Bruce dern is really good at playing a weasel.
He is. But it's good to see him in sympathetic roles as well. I recall that the camera loved in "Silent Running." He was still kind of an odd character, but he worked it into something credible. Remember for context that this was the period in which "Zabriskie Point" was made.

As a boy growing up in the 60's I surly didn't like Bruce Dern. Every movie, pure mean. That's how good he was as an actor. He stands out as the best bad guy (realistically) I remember.
I heard a story about Bruce Dern giving interviews later in his acting career and he said he received hate mail (actual post office letters) for years and years after killing John Wayne in The Cowboys. That was his most infamous part. But I always notice him in many other films too.
He's doing better now, having his way with the Manson chicks.
I think when an actor does he's job so well that people hate him for a role he played in the actor has done an extraordinary job but being the character to the T
