Locks, Locks & More Locks on the Tenn-Tom Waterway | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 30
At this point, we’re about halfway into our river journey from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve transited several locks thus far, but no other part of the route has as many locks as Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
It’s one lock right after another on the Tenn-Tom. Some are more memorable that others, making weird squeaks and screeches we’re not used to. We transit the tallest lock on our entire route, Jamie Whitten Lock (84’), where water spews from the sides of small doors in the lock wall, unnerving us both.
All in all, we get another couple hundred miles closer to saltwater by the end of this episode - with only about 400 more to go!

You two not only love each other but you like each other and that is rare.
You will find, that as you get older and more experienced, you guys will remember the stupid things....The big blunders stick with you the longest and your having to think the problems through is priceless. You could not have bought those memories. You have to live through them...
Watched while working from home. Dreaming of the life to come. Thanks
Dropping the hook is always more pleasurable to me than tying up in a marina. Nothing better than sitting out on the deck first thing in the morning and enjoying that first cup of coffee with just the sounds of the wild around you.
Just LOVE you guys ! you are so lucky with 1 in snow , here in Grand Marais Minnesota it's -10 with about 50 inch snow on the ground . Feb 24 .SAFE trip !
YOU GUYS PASSED BY MY HOME LOCK!! And my small hang out the mermaid marina and pickwick dam. Little inside tip one of the houses you passed is now fallen off the cliff into the water, he is a family friend of mine. Glad to see you guys like the sights and lock. For sure have a new subscriber
Great video. Watching the footage reminded me of my epic 180 lock transit from the English Channel (beginning at Le Havre) down to the Mediterranean Sea, back in 1988 with my girlfriend. We did it in 3 weeks and went through Paris, which was epic. Many small manual locks but also a few huge ones like the Jamie Whitten lock you guys transited.
Very cool!
I started watching your later eps. and then chose to go back and watch the beginning of your journey as well. Nice to follow your tour down river here, and the slowly changing nature, industry, locks and sorroundings. You have captured it , and convey the atmosphere authentically. Your filming and editing keeps improving at this stage, and I enjoy your tempered use of drone footage and choice of music.
Appreciate it, thank you!
For all of us landlocked dreamers of the never-ending horizon, thank you for letting us come along on your journey!
I love her sense of humor. "Where did you get that hair cut?" And his humor blend together perfectly. You guys are lucky to have each other on such an adventure. Don't ever take what you have for granted. Thanks for sharing.
Love your videos. It’s awesome to see you guys traveling down a river. And I’m so excited for you to get to the golf of Mexico and beyond. I wish you Could put out one video a week. You guys are doing great though I’m so happy for you
Thank you Tom Goodguy!
I'm from that area. I use to work on those locks, for 20 years I stayed between the Tennessee River and all the way south till you reach the Alabama side of the Tenn-Tom again. But it is a beautiful sight. The ugly muddy places are were the old river runs enter the Tenn-Tom and distorts the waters visibility. Enjoyed your video
You gotta love those big motor ass boats. They hall bass.
I was in 1985 the first sailboat, called Flyaway, to go north from Gulf of Mexico to Pickwick Lake, thence on to Knoxville. Never remembered any plants floating in locks either. Was surprised to see first lock was renamed from Bay Springs Dam. It was a leaker even when it was new lol! Safe journeys to both of you.
I crossed over the Tombigbee waterway on a bicycle on the Natchez Trace. A friend and I were riding from Loveless Cafe to Natchez, MS on bikes (444 miles). I didn't know the Tombigbee went to Mobile until watching your video
Little doors in Whitten Lock is load cells. Controls the stress of the lock walls
Nice Mermaid Marina I grew up round there now live in San Diego will be on the ocean with you in a year and a half thanks for the walk down memory lane on the Tennessee River Safe Travels you’re doing a great job. And Pickwick is better I agree
Lauren really enjoyed the Captain title...-))
2:21 A river house built almost entirely out of storage containers. That would be very interesting to explore.
Hello Sailing Soulianis. Just catching up on the pass videos . Your sailboat was the must high end Dollars Bassboat on the river but the slowest.lol As I watch your trip I about pee myself wow you guys went though a lot. Can’t sleep 6:00am Ohio time . To much loving your trip.
12:55 Best thing i have heard on the internet in a long time. I'm 50, that is so well said about life.
Your episodes keep getting better and better! This one kinda made me realize that even tho you two have to bundle up and deal with colder than ideal temps, you really picked the best time to leave the great lakes because the fall colors and morning fog on the water are really beautiful! Thanks for freezing your @$$es off so we could see this! 😉😁😁
Haha, you’re quite welcome.
