Ndume is a male gorilla who came to live with Koko when he was 10 years old, in 1991, from the Cincinnati Zoo. Koko selected him via a process similar to "video dating" and when they first met, it didn't take long at all before they became comfortable with each other. This video shows their first meeting, and how Ndume has developed into a large, powerful - yet patient and sweet - silverback gorilla.

You know what the biggest thing they did that contributed to/was the cause of her not ever becoming pregnant? lol..the fact that other than that initial meeting with the male in this video they were never ever again allowed to be in the same enclosure together..ever! Poor Ndume stayed locked up inside a freaking trailer pretty much 24/7 often for weeks at at time. She never wanted Koko to actually become pregnant because she was afraid that if Koko had any relationships with other gorillas it would interfere with the relationship she had with Koko. You can search and out of the hundreds of video clips out there you will never ever find a video that shows them interacting together or in the same enclosure together! 😉🙂

I imagine the reason why Ndume was freaked out by Koko was because of the way she approached him. She approached him with excitement, but more importantly, the way HUMANS approach/greet one another. Gorilla's do things differently... Gorilla's born in the wild when they are attracted to a potential mate, she will be near him but not closer than 20 feet. The female will then wait for the male to approach them. If he does, than they mate. If he acts uninterested, then the female either gives up looks for someone else, OR.... Well! The female gorilla goes and talks to another male or group of males, but the alternate male/males are WEAKER in station! (This is important!😉) She flirts with these males in FRONT of the 1st choice male. This USUALLY ends up working out for the female because the male gorilla NORMALLY becomes jealous (Why she talking to them/him? He ain't even HALF the gorilla I am!!) Male gorilla kicks the other males out, before they can "score", and the female and 1st choice male are happy!😊 They mate and they are then "together." I don't understand why the people taking care of Koko didn't teach her how to "attract" another male gorilla.... I can only guess that we didn't know this info at the time... (I got my info from a pbs documentary specifically on gorilla's interacting in the wild.)

That would never have happened because everybody refused to send their gorilla there to her "establishment" because of the awful conditions. Wonder how she ended up with Michael the first male gorilla? This woman who is supposed to be an advocate for gorillas bought Michael and a young female gorilla from a well known hunter/poacher who went out and killed their families in the wild and stole the 2 and then illegally shipped them to the US where it is a known fact that "Dr. Penny" lied about their ages/the time the arrived. She paid a man to steal them from the wild, knowing that the way that happens is because they kill the family to get the baby. The female she paid for died before reaching her.
That footage of Ndume at the end all alone! So sad 😭 I think the real experiment here is that Koko got so smart, she can't find a mate who can keep her interested 😂

I've always wondered why they never tried artificial insemination with Koko. She wanted to be a mother so so badly, but she just never formed a mating bond with a male. It seems like perhaps they just thought that was too much of an unnatural way for her to become a mother. I don't know enough about gorillas - maybe the lack of a family group would have affected her ability to get through a pregnancy and to raise a baby. Koko was two years older than me. I learned sign language in high school and have kept it up throughout my life. She was simply the most amazing creature. The world mourns her passing.

***** Way too old. The absolute max lifespan that we know of for gorillas is 50. She's going on 44, now. Perhaps it would have been best to have introduced her to a very young orphan since she doesn't do well with other gorilla males. Honestly, she has always gotten on better with people.
