Dark Souls 2 - Emotional Damage Run

Last year I attempted to beat Dark Souls 2 without taking a single point of damage and failed miserably. It was about time I tried again. This video is a compilation of my new efforts to succeed in this challenge.
The rules for the run are very simple: you must beat the game (any%) without being hit or without damage from any source at all. The main strategy of the game was to take many risks early to secure catalysts and spells that'd make the later parts of the run easier. Instead of defeating the four Great Ones, Freja was beaten four times to obtain the 1 million souls necessary to open the Shrine of Winter and skip many other bosses. Summons and savequitting to avoid NPCs was allowed. Fall damage was avoided by constantly wearing the cat ring.
Not Hit Runs have been achieved by multiple players already on all the Souls games, but after some research I believe this is the world's first ever no damage run on Dark Souls 2 and perhaps the third one overall, with Squilla holding the DS3 and a japanese player named Otsunari having done DS1. As for no damage as well as no hit, as far as I know this run should be the second after Squilla's.

  • The absolute madman... But the madman had common fruit on his side. You could never compete with a power such as that. The staff he wielded had failed him before, his rapier too. But never his common fruit. Always one on his belt, to free himself from the memories and struggles this hell had provided him with. Otz had fallen many times before, too many even to count, yet he still managed to climb to the top in the end. You thought he would lose everything. That he couldn't make it. But he didn't make it alone. His followers, acolytes, supporters and friends, always at his side to mourn with him when the Mirror Knight's or Throne Defender's blade had pierced his flesh, forcing him back to the beginning as a new man, a new warrior; a new chance. Each failure had made him stronger, into a greater man, each great soul had fallen after countless tries; some even fell to him on his first. Upon reaching the queen of Drangleic, Nashandra, he had successfully passed all trials before him. She was the only enemy remaining. Her scythe gleamed black, practically unseen by Otz before this moment. An easy fight was all that remained. His great advantage at range had kept him alive. On her deathbed, where only one blow had to be dealt, Otz looked to his belt to see a single common fruit. In triumph, fully boasting his victory through this act, he consumed it. It's power, unnecessary for what had to be done. He let his last spell fly, killing Nashandra and ending his suffering. His torture was over. His followers had cheered him on from the beginning, from his first attempts, and now they bellowed louder than ever. They praised him and the fruit that was his idol, his source of power. They showered him in appreciation and the fruit he and his most faithful loved.

  • From a time when Dark Souls 2 was still Otz’s favorite game. Then he attempted a all bosses/no hit run (+DLC). Concluding the commentary over the run he ended with, the question of what tips he had came up. Answer: “be a streamer with enough viewers so you can take off a couple of months to take it on, and still be able to afford to live”. Unspoken was “be willing to go dead inside “. Two R2’s from winning, Dark Souls 2 didn’t just beat Otz, but broke him. It is an epic story, and he has my respect for an incredible accomplishment to make it 99.999% of the way. And my condolences for having it fall just short of his grasp.

    • The worst p as rt about the hit detection is the mechanic that if you dont have enough of a certain stat (agility if i remember correctly) you will "dodge" the attack and not be stunned but still take partial damage, which pisses me off so damn much.

As i'm finishing my old first DS1 run after years of not touching the game and just beat Kalameet and have only Nito, 4 Kings, Manus, and Gwynn to slay (and about to upgrade from BKGS to Demon Greataxe +15 and face smash them all while rockin' rockChad Havel gear) - I salute you.   • I know theres some runners out there at this point that can do this much more calmly and optimally, but I always come back to this run. Otz's ups and downs make you really want to root for him, and when he finally gets the win you feel not only impressed but happy for Otz.

  • with the level of anxiety I suffer on a normal basis, I would have had to take breaks to throw up the further I got doing something like this. I don't think I'd have been able to attempt it more than a few times, let alone finish. I never saw the stream, never saw prior attempts, and I skipped through most of this video to get to the end. The end still brought tears to my eyes. I hope you're proud of yourself, this was a hell of an accomplishment and no one can take that away from you.
