  • I know these interview-type videos get fewer views than the actual performance video, but please do not stop making them: those few of us who watch them greatly appreciate the insight from the musicians.

  • The conclusion at the end of the video- the B Minor Mass represents the "best of J.S. Bach"- is certainly a popular one and if pressed to give a single answer as to Bach's best work I would probably "fall in line" and agree. But if BWV 232 is Bach's best work, it certainly does not TOWER over some other candidates for the same honor, most closely the Matthew Passion, the Motets, the Goldberg Variations or the Well-Tempered Cavalier, the English or French Suites, the solo Cello Suites, some of the early cantatas, and even some of the concertos. That the B Minor Mass- which may very well be the single most excellent musical or even artistic creation ever- does not tower over at least ten or so other works by the SAME composer is proof positive of Bach's jaw-dropping greatness and likely forever distinction as the best composer of all time. The well of J.S. Bach quality is infinitely deep.

  • "Goose bumps" - thus many of the musicians here described their feelings towards various sections in this great Mass by Bach. This is also its impact on my personal feelings as one of the audience. Jos van Veldhoven, the conductor, told us that he felt he should not perform this work as a reconstruction, and right he was in this decision - the wonderful result of this NBS performance speak for itself. His last words in this interview are really important for understanding that this magnificent music-work is the summary of "Bach's whole life, his last will and testament". Thanks for this amazing upload.

  • What this brief insight brings out clearly, notably in the references to the Dutch language, here the fulchrum of the whole enterprise, is how music is a force of reconciliation. At the forefront that of Bach in this monumental format. I normally avoid referring to other performances in what I say about one in particular, but here I think it is constructive. The movement of musical reconciliation after the 2nd World War probably started with the cantata performances in the 1950s and 60s under Fritz Werner. I feel this especially today with performances conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. He brought his forces to London in the noughties to perform the B Minor Mass, featuring 3 lady trumpeters in kimonos. More recently, David Chin has conducted the B Minor Mass with local forces in Malaysia. I'm sure he does not do this to make a lot of money or become famous. Currently, performances of Bach on a par with those in Western Europe are cropping up in Russia, including of the B Minor Mass, and resources have clearly been made available to facilitate this. I suspect this reflects the musical taste of president Putin. Perhaps somebody into musical espionage could confirm or deny this. Where the Neds set the pace is in the constant evidence, not least shown in this video, that they have looked afresh at Bach's scores. That freshness involves everybody and is one of their trump cards.

Cómo quisiera ya estar en el Paraíso cerca de Bach escuchando como le sigue componiendo a Dios música que acá hubiera compuesto si seguía vivo.