One thing That I don't like about your channel: Each week doesn't come fast enough. I really like your work here. The trip from the lakes has been fascinating. I'm hooked.
Patent that cool poncho style , laundry drying clips “zip system”, keep-warm robe, quick ! 😄😄😄. Yet another simply beautiful river trip you took us on this time , thank you!
@ 9:14...I think I saw a similar facial expressions at a bar once...she was neither amused nor impressed. Perfect.
My boat is on the Tennessee River, Lake Guntersville, a big change from thirty five years on Tampa Bay, but as your video shows the views can be amazing.
Have always had a love for sailing. Have never sailed but a week ago I saw a 30ft for sale and it all of a sudden got me interested again. Started doing research and watching videos and that's how I found y'all. And now I'm following along patiently awaiting your next video. I live on the Texas Oklahoma border so my plan is to save up and buy a 30 or so foot and live on it while it's on a trailer and pull it down to the coast and travel wherever I want after that. Y'all's videos has got me stoked about what the future can hold. Have fun and stay safe.
Great to see you. I did well this week, I only checked twice in case you posted early. Does it surprise you how many people not only take an interest in your journey, but also comment. You are letting us join a very special personal voyage. Thank you very much.
It is quite surprising! But it's very cool. It is exactly why we wanted to do this.
Nice to be able to travel with you, I am a fan.
I'm glad you've documented your time on the lakes and now going down the river. There are a million "sailing in the Caribbean" videos, but you've let me see America from a new angle. I had no idea there were so many navigable rivers in the US.
Great fishing in Pick Wick Lake.
GREAT JOB 👏👏👏👏👏
another great video looks so peaceful
Great video, beautiful editing. I was laughing at all the weird creaking and shrieking noises at the lock. Unique experience among the sailing channels, and a joy to watch.
I've watched several of your videos and they have all been pretty awesome. You two are doing what many can only dream about, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Mike!
One of the best "Sailing" episodes out here to date. Nicely done guys. Enjoying your journey!
When you are progresing slow you let your soul come along, and this is exactly why we sail, to allow your soul to travel with you
Very beautiful
Yours and Erik Aandreaa videos are the best sailing clips on KZhead 👍thanks for sharing
Yay! New episode!
Y'all's videos are awesome, I've lived on Pickwick lake my whole life (35 years) and it's great to see it from your perspective, I forget how beautiful it really is, if I had known y'all were here I would've invited y'all to Thanksgiving dinner with my Family, be safe and happy travels!!!
Thank you for sharing your journey. You Kids did an outstanding job on this film.
Thanks for posting. My bride's favorite part of cruising was waking up to a whole new scene! Mine was that she felt safe and refreshed. s/v good karma
Wow, that was quite a few locks you had to go through but like you said, each new area presented new scenery and that's pretty cool. I am so happy for you two, with the calm weather you were given. It looks really peaceful and serene most of the time. Great video, thank you.
Nice thanks for sharing!
hope you are OK I know weather through that area has not been great. Gods speed
a joy to watch you guys progressing towards the gulf.
That is so cool!
All of your videos since you entered Ky lake bring back strong vivid memories. I kept my boat at Green Turtle Bay Marina for 4 years and then took the route you took to Mobile Bay.... When I went through the Pickwick lock it was a harrowing experince for me we were out of place and all the water surging up underneath the boat pushed us into the wall... similar your experince in Ky damn lock. The operator at pick wick told me that if I had gone all the way up I would have been fine, he can adjust water flow lol... which he did when he relized we were having a hard time. After that I bought to very large ball shaped fenders that kept us off the wall life was much easier after that. Thanks for the memories enjoy your sailing.
Wow, good job!
Your passing through some beautiful areas.
Lovely storytelling for what could have been a flat episode, well done, thanks
Like your channel. FYI when replacing water hoses on a sailboat. Two clamps in opposite directions are required. Don’t want it to disengage in rough sailing and flood the boat.
Really enjoying your journey. So different than all the Bahamas, Caribbean, South Pacific vids out there. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next episode. Dave from Boston.
Such a beautiful episode! Thank you so much. So glad I found your adventures... they've made me appreciate this lovely country more and more.
Haunted and spooky too.
Y'all knocked it out of the park again. I feel so relaxed after watching one of your videos.
I really like the commentary on how the scenery changes. Well said!
It continues to look like a really nice trip but I can't help but to think that you will really be glad to get to the Gulf and points south! Thanks for the great videos.
Starting this route next year. Would like to hear more about where you stayed overnight.
