  • The main cause of the disaster was the decision to change the match commander 3 weeks before the game from someone who knew what he was doing to someone who hadn't even been there for over 10 years. If they hadn't done that the gate wouldn't have needed to be opened because filtering of tickets and queuing would have happened as per the previous year.

    • No. Tragedy happens in a perfect storm. The conditions had been building up to this. Treating people like cattle had been putting ever more dangerous obstacles up. If it didn't happen at Hillsborough it would have happened somewhere else. The cop in charge made 1 fatal mistake which not in a perfect storm he could have got away with. Everyone makes mistakes. The original fault lay in treating people like cattle. The subsequent fault lay in trying to cover it up. Which that cop never did. Only those above him. And as for The Sun, well that was just pure evil. Evil exists in our soceity if we let it.

      @sjdover69@sjdover694 жыл бұрын
    • Simon Dover the only reason conditions were the way they were was down to hooliganism. Pens were introduced in the late 70’s because of the problems we had in the early and mid 70’s. In fact fences were introduced at the Leppings Lane end for the 77 cup semi final between Manchester United and Leeds. No other reason for them. And one of the main reasons for the disaster was the police viewing the Liverpool fans through the lens of hooliganism. That’s why they didn’t act immediately when people were getting crushed in pens 3 and 4. They thought it was a pitch invasion.

      @mrkipling2201@mrkipling22014 жыл бұрын
    • @@mrkipling2201 Yep. Agree completely. But that makes my point, no matter the reason, treating people as less than human ends in disaster.

      @sjdover69@sjdover694 жыл бұрын
    • But it was also my point that the fatal decision made on that day was never proved to have come from a bad place. Indeed it appears the person responsible bitterly regretted it. Approx. 10 mins elapsed when everyone thought nothing abnormal was happening given the normal behaviour of football fans. Around 2 mins of misunderstanding when mistakes where made by everyone except the Liverpool fans. Then everyone behaved well. Mistakes happen. He admitted it was a mistake. The two main problems were authorities in committees treating people like cattle, and the cover up / smear.

      @sjdover69@sjdover694 жыл бұрын
    • Simon Dover definitely. As football fans, we were appallingly treated at games in the 80’s. We didn’t know any different though.

  • I do not have the words to express my sadness, awe and respect for all the Liverpool families affected by this. And those that fought so hard for justice should be honoured. Yet it seems that the honours go out to the criminals in suits and robes, all snuggling up together on their corrupt self adorned pedestals. I was struck when watching and reading about this how there were similarities to the cover up around my grt grandfathers death (along with 1197 others): Families waiting desperately at Lime Street station, statements written by the authorities, witnesses called only if they would say what the authorities wanted them to and the victims being blamed. That was the Lusitania Disaster, referred to by Lord Mersey (who clearly had some integrity as he waived his fee and resigned his post as wreck commissioner afterwards) calling it 'A dam dirty business'. Churchill, the so-called war hero, had a lot to answer for in that, but never did of-course. Thank you Liverpool families ~ you have done humanity an incredible justice in your own search for justice but showing the truth of the corrupt establishment to the world.

    • Being a Liverpool fan and watched the disaster live here in Ireland, the chief of police there I found out from watching other doc on you tube had only been employed there 3 weeks earlier. In my opinion due to this fact it seems like lack of experience on his behalf lead to utter negligence on the day. The fact he didnt have expierence why the police made up stories to cover his ass in my opinion.

      @davidmackeown297@davidmackeown2975 жыл бұрын
    • David Mackeown I agree. He had no idea what he was doing and had no experience whatsoever. Which was appalling considering all those policemen out there were looking to them for what to do and when. I know absolutely nothing about the logistics of operations such as this and I was only young when this happened. Indeed I was of a generation that grew up genuinely believing the stories and that it was all caused by the fans and their behaviour that day. But even knowing as little as I do I just can’t get my brain around watching those packed out pens and watching yet more pour through that tunnel without thinking ok that’s enough in there. Let’s fill the near empty pens now and shut off the tunnel !

      @loulou7963@loulou79635 жыл бұрын
    • Solid as rocks I agree. People do freeze. It’s human. You freeze and become like a rabbit in the headlights. But as you say a man in his position should have put the groundwork in and visited the ground etc. He should definitely have been aware of the problems in previous years and the danger areas etc. And maybe he should have been advised better too. Those police officers out there on the frontline totally relied on their superiors for their orders and they got nothing. I was going to say, didn’t the ground have any responsibility for health and safety ? No stewards to guide fans ?

