  • Was a mechanic at a Mack Truck dealership and did lots of these. Often times depending on how many leafs were broke you'd cut the U-Bolts, unstack the leafs and replace the individual leafs that were broken. On the whole spring replacement I had an adapter made up that I bolted to a transmission jack, that threaded onto the center bolt, and could wheel the old spring assembly off and the newly assembled spring on. The U-Bolts on these were the largest fastener on a Mack. Worst part was always spinning the cut U-Bolts out, they were often frozen up in the saddles.

  • Worked on many Mack suspensions 44 and 55 heavy dirty work, we had a pit to work in which made things a little easier. One guy would hold bushing box over his head while standing in the pit while the other started the bolts Boy o Boy that was heavy work. We also used a chain fall to pick truck up to remove tires and set it down on wooden blocks.

  • I worked at the Indianapolis Mack dealership for 19 years and did several of these. Including the rubber bushed two piece trunnion saddles. I still have all my fingers and toes. Two of my coworkers unfortunately don't. It's a physically hard, dangerous, dirty and time consuming job. That was in the 80s and 90s I'm paying the price physically for it now. If I remember correctly the U-bolts torque was 1100 to 1200 pounds. Rough way to make a living.

Need to get you one of those big one inch mega torque impact guns to take that stuff off with. Did you replace the bar and do those spring packs come as a unit or do you rebuild them in your shop. Think I would weld an extension on that spanner wrench for more leverage. I like the cart you remove and replace the spring packs with. Is it shop built. Sorry for all the questions but I find your videos informative. They answer a lot of questions and I just like making broken worn out stuff new again. Go buy yourself a beer you have earned it. Saludos.

I try grease them walking beam bushing for 8 months twice a shift trying make them last longer. Nope wasted my time 8 to 10 months at best start replace all bushings again. We even put a set-up of full oil covered 90 weight oil in few to test trucks to try it. Not much improvement for the headache of homemade set-up. I could killed 2 drivers every weekend replacing 4 springs, 2 same trucks. Blame in-laws of owners.
