Kosar had all the athleticism of a fire hydrant but boy could he sling that ball around!
As a sentient fire hydrant, I endorse this message.
The Era where you could watch a game for 20 minutes and have no idea what the score is.
Yeah. It was called "PAYING ATTENTION".
When being asked "what's the score?" was an actual good question and not "it says it right there" lol
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424stupid, what If you just turned on the tv?
We truly do take it for granted now. Even the first down line.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424what about people who couldn’t sit and watch the game the entire time? Have you ever been walking through an airport for example and just see a game on and only have a few minutes to watch? Think before you post.
Browns with two games so iconic, so devastating, they are simply named after basic football terms. "The Drive" and "The fumble".
Browns
And both against the Broncos
Third time's the charm: the Broncos dropped the Browns -- in the '89 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Don’t forget Red Right 88, where they threw a pick to Oakland on the goal line with 49 seconds in the game
@@julianbell9161 True!!!
I wasn't even a Browns fan but rooting for them that day. It hurt me more watching this today than it did back in 1987.
It was a special time. Old Mile High stadium, that incredible crowd, Elway working his magic. The Superbowls were terrible, but everything else in between were something else.
BROWNS fan. This was an awesome game!!! Was in US Army and stationed in West Germany at the time. Had to stay up late in order to watch this game in 1987. Also remember staying up late for that double overtime win against the JETS and "The Drive" in 1986. Back then games were pre-recorded and sent to Germany for the troops to watch roughly a week later. Only LIVE games were playoffs and Super Bowl. Heartbreaker of a game for sure. UHG!!! Also, do not forget "The Interception" in the early 1980s against the RAIDERS when the BROWNS just needed to kick a field goal to win and advance to the next level, but they went for a touchdown instead and RAIDERS intercept and win the game. RAIDERS go on to win the Super Bowl against the EAGLES that year. Cleveland "destiny" I suppose. Elway was a BEAST in both these games against Cleveland.
The first AFC Championship game I ever watched. I became a Broncos fan in the fall of 1987 after seeing their helmets in a magazine and falling in love with them! been a fan ever since. Those were the days! When Elway hit Nattiel on Denver’s first offensive play of Super Bowl XXII I thought they were going to win it all, little did I know I would suffer for 10 more years as a Broncos fan until they finally won a Super Bowl! 😆
Try being a Browns fan and watching this happen 4 times once against the Raiders Red 88, and Three times against the Broncos (The Drive, The Fumble and 1989-90 season) and then never sniffing a AFC championship game after that with only 3 playoff appearances since and the team being stolen the only other team cursed like us is the Lions
Never has a player been defined negatively by a game he played so spectacularly in. Earnest Byner was the reason the Browns were even IN POSITION to tie this great game. Thank goodness he got that chip in Washington in 1991.
Elway is probably more well known for The Drive, but this is the day he absolutely carried his team to victory. There are at least four plays here that he turned from sure sacks and losses into huge gains or touchdowns.
When I was a kid, I knew the name and number of just about every key player on each team. It's such a kick hearing all these guy's names again. Now I can barely name the key players on my home team. I don't even watch the games anymore, I just catch the highlights on KZhead.
Hearing all the names was cool. I would here the last names and knew their first names. My Dad HATED Elway. 😂
Same
That's why the NBA is far better at marketing it's players than the NFL is...
I have to watch the AFC championship games with Elway in the 80s bro remember how good they were because as soon as they got to the Superbowl I forgot.
If I want old school football, this is the go to channel
Charles Connor: Agreed!! 👍.
👍👍👍💯💯
You’re right about that!!!
Dick Enberg such a great play by play man 😀🏈RIP Enberg
You’re right about that!!!!!
I remember this game. I was about 9-10 years old then. I never realized how horrible the Browns defense played. Without Earnest Byner, it would've been a blowout!!
Classic and glad Bynar got a ring with washington in 91
Especially the lack of tackling on the final DEN TD, utter crap D from the Browns.
@@Torgo1969 gl ad somebody saw that I've heard the Altitude lack of conditioning was the culprit
True!!