      @loulou7963@loulou79635 жыл бұрын
    • Solid as rocks everything you say makes perfect sense to me. It comes down to the same thing doesn’t it ? Money and the fact they didn’t want to spend it to improve safety. Sadly it seems that it always takes a major loss of life before anything is done. The same as the ferry disaster a few years before. The 80s seem full of horrific things like this. I was only a young girl at the time of hillsborough but I grew up with the version of lies that were fed by the gutter press. Can I ask were you at hillsborough yourself ?

  • The first time I learned anything about Hillsborough was when I watched the 20th anniversary commemorations on sky sports news, as a 13 year old girl ill off school. I remember, and still vividly recall the goosebumps I felt, as well as the anger and sense of injustice felt by the many hundreds, and probably thousands who chanted "Justice for the 96". From that day, I felt compelled to learn as much as I could about Hillsborough, not so much as finding out what happened, but why it was still a contentious issue, and why the attendees were so vocal that day. What I learned was horrifying. Nobody should ever go to a football match and not come home. Nobody should ever have to endure what people at Hillsborough did, and the way the elite police and the government covered it up and allowed the smearing of Liverpool and football fans to occur is truly appalling, unforgivable and almost beyond belief. I try to do what I can to help the campaign process, though my efforts may seem very little in the grand scheme of things, but by knowing and by remembering, I feel that in some way I am not letting the deaths of 96 people being accepted as a result of drunkenness or hooligsnism. I credit every single survivor and campaigner with the events of the last ten years or so, when it has been finally accepted who was really to blame. You are all heroes and admirable figures, and so many of us can learn from your dignity, perseverance, strength and unity.

  • The main contributing factor to this was the perimeter fencing at Hillsborough. If there had been no fencing the people at the front would have had easy access to the pitch. It has always amazed me that it took until 1989 for a tragedy like this to happen. I had been at a few games around this time where this could easily have happened. A truly Terrible day.

    @ZeldaFitz@ZeldaFitz5 жыл бұрын
    • But weren't those fences put in place to prevent overenthusiastic fans from running onto the field during a game, or a ball go flying into the crowd? Not blaming these poor victims at all, but I thought I read that this is the case. I suppose the bigger mistake would be to not have the fences open like a gate onto the field (it would make sense for other emergencies like a fire to have another escape route)

  • I watched the tragedy unfold live on TV from halfway across the world. Yes there was about 10min when nobody understood what was going on. Notts fans, commentators, security and police misunderstood the situation (for about 2 min) Once they knew something was wrong, everyone there that day acted well. The Notts fans were penned up at the other end, but they went silent. Commentators were calling for help, police officers and security were pitching in. And of course the Liverpool fans themselves were performing heroic acts. Because I was a world away I never knew the disgusting things said in the media, or was aware that police leaders were initiatiating a cover up and smear. The facts that day were already clear to me and everyone. That The Sun still exists is an everlasting shame on Britain. That police leaders had the power to dictate an altered reality for so long is a lesson that must never be repeated. It looked to us like any other match, transmission continued and I watched shocked till only one or two people were left in the ground hours later only aware because the ambulances and stretchers were so numerous, and the shocked commentators. We didn't know till next day that we were watching 96 people die live in front of us. What a terrible tragedy.

The key is strict policy on tickets and seats, good guarding & penalties for those who dont follow rules, get drunk and dont care about football but like to cause brawls and safety built stadiums. On club match days the entrance to the tunnel was manned by stewards & police, when they decided it was full nobody else was allowed down & fans directed to the side pens that were empty on 15 April. The crowd outside was building up from 1 30 onwards, several of the turnstiles had problems & were unavailable for some of the time while the crush was building up, with all the turnstiles open there needed to be at least 12 fans a minute going through to keep up with the 750 per hour needed to get all the fans who had bought tickets in the ground on time. A lot of the fans had never been to Hillsborough before & only saw the sign for standing above the tunnel entrance, the side pens didn't have the correct size signage that should have been visible. A lot of fans who arrived late had been held up on the journey because of roadworks, it wasn't their fault.

