Ed Cherry Band performs "Chant" by Duke Pearson at Zinc Bar for the Guitar Masters Festival in Greenwich Village NYC on Monday April 29, 2024.
Ed Cherry is a legendary jazz guitarist known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie from 1978 to 1992, and for his own recordings and projects as a band leader since that time. He is widely known as for his melodicism, exuding a deep expressiveness on the guitar attributed to great singers such as Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Frank Sinatra.
Tonight Ed featured an first-time All-Star lineup of great swingin' jazz musicians specifically catered for the Guitar Masters Festival - Yotam Silberstein on guitar, Alexander Claffy on upright bass, and Ofri Nehemya on drums.
More amazing, these musicians never played together before they went on stage that night - a testament to their great talent, adaptive skills, and listening abilities.
Ed and Yotam guitars blended beautifully together, and the counterpoint between their playing enhanced the overall experience.
It was a spectacular performance the entire night with fantastic musicianship from all and a great vibe!
This is the 37th installment of my "Great Performances" series, where I upload my own personal LIVE footage from past concerts of great musical artists I've covered either through written articles and/or direct interviews.
The Ed Cherry Band is:
Ed Cherry - Guitar
Yotam Silberstein - Guitar
Alexander Claffy - Upright Bass
Ofri Nehemya- Drums

I’m hearing shades of Eric Gale in there on the outro . Love the music of Eric Gale and have since 1983 ?
love EG me too, kind of (unfortunately) a forgotten name in the jazz world.. also just to point out, I am a huge Eric Gales fan!! 2 Erics, 2 bad asses 🔥

I saw Ed Cherry with Dizzy in 1991
I’m jealous, must’ve been an Amazing show. Wish I was there!
@@radjet I could shake Dizzy's hand, too! His lips control was no longer at its top, but I remember a flabbergasting solo on Birk's Work. WHOA...
I live in Amsterdam, one night Dizzy was there with his band, for some reason they were free and played in this tiny club. The audience was like 20 people, needless to say everybody had a great time. I remember Ed was playing a Super 400.
@@henkvandenhurk1135 I remember Ed was playing a cherry 🙄 semiacoustic in Milan... maybe a 335? 33 ys. later I can't be THAT sure.
killin video single angle, is all you need ,, fantastic,, these cats are bad!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. More EC videos comin'!!
Thanks for uploading! Looking forward to more E.C. videos. One of my favorite guitarists. @@radjet
@@schnirzelzwirn Several more comin'! Please tell your friends and ask them to subscribe (if they like the content)
With dizzy in 1980 jazzaldia festival
Wow!
yeah he played with Diz
Like the telestyle jazzguitars. Did hear Ed Bickert first with Telecaster for jazz. He also get the mellow tone with the right strings and tonepot. Did not hear the so big difference between singelcoil and the humbucker he used the last time. Most in the fingers i thnk.
Love the tone on that Telestyle Jazz guitar Ed is playin'!
@@radjet I think also Ed Cherry like Ed Bickert tone. Bickert improvice both with comping and single lines at the same time. He could use some theme from movies and what he has listen to. And used some wonderful sounding cords..
@@Plekteret04 Ed admitted in interviews he never used to play this way. If you watch old videos of Ed with Dizzy, he used to play many, many more notes. Ed told the interviewer"....I don't play like that anymore". Wise move!
@@radjet excellent commentary how nice.. you must know EC personally
The way Ed Bickert played the Tele and the way Ed C plays it are pretty much night and day aren't they? (It's just the same guitar) Yeah Bickert is bad ass... Ed got some dirt in his sound and some pretty good pick attack... cheers man I like the tele style guitars too my favorite. BUT have you seen Chris Flory playing his American Standard strat (instead of the usual/favorite L-7)? similar concept in a way! cheers all

No doubt. These guys are bad cats!
Pasquale Grasso on drums. Who knew?
Haha!
tracking is fuckt
Hmm the other guy was the only complete solo: a lot of Grant Green licks. I had to scroll a bunch to find out who he is... Questionable editing?
No. This is unedited. Exactly as they played it at Zinc.
