grandparents came from Sweden, in approx the mid 1800's, from Gutenberg. Many of them had the last name Berntsen (that was later changed to Benson)..... We have quite a few moose here, but NOT AS FRIENDLY AS YOURS!!! IF I could afford it - I'd love to get over to Sweden & England, for a good trip...... ....'Dow Benson' :) TAKE CARE! :)
