- his friend left him for dead on the battle field then told the father's wife he'd died in battle. So she thought he was dead and at the kids age he wouldn't have remembered his dad so obviously they ended up dating and acting like the field was the kids dad and told him that so when the father came back the mother was in shock he was alive but not sure what to do as the kid grew up thinking the friend was his dad and when he found out it wasn't the fact she cheated (as again she thought the father had died in battle and the friend left him for dead on the battle field so assumed he died) it was the fact she lied to him about his dad and who he was that was the problem as he was too young to remember him sadly. She just took away all memories of the kids dad and replaced him