Enjoy it
This is wicked cool
What a nice adventure through the rivers and states. You both have seen aspects of the country that most people miss. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video as always ...thanks
Just finished my Trig test. Your video style is so relaxing and my brain no longer hurts. Thank you. ;)
Nice videos for this series. I'd make a few suggestions: Overview of the route traveled. I saw the map on the first part of the first video but an update so a viewer could relate to position would be cool. If you navigated from the Ohio R to the Tennessee R and downbound to the Tombigbee, you locked through the Wilson lock, highest vertical drop of any lock in the world. Should point that one out. A mystery: why do you tie up on the bollards Port side, away from the forward lock doors when heading downbound? Most craft tie up Starboard and closer to the downbound lock doors.
Your thoughts on the slow change of the landscape around were very philosophical and touched me. I sometimes experience the same but your words described the feeling better than anything I came up with in my mind at the time. Thanks 🙏
Most excellent!, so glad you're in sunny Florida and warmer temps...... finally!
3rd or4th time I have watched this..just great..my wife, Carol, has proclaimed ...you have a computer/video friend for life ....... take care
Pickwick was a smoother lift because the lock has a more refined/modern multi port filling and emptying system refined by TVA in the 70’s. In contrast, KY Lock has a 1930’s side port system that is a lot more turbulent and not as efficient.
That was an amazing episode. You're cruising right down through my old stomping grounds. The interesting thing as I listened to your description of the "ugly" and "beautiful" I realized how you're seeing some of the poorest and richest areas of that end of the country.
G'day Kirk & Lauren, really enjoying your journey down the inland waterways, such beautiful vistas with all the autumn colours, refreshing change, plenty of time for all the Bahamian stuff later. Cheers from OZ 👍👍
Life has been tough for me lately your video was AW inspiring. Thanks!
Happy Valentines Day to you both! I’m enjoying it vicariously through your video.
Pleasantly surprised at all the nice properties along the various lakes and rivers
You both are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your journey and safe travels
Perfect timing for peak colors!
Your music, editing, time laps and overall content is absolutely fantastic!
Thank you Ed!
cool. good to see home again. pickwick was my playground for the first 20 years of my life. lots of friends fathers who were dozer and excavator operators went to work on the tenn tom cut when i was kid. huge undertaking. made for awesome water skiing early morning and late evening in the summer.
Absolutely beautiful video, you guys are killin it! I'm truly loving your adventure...
Great video guys
That looks like a trip of a lifetime, with beautiful fall colors!
You have captured such a beautiful time of year to do this transit. The footage in this video is beautiful and I really enjoyed the music. Thank you :)
The purpose of the horn is to warn people downstream that a bunch of water is about to be dumped.
Siren= warns that water is being sucked or dumped. Horn= safe to let loose your securing lines and exit lock.
@@justinroberts9652 this is correct. I work where we push barges thru these locks.
You guys are such a cute couple. Love your videos!
Wow, amazing scenery and fantastic water ways through America. Nice Video. Thanks for sharing.
happy valentines to the both of you ..... your a beautiful couple
I worked on the Bay Springs lock when I was in my 20’s.
Nice series! You have renewed our interest on completing the Great Loop. We had always thought the Great Lakes to the Gulf would be boring. But you guys changed our opinion. Thanks John and Miri on M.V. VENTURE
You guys are really getting good at passing through locks!
one of my favorite transits was down the ditch. did it in October/November. colder than id expected but still very beautiful. keep watch for the barges during early fog. sure will wake you up on an early morning passage.
You may not know this since you live in Arctic conditions, but you are going to fry in the southern sun without a bimini. Hope getting one made when you get there is on the to do list.
We know it. The Bimini is a long saga of which we will start to share the beginnings of shortly.
I'm starting to feel guilty not paying for this content. It really is superb.
How cool!!! I used to live in Michigan City Indiana and have walked past that very boat several times at Washington park marina! Small world!! Great video!!
Grew up going to Pickwick, and my wife and I had our wedding there.
I was a couple weeks behind you traveling on this very section of river on our way to Florida. We didn't have as nice of weather as you. I loved recognizing all the landmarks in your video and can't wait to reminisce to the next video. Great job on vids!
Hi Guys, great trip to see the big rivers and awome countryside, beautifull place. The Locks look as big as the Pannama Canal, nothing like the Leeds Liverpool, longest canal in the UK. Flown south from Chicago a few times, pity many travelers dont realize what you miss from a plane. i now live near Alicante, big Marina, and base for the Volvo Ocean race, those boats look like big surfboards, but they all have the amazing adjustable keels, nothing to look at in the way of staterooms. The music is very well balanced, did you inspire the muscisians, or is it the other way around. Best of luck with all you do. Chris
Hi Lauren & Kirk! Happy Valentine's Day! I'm hoping in real time you've reunited with your mast & sails - they've missed you! :¬) Positive vibes to you!
You guys are living the dream.
💖🌹⛵️ I love your day to day Adventure ⛵️🌹💖