Last time I was here this early this channel was called nfl vault
Can't believe I miss NFL so much I watch this many throwbacks
Red Right 88, The Drive, and The Fumble. The 1980s was a rough time to be a Browns fan. They were actually really good, and had crazy devastating plays happen
The 80s looked REALLY good compared to what their fans have dealt with since 99!
Marty was cursed. He built very good teams, but could never get to “the Big One”
@@TheWundaman71 Same thing happened to him in Kansas City. From 1990 to 1995 he had some great teams with the likes of Neil Smith, Derrick Thomas, Christian Okoye, old but effective future Hall of Famers in Joe Montana and Marcus Allen, and others but no ring, not even an AFC Championship appearance. To this day I feel bad for him after getting no SB rings in Cleveland, Kansas City, and San Diego.
At least Cleveland was dominate in the 1940s-1950s and have 5 Championship titles (pre-Super Bowel era).
literally no one said anything or even tapped Byner on the helmet. I've never seen that in modern football ; Amazing.
Yes, now that you mentioned it!!!!!
I know we remember this game primarily for Byner's fumble(thus the name), but hot damn, Elway at 5:13 be looking like a real GOAT.
This was the best announcing duo in football history! Every time I hear them I am back in my teenage years!
Bernie Kosar eventually got a ring with Dallas. He even played in the ‘93 NFC championship game if I recall correctly.
plutoniumrocket Yes, now that you mentioned it!!!
And Byner got his in '92 ('91 season)
@@BleedBNGYes, now that you mentioned it!!
Yep - Kosar was allowed to play the last few moments of that Super Bowl as well with Dallas. Think he more or less threw the ball once or twice and knelt down for the win against Buffalo.
Webster Slaughter is to blame for the fumble. His job was to wither block or run and take the defender with him. He ran a few yards and stopped and the man covering him was let free to punch the ball out of Byner. Had Webster done his job, Byner had an easy touchdown.
True!!!
Absolutely. He watched the play and didn’t block his man.
nailed it. If Slaughter ran his route to the corner of the end zone, Ernie would have walked in for the score.
Enberg and Olsen hall of fame announcers.
Poor Cleveland. Three iconic bad moments with nicknames. The Drive, The Fumble, and The Shot.
What a cannon Elway had! Nattiel made a helluva catch on that 1st TD with that ball coming so fast
I grew up watching Elway and the Broncos. The guy was a monster.
8:43 is a remarkable play, and a massive one in this game that sort of gets forgotten. What a play by Elway, Jackson, and Sewell who held his block just long enough.
This is when I fell n love with the Broncos? I discovered them & football as a whole n '86. But finally got totally involved n the sport n '87? I was a young baseball fan until this point!!!
God I miss that great stadium!! That place was magic! I sometimes forget how good Elway was and that arm was ridiculous!!
This game still hurts my soul. I was 10 when this game was played. That was a good damn game. Those turnovers killed my Browns
What a ending.
You’re right about that!!!!
Just a year earlier Elway made the legendary “drive” against the same Browns team
Thanks captain obvious
As an Oilers fan this really gutted me for Cleveland, eventhough we were AFC Central rivals, I liked the Browns. And the Broncos went on to get trounced yet again the SB.
Old mile high I was there what a game.
The old mile high was the loudest outdoor stadium it seemed back then
The Drive. The Fumble. Words on Marty’s tombstone.
Karl Johansson Marlon McCree’s fumble on an interception against the Patriots in 2006.
@@ericradford2142. Paul The Person i hope a year later you got over it
Can you do the dolphins vs vikings super bowl VIII. I know the vikings got beat down, but honestly those dolphins back then in the early 70's were fun to watch, one among the greatest teams in NFL history.
Same!!
Webster Slaughter didn't block his man on the fumble
I love this era . My team kicked their ass as underdawgs in the Super Bowl!
Watched this 35 years ago in Denver.
Great game between 2 evenly matched teams. Pity same couldn't be said of the super bowl that season.
My dad was at this game he used to be a die hard browns fan
Levi Browns have a great following were there a lot of Browns backers there
That's rough for Byner. He balled that game. Can't balame him for the L. That was a helluva strip too. Good D
Never seen an NFL game in Denver (I have been to Coors Field) but Mile High Stadium looks like it was a great place to watch a game. I cant understand why they needed a new one.
$$$$
@@storm7617 naw my friend, mile high was falling apart. It was time for a new stadium. I'm lucky enough to have seen 3 games at old mile high though
That was just a great game to watch with no allegiance to either team
Great Video! But we need a throwback video of “The Drive” 🙏
This is great, thanks for posting!!!!
