*As much as I enjoy practicing more primitive methods of fire making, A Bic lighter has always had a place in my kit. I don't use it always, but it is nice to have instant flame when you need it. These are a few tips or simple mods to make your lighter just a bit better and I will demonstrate use of a lighter in a couple of ways. I will also demonstrate how to salvage a soaked lighter very easily. Many people like using the "roll on the pants" method to achieve this but I prefer the shown method as it doesn't expend the mini ferro rod in the lighter that actually makes the sparks. The rolling method works fine in the short term but I always prefer to think in terms of conserving my resources. I also feel that this method is just as fast if not faster for me personally. Thank you for your time and interest!

Black Hat Bushcraft The fastest way to get the lighter to work after it gets wet is to just keep trying to light it. The flint will dry real quick from the friction.
Black Hat Bushcraft thanks bro
When trying to light the wet lighter it really helps if you roll the wheel backwards a few times, it will rough up the flint and give you a bigger spark... try it
I used Bic lighters for years until I discovered Zippo butane inserts. It's like a mini torch, with a directional, hot blue flame. Far superior for getting a fire started. I've submerged these in water for hours, removed them, given them a shake, blown a couple puffs of air in and they light right up. They are also refillable and they don't leak. Wind-resistant. No more burnt fingers trying to get the flame where I want it. Other companies make these inserts as well. Those I've tried all worked the same. I wrap mine with with bright yellow duct tape for visibility and a fire starter source. I still carry a small BIC as backup, but haven't used it since I switched to the inserts.
A #11 o-ring from Lowe’s works well in place of the Canadian Jam Knot. I put it on my lighters. Just slide it down out of the way to light and I don’t run the risk of losing it when using my lighter. I imagine you could probably burn the o-ring also if needed.
Very helpful! My guess is to wrap the lighter up in cellophane plastic or a sturdy plastic bag to minimize the chance of it getting damp. Also look around for a very small plastic container that will fit at least one lighter air tight. If the lighter stops producing a flame, but continues to produce a spark, then try alcohol. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol should ignite with a spark. Try carrying extra lighters. Thank you for sharing helpful videos!
Thanks for the good video. I personally have always used a small pair of needle nose pliers to take out the child-proof mechanism. So much easier to light.
That Bank-line loop was a lot more convenient than using a zip-tie IMO. The loop is easily attached and removed. Thank you, sir.
Great ideas and suggestions! I thought of yet another way to dry out the lighter would be to tie a length of chord to the loop on the lighter and whirl it about. A 4-foot length whirling at two revolutions per second would give a wind velocity of about 35 miles per hour, in addition, the centrifugal force would tend to throw the water droplets away from the lighter. Cool ideas!
Except if it slips out of your hand... or the knot comes undone... or the cord breaks somehow... and goes sailing through the air never to seen again lol...
That's why you get orange colour remember ? And always use Jedi mind control..." the knot will not come undone, I will not lose my grip " 🤣🤣🤣
Another excellent video full of great advice. Thumbs up.
Thank you so much Lonnie! I truly appreciate that my friend! God bless you and Connie!
You go Master Mercer! You’re both an amazing trainer and an amazing camper. ✊
I truly appreciate your support and kind words!!
Great shout about the tape being used to get a fire going in an emergency, great video on the bic lighter. Thanks.
I find these vids very informative. I am 67 and haven't been camping since the early 2000s and have no desire to, but lots of your info can be used in everybody's daily lives.
The main reason I liked your video was do to the direct teachings, short examples of situations and quick examples of uses. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind words David! I really appreciate you taking the time to tune in and comment sir. Take care!
You are a brilliant woodsman. I, just by chance, never stray too from from a Hilton.
Good tip and I like the lanyard idea on both ends
I picked out something that was bright and caught my eye. We married 5 years ago😀
Damn your lighter lasts that long?
She’s talking about her dildo
😂😂
Wait 40+ years. You might change your mind!
In fishing, we call that the Arbor Knot. Use to tye the fishing line or fly line backing to the arbor of the fishing reel.
After watching this video I added the gorilla tape, bank line loop and extended the bank line long enough to make the Canadian jam knot also (all one peace of line). Now it is impossible to lose the jam knot. If you attach the wet Bic lighter to a 2 foot or so piece of bank line and spin it really fast, it dries out very quickly.
The bank line to stop discharge is a great idea and glad you gave David credit. I have seen the zip tie but this makes more sense and reusable. I like your videos keep them coming.
If you use the correct width zip tie you can slide it off and on the lighter as needed. Ive been rocking that system for the last couple years with great success.
Push down the red button very briefly before spinning the flint wheel to make it light up even better. Learned a few things in your videos, thank you!
Another couple tips is. 1: when your lighter runs out of fuel keep it. I believe certain fire tender (like char cloth and petroleum jelly cotton balls for example) can still be lit by the spark from a empty lighter. 2: if you're careful you remove the flint from your empty bic for a Zippo lighter.
Yayyyyy... I took that safety lock off both my lighters (which I was getting ready to chuck across the room) and now my comprised 62 year old fingers can “light up” easily. Thank you thank you thank you 👏🏼
Thanks I’m just in the process of repacking my buyout bag and will be adding take to all my lighters. 😎👍
Wet lighter? Shake it and blow on it. Only a couple times. Run the striker wheel off the lighter lengthwise against your pantleg till it sparks. It's very quick and less stressing. An old rainy day ginseng hunting trick I learned 30 years ago.
love your down to earth presentation. Great tips. Will definitely add this to my kit and my family's kit!
Thanks for taking your time to show us this
the fact that you ended your video with God Bless made me subscribe. God bless you too.