The match commander for the police hadn't a clue what he was doing, he had never policed a match for over 10 years. Less than 8 hours after the disaster the high ups of the police were at the Niagra Police Club getting there stories straight, they sold the narrative that drunken fans had caused it. The report found the police, Sheffield Council, the engineering firm who had put the fences between the pens & calculated how many fans should be in each pen, Sheffield Wednesday & the ambulance service were at fault. Why did Siuth Yorkshire Police pay out over £12 million in damages if they weren't at fault? They sold the story of drunken fans to the FA, Margaret Thatcher, the Coroner, tipped off the papers, all to save their own skin. Duckenfield should have got life for what he did. Orgreave, Hillsborough, the Rotherham sex abuse cases, all covered up by South Yorkshire Police. They should have been disbanded, they were rotten from the top downwards, Duckenfield got to retire on a big fat pension, got off scot free.

    • @@jmc7636 It depends on who the person was to you, and how you mourn them. For example, someone I know of personally - a 64-year-old lady, lost her husband 34 years ago in 1987. They'd been married for just over 7 years when he died. She's moved house 3 times since he died (because of her work/career). But each time she's moved house, she takes all her deceased husbands clothes, specialist tools he had, and which she has no need for, his shoes, sports bags, electric shaver, watches, old check stubs, train tickets, literally everything he owned in 1987, and puts it all in the drawers, cupboards and on hangers in a spare bedroom. Much of which most people would consider as junk. In addition, she's never re-married, or even dated anyone since he died in 1987. Because (and I quote), _"Tony would be furious, and I'd feel disloyal, like I was cheating on him."_ That may (or may not?) sound like an extreme example, but it's not at all uncommon. Particularly with widows more that widowers, and especially if their loved one died unexpectedly. Though that's by no means always the case. I hope that explains what I meant by my original comment? Take care JMC and stay healthy.

    • @@DrAnne-mc8er thanks for taking the time to respond, however you did not answer the question I asked at all. If your answer is an example of what is unhealthy then so be it but it still does not answer what I asked. Essentially I wanted you to justify why you think it is unhealthy for parents to still be morning their children who went to a sport event to die sudden and horrific deaths? I'm still perplexed by your initial comment. Further, wanting justice for the victims is not dependent on still being in mourning. The reason 30 years after their deaths they are still begging for justice is because not only did they live the horror of losing their loved ones suddenly and tragically, some being survivors of the disaster themselves, but they were also victim blamed based on blatant lies. I find your initial comment quiet hurtful, assuming your qualification is in a medical field what happened to 'first do no harm'.

      @jmc7636@jmc76363 жыл бұрын
    • @@jmc7636 I don't think *anyone* on KZhead has a legal or moral requirement to _"justify"_ their personal opinion JMC. Furthermore, I believe that to be the case regarding *any* subject matter. For whatever reason, you chose to _camouflage_ your anger towards me regarding my initial response, by asking a very generalised, and unassuming question, i.e. _"When is it the 'correct' time to stop mourning someone?"_ In good faith, and with respect, I answered the question you asked *fully,* in the first 14 words of my reply. So for you to say that I did not answer the question you asked _"at all"_ is clearly not true. However, you have now narrowed down your initial and generalised question somewhat, by explaining that you specifically had parents mourning their children in mind. Narrowing the question down even more by referring specifically to the death of children who went to a sports event, who died suddenly and horrifically. What I try to avoid on KZhead JMC, is becoming embroiled in frankly, churlish and irrelevant word games with people, exclusively for their own entertainment. Had you originally asked; _"Do you feel there is a correct or reasonable time period for parents to stop mourning the death of a child at Hillsborough?"_ I would have answered that question instead. To clarify your assumption, yes, I have three Doctorates in the medical field - a PhD in Medicine, a PhD in Psychiatry, and a third PhD in Social Psychology. As for your sarcastically loaded question of; _"...what happened to 'first do no harm'?"_ As far as I'm aware, it's still written in its original Koine Greek form, from around 420BC _("Πρώτα μην βλάψετε"),_ and still resides (allegedly for safe keeping) in the Vatican Library. Finally, and purely for educational purposes, the phrase credited to Hippocrates of _"first, do no harm"_ forms part of his work entitled, _"Of The Epidemics",_ i.e. in Section II of the Second Constitution of that written work, he states; _"The physician must have two special objectives in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm"._ The phrase *is not,* and *never has been* a part of the Hippocratic Oath taken (worldwide) by medical students upon qualifying as doctors. Again, take care JMC and stay healthy.
