  • BROWNS fan. This was an awesome game!!! Was in US Army and stationed in West Germany at the time. Had to stay up late in order to watch this game in 1987. Also remember staying up late for that double overtime win against the JETS and "The Drive" in 1986. Back then games were pre-recorded and sent to Germany for the troops to watch roughly a week later. Only LIVE games were playoffs and Super Bowl. Heartbreaker of a game for sure. UHG!!! Also, do not forget "The Interception" in the early 1980s against the RAIDERS when the BROWNS just needed to kick a field goal to win and advance to the next level, but they went for a touchdown instead and RAIDERS intercept and win the game. RAIDERS go on to win the Super Bowl against the EAGLES that year. Cleveland "destiny" I suppose. Elway was a BEAST in both these games against Cleveland.

  • The first AFC Championship game I ever watched. I became a Broncos fan in the fall of 1987 after seeing their helmets in a magazine and falling in love with them! been a fan ever since. Those were the days! When Elway hit Nattiel on Denver’s first offensive play of Super Bowl XXII I thought they were going to win it all, little did I know I would suffer for 10 more years as a Broncos fan until they finally won a Super Bowl! 😆

As a Broncos fan I feel that my sports fan life has been phenomenal because of the astonishing ability of John Elway and Peyton Manning. Both men exceptional because of their determination to win. But throughout my years of watching their games against the Browns and then later the Chiefs and the Chargers, I always held the thought that Marty Schottenheimer would have won more Superbowls than any coach if it had not been for the fact that John Elway was on the other team. What a coach!

    • QANOMMON SENSE Marty’s teams that lost to Elway and Denver in the postseason were very, very, very unlikely to have won those Super Bowls. Look who they would have played against. Maybe they could have pulled it off and won 1 against Washington, but they sure as hell aren’t beating the 1989 49ers or 1986 Giants. The NFC was dominant during this period and always winning the Super Bowl, it was a surprise that Denver played as well as they did for one half against the Giants.

  • First there was “the drive” and the next year there was “the fumble”. Broncos were the browns daddy back then

  • Cleveland's fan base has paid their dues and then some over the years. The Cardiac Kids era, "The Drive", "The Fumble," always ending up a day late and a dollar short. Then Modell rips the heart out of the fan base by moving the team to Baltimore and just TWO YEARS LATER they win the Super Bowl. I'm not a part of their beleaguered fan base but for a long time I was thinking if/when they ever have a shot, I'm jumping aboard the train. Well, this year they've got a shot and I'm all in. Go Browns!!!

  • I was and still am a Broncos fan, but wished that the Browns had taken one of those trips to the Super Bowl. They deserved a shot at the big one.

  • This was the Golden Age of the NFL. Aside, I hated that NBC would hide the scoreboard, until after the commercial break, flash it, then hide it.

    • He did get a Super Bowl ring with a TD later on with the Skins. By his own admittance this destroyed his creativity as a player. He was never the same, yet still had a good career.

  • Earnest Byner gets a lot of shit for this but Webster Slaughter deserves some finger pointing also for the missed block on the play.

  • It's got to be rough to be a Browns fan. Just the fact that for nearly the last twenty years the Browns have been, at best, mediocre or one of the worst teams in professional sports. The AFC Championship losses hurt, but the Browns would've got crushed by the Giants, Washington, and the Niners, anyway, the same way almost every AFC team got smashed in the Super Bowl for 13 years.

    • Sodaboy1996 it doesn’t rank up there among the big chokes. All it really would have done was tie the game and likely force OT, on the road, in a game in which they looked done when they were down 18 at the half. Cleveland’s losses to Oakland in 1980 and Denver the year before were more winnable games that they had in their hands. The biggest chokes would be Atlanta giving up a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl, or the Oilers blowing a 35-3 lead in the 1992 AFC Wild Card.

    • Maniac Masturbator Given that a TD gives Elway the ball with a minute and timeouts, I wouldn’t even say “likely force OT”.

  • I was thanking the Man upstairs for that fumble because, without it, my Broncos would have been watching the Browns play Washington in the Super Bowl. Considering the SB XXII outcome, I'm inclined to think the Browns would have fared better.