Thank you so much my friend. I very much appreciate you tuning in and for your kind words. I don't always use my lighter but I would rather have it if I need it than to be without. Take care.
I appreciate that you attribute these methods. I turned on alerts as a result. Good luck with your channel.
What great tips!! Just found your awesome channel and subbed! Absolutely brilliant. Looking forward to watching more. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Steve. 👍👍
Love the Jam knot instruction thank you!
You have a great way of explaining things, I came here for the lighter tips but ended up learning a new knot. And my major weakness is trying knots I suck at it lol. Great video!
Another epic video with practical wisdom. Big ups! 👍🏼

Great tips! especially how to dry out a lighter. Never knew there was a way to get it dried so quick!
Thank you for tuning in! I am glad this information was helpful. It really ins't too difficult to get them dried out usually if you can get out of the weather to do it. Thanks for your kind words. Take care.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, you have a very comforting smoothing voice and make things very clear and understandable. Mary Christmas
Great tips... gracias
Great tip, Real demostration
Good tip about burning the tape. I had never thought of that. I tend to go into the woods lighter heavy. A mini bic in my cook kit and first aid kit, and a regular sized one with my safety supplies.
Thank you for sharing this it's good advice, and clearly works well.
Rock on!! I love these mods. Saved me a cold night a couple of times in the desert.
Why u lie :D

AWESOME ! THANKS :-) Love the tape for tinder !
Really good information.
Good lanyard innovation with the tape!!!
thank you
Sound advice. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
A wet bic.....roll it down your leg until you get sparks...10-15 seconds, turn it upside down and use the flame to dry it thoroughly
That method definitely works. I have experimented with different ways and had good results with each. some people make it out to be difficult but it really isn't too difficult to get a wet lighter back to operation with a little practice. Thank you for watching and commenting!
GatitosWorld wrong wrong wrong. That will wear out your flint very rapidly.
@@Sackmatters it will if you roll it the wrong way. Roll it in the same direction in which you normally do to light it and it won't mess it up as bad.
@@Sackmatters the "flint" in a box lighter is enormous, it will far outlast the fuel in the lighter. Rolling it on your pants to dry it out will not use up the "flint" before the gas outlives it. Besides, we are talking about getting fire now, we may be cold and wet, life is on the line, do we care if we take a little life of the "flint". Not to mention these types of lighter are cheap. Abuse it once, if after that you are not comfortable carrying it, just take a new one next time.
Great video and great tips. That's a very cool hat man!
Other tricks - take a small screwdriver and pry up the "childproof" strip, and use a pair of needlenose pliers to pull it off. Now, your lighter will be much more user friendly to cold fingers. Also, in between the tape strip at the bottom for the "hanger" and the shroud at the top on my other comment, wrap the mid-body with waxed jute or bank line, for more tinder. Also, to dry it off, wipe it off, then blow into the hole, wipe, blow, and that should do it . . . unless the last person to blow in it has ebola, you should be fine.
Good job Matt.
Thank you my friend!
Good stuff brother! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in and comment!
Great Tips...
Great info sir thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment my friend!
Awesome tip!
Thanks
Great video. I got my lighter out and wrapped it after this video.
Thank you Carter! I appreciate you watching buddy! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Liked and subscribed.
Great informative video. I also carry Bic lighters in my kit for the same reason. They are my first go to. I find them to be very reliable, and as you demonstrated here can quickly be dried if they get wet. You can also roll the flint wheel on your pants causing the flint to generate heat. This can accelerate the drying process even more. One thing I do is store my Bic lighters in a prescription drug container. I find that I can get 3 Bic lighters to fit in one of these, and the fuel cannot run out as there is no way the valve button can be depressed. You can wrap duct tape around the container and accomplish the same thing with bank line to create a loop for hanging it, and yes it also floats. I've found that I can easily slide one of these containers into my pocket, and have as many as 3 Bic lighters plus a few other items such as safety pins, or waterproof matches stored inside. Just my two cents.
Great video.
I really like your tips. But I also like your presentation skills. I learn from both
Thank you so much Stephen! I really appreciate your interest and kind words my friend!
Matt as usual one real find video!! I just happen to run across that one about the Bic lighter. Those are good ideas especially typing the little cord on it, and I've been using it. gave me out of your putting to keep it from bleeding out. Keep the videos coming and I will keep watching and tell other about them. Gingdah 🚶💀
Subscribed, great content!
Very useful and Important info here that was presented in an excellent Demo. Checked and found my Notifications were not on for your Ch. what the heck? Anyway, that has been corrected now! Blessings from Oregon Pal and Thank You! ... Your a very good Host and I sure appreciate the excellent demeanor. I'll be catching up with past Vids for sure. ... Mike.
Good hacks for the lighter. Take care.
Thx for the great tips...I enjoyed learning about them. Another idea I've heard is to get the white lighters - because you can easily see the amount of fuel remaining.
This is a good video. Bics are awesome
Nice tips mate. G'day from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you so much! Blessings to you in Australia!
Really good information
Thank you so much for tuning in!
Just came from Corporal Corners. Great info. Keep up the good work.
Great channel!
Awesome video
Thank you so much James!
Great vid thanks for sharing. I thought I'd buy an exotac firesleeve - until i saw how expensive they are! I didn't know about using gorilla tape as tinder, and using cord with a slip knot to lock the butane release are excellent ideas. I just subscribed!
I've been using the exotacs for a few years now... when you're feeling rich, buy yourself one... you won't regret it.
Great tips Matt. Funny enough I've never heard of those tips before. I also like to take off the child's safety features on the lighter to make it easier to ignite. Thanks for the video. - Josh
Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in Josh. Disposing of the child safety lock is always the first mod on my lighters as well. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