It was quite a game. I slept on a sidewalk, in a mummy bag, in freezing temps to get tickets to that game. It was worth the effort. We were all quite nervous on that drive.
This was an excellent Highlight - not too long but more importantly not too short - often they are way too short (especially Tennis recaps) so you have no suspense or meaning
Seahawks: Turning the ball over right on the goal line really sucks, man. Browns: Tell me about it.
At least that fumble wasn't the result of the stupidest play call of all time!
@@barbaradarnell7376 You’re right about that!!!!
Not a Browns fan, but felt bad for Byner at the end of this game. A true classic from the late 80's. I knew what was coming but had to watch it to the bitter end. Y'all need to make a video of all-time conference championship games rivalries for each conference. This and "The Drive" would be on there for the AFC for sure.
RIP Dick Enberg.
He was a great Announcer!!!!
Earnest Byner in the 4th Qry before the "Fumble" 13 Rush/57 Yrds & 7 Rec /119 Yrds 2 TD's He would have been the MVP and Franchise GOAT had they Won this Game.
Never witnessed this. But now I did
I’ve heard of a snow game, but never a confetti game.
Byner had a monster game with 2 TDs.
great channel
Great game
What a slugfest that was. I watched it the day it was played. As a Broncos fan I feel that my sports fan life has been phenomenal because of the astonishing ability of John Elway and Peyton Manning. Both men exceptional because of their determination to win. But throughout my years of watching their games against the Browns and then later the Chiefs and the Chargers, I always held the thought that Marty Schottenheimer would have won more Superbowls than any coach if it had not been for the fact that John Elway was on the other team. What a coach!
QANOMMON SENSE Marty’s teams that lost to Elway and Denver in the postseason were very, very, very unlikely to have won those Super Bowls. Look who they would have played against. Maybe they could have pulled it off and won 1 against Washington, but they sure as hell aren’t beating the 1989 49ers or 1986 Giants. The NFC was dominant during this period and always winning the Super Bowl, it was a surprise that Denver played as well as they did for one half against the Giants.
Maniac Masturbator They would have lost to the Redskins, but it would not have been the game-changing moment it became, since the Browns’ running game would’ve eaten enough clock to prevent a 35-point quarter.
The fact the Browns were even in the game after how terrible they started was amazing in itself!
Another time when Marty's players let him down smh
True!!!!
Bernie Kosar & Earnest Byner still got the last laugh because they still got rings years before John Elway did.
strangewayshere Wouldn’t that be the first laugh?
That's true, you're right about that!!!
I'm sure that's how they had to look at it to keep their sanity before Super Bowl 32 and 33 and 1 as a GM
Only difference is John Elway actually earned his and didn't have to go to another team as a back up to get it.
With the Cowboys and Redskins, respectively.
As a bronco fan you could see the vulnerability of the defense.Cleveland shouldve never gotten back in that game. Those bronco receivers played their hearts out every game.
@8:36….Cleveland DE # 78 Carl Hairston, who is sunk at the LDT position, runs a stunt to the outside shoulder of the RDE and the Broncos’ LT Dave Studdard, without missing a beat, shifts from the defensive lineman he was engaged with and picks Hairston up in a nearly seamless segue. Excellent blocking by Denver.
I was at the game. Forth row, 45 yard line. Coutusty of my parents and Uncle Ronnie. AKA RB to the Bronco players.
Byner played a hell of a game and honestly that fumble was jya great defensive play. He straight robbed him of the ball.
Byner , He was having a monster game.
I REMEMBER THAT FUMBLE LIKE YESTERDAY.....OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God I miss this type of football. Paper all over the field, hard nose hitting without penalties Dick Enberg in the booth, it doesn't get better
What a great play call at 2:18!
Helluva game!!
god damn it this hurts as a lifelong browns fan that didn’t even witness it
John Elway was a once in a lifetime talent
@5:47…….fantastic run by Kevin Mack.
