I think it's "Once a cucumber has been pickled it can never become a cucumber again," but you make great points. Hobbies cost money and can isolate us: some of that is expected and a bit of isolation can be a good thing to distract us from everyday stresses. But there is a line where it goes from enthusiasm to obsession. That line can be quite feint, to the point where many don't know when they've crossed it. That's true for audio, working out, motorsports, you name it. Glad you are bringing attention to this in our hobby.

Absolutely, you're spot on. Anything in excess can become overwhelming-be it work, food, exercise, or even entertainment. As a former jazz musician with two decades of experience, I understand the relentless obsession that comes with creating music. It's a 24/7 commitment, consuming us emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes even physically. Musicians don't have much of an option regarding disconnecting from the work they strive to accomplish. While listeners may enjoy the beauty of our work, they often don't see the intricate complexities and self-imposed burdens behind the scenes. The enjoyment and beauty they benefit from are the results of intense emotional, spiritual, and even physical exertion. Musicians, too, partake in this, but behind the scenes, it's a world full of complexity and many times unnecessary self-inflicted burdens.

@@guscaldas3 Great reply. Yes, there are definitely professions that basically require a level of obsession: musicians, scientists, athletes, surgeons... I'm not sure there is a way to mitigate it as society is either better for having or simply requires these people. With jazz it's tough because, as you know all too well, there is a constant comparison to those super elite musicians who came before them. How many people can play and create music like Joe Pass or Dizzy Gillespie? But that is the standard and what the musician and the audience expect. It's an almost impossible task and definitely takes its toll.

The cell phone just f*cked it up. The best times was when friends came over and we listened to music or watched a soccer/hockey game together. Nowadays people just sit at home looking at a stupic screen alone. At least where I live.

It's an expensive problem and my wife has no idea how much my system is worth. It's really crazy and to be honest, the sound changes, but I'm not sure it's that much better. I have an addiction to purchasing LP's as well. LP's add up fast.

Good stuff. Let’s be honest: speakers, headphones, DACs, amps, etc, at the end of the day they’re all tools to listen to your music. Sometimes it’s like being obsessed with a fork or a screwdriver. They have their intended purpose, and the purpose of the stereo system is to produce sound waves that get to your ears, preferably as accurately as possible. Or warmer or brighter than neutral depending on your preferences.

Audiophiles are former music lovers who acquired a compulsive disorder. They can't finish a song without adjusting something to get a better sound. They usually don't even finish a song before looking for another song that has the bass, treble, or midrange they want to test. They watch Randy and other KZhead reviewers trying to find the gear that they absolutely must have. You know they're lost when they spend $12,000 on a power cable and swear it was absolutely worth it.

You're spot on about all that. I've realized that anything new I buy won't significantly enhance my system anymore (I'm happy with the sound and thats it). It's just about the thrill of the purchase. Also, Solo jazz and classical piano playing can feel isolating as well, especially after two decades of professional performance. Now, it's a choice between practicing or listening to records. However, to be honest, this hobby of ours might be saving us from spending and wasting time with way more foolish and "earthly" things. This world is getting worse by the hour. Of course we need to relate to the world and others around us but, you know, it can be pretty empty as well. Don't know if you have a good partner but it helps a lot.

The answer is tubes. The world needs more tubes. Once you introduce tubes into your system, you will no longer hear the gear, just glorious room filling music and the itch will slowly start to disappear as you get lost in the music.

usually ine had to spend double if not triple to hear a difference in true musical engagement.Its a feeling thing not a listening.I always tell people to max out there budget rather than repeat the same thing and expect different results.When the innos zen mk3 came jnto the roo. it was a jaw dropping musical engagement I hadnt had in over 20 years of digital it was connected to an Ayre qb-9 dsd dac.Its the streamer exact model or the pulse I recommend to people who want to stop the gerbil wheel from spinning

My original streamer was chromecast audio (approx £60 incl cable), new streamer was Volumio Primo, £679, quite a substantial price difference ! Old cd player was marantz CD 63SE £350 (from 80s or 90s), new one Atoll MD100 £650. In the case of the cd player I know you have to take into account inflation but dacs are supposed to have improved a lot over that many years and at least 1 reviewer and 2 different dealers have suggested the Atoll should sound better in terms of separation of instruments for example ! In the case of the streamers, reviews appear to indicate improved sound quality as you go up in price from the cost of the Chromecast device to the Primo !