I watched this game and cryed
15:41, The call by the GREATEST of all time Dick Enberg, OH MY!!!
Good game
As a Redskin fan, " The fumble",was a windfall for the Redskins.
As a Browns fan, I’ve always contended that they woulda played the Redskins way, way tougher than the Broncos did in the SB. Would the Browns have won? I didn’t care and still don’t. I just know they wouldn’t have laid an egg in the SB like the Broncos. Oh well. 35 years later and I’m still hurt over this damn game.
This is one of my first football memories as a kid - the very first being Pats/Phins AFC championship the year prior. Elway’s scrambling ability always frustrated me as a Pats fan. Elway/Broncos didn’t win this game as much as Browns lost it. Poor tackling in the secondary cost the Browns. Either way…a great game. I miss this era of football. They just played the game! No politics or message agendas.
1987 AFC NFC Championship games NFC Championship game: Washington Redskins 17 Minnesota Vikings 10 AFC Championship game: Denver Broncos 38 Cleveland Browns 33
First there was “the drive” and the next year there was “the fumble”. Broncos were the browns daddy back then
Cleveland's fan base has paid their dues and then some over the years. The Cardiac Kids era, "The Drive", "The Fumble," always ending up a day late and a dollar short. Then Modell rips the heart out of the fan base by moving the team to Baltimore and just TWO YEARS LATER they win the Super Bowl. I'm not a part of their beleaguered fan base but for a long time I was thinking if/when they ever have a shot, I'm jumping aboard the train. Well, this year they've got a shot and I'm all in. Go Browns!!!
15:50 YES BROWNS! 15:51 WHY BROWNS?
This was a great 😌 game
I was and still am a Broncos fan, but wished that the Browns had taken one of those trips to the Super Bowl. They deserved a shot at the big one.
That was a whole sad collection of Browns fumbles. :-(
This was the Golden Age of the NFL. Aside, I hated that NBC would hide the scoreboard, until after the commercial break, flash it, then hide it.
BLOWIN' AWAY ELWAY!
Ouch that fumble hurt
77, 49, 73, 34 should be in hall of fame
Earnest Byner is known for this play but in all honesty it's a mockery he's not in the hall of fame
He did get a Super Bowl ring with a TD later on with the Skins. By his own admittance this destroyed his creativity as a player. He was never the same, yet still had a good career.
Could you post the lions and packers 1993 nfc wild card game? Favre to sharpe.
Earnest Byner gets a lot of shit for this but Webster Slaughter deserves some finger pointing also for the missed block on the play.
It's got to be rough to be a Browns fan. Just the fact that for nearly the last twenty years the Browns have been, at best, mediocre or one of the worst teams in professional sports. The AFC Championship losses hurt, but the Browns would've got crushed by the Giants, Washington, and the Niners, anyway, the same way almost every AFC team got smashed in the Super Bowl for 13 years.
Melvin Shine That’s true, you’re right about that!!!
The INTs in the beginning were crucial
Really out of any game you choose this game oh god
Did that rip open a scar?
no but for others it might
Man, Byner did a great job of keeping them in the game...and a better job of taking them out of the game.
Byner was so great in this game.
I felt so bad for Shottenheimer . Kept losing big games to Elway
Biggest choke next to Seahawks not running the ball
28 - 3
Sodaboy1996 it doesn’t rank up there among the big chokes. All it really would have done was tie the game and likely force OT, on the road, in a game in which they looked done when they were down 18 at the half. Cleveland’s losses to Oakland in 1980 and Denver the year before were more winnable games that they had in their hands. The biggest chokes would be Atlanta giving up a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl, or the Oilers blowing a 35-3 lead in the 1992 AFC Wild Card.
Maniac Masturbator Given that a TD gives Elway the ball with a minute and timeouts, I wouldn’t even say “likely force OT”.
Choked in a fumble, entire circus you are.
Denver was so outplayed that game. I was there in a suite next to Modell it was great to witness.
Dear. NFL Throwback Can You Post Super Bowl XXX between The Cowboys and Steelers Larry Brown Game?
I was thanking the Man upstairs for that fumble because, without it, my Broncos would have been watching the Browns play Washington in the Super Bowl. Considering the SB XXII outcome, I'm inclined to think the Browns would have fared better.
