    • I get busted more walking out on afternoon hunts then I ever get busted walking in the mornings. Mornings are the best time to hunt for the property I hunt. I can slip in close to bedding way before the deer start heading back from the ag fields on the neighboring properties. The deer generally start making it to the bedding around 8:30-10:30am

  • Last year I completely changed the way I hunt after my first year on this new land revealed I cannot hunt mornings here, especially in early season. I used to love mornings and they were always my most productive hunts. I wont hunt mornings any longer until Muzzleloader season, and even then I spooked deer early and my number 1 hit lister.. Luckily it was the first time I had spooked him all year and I tagged him about 30 minutes later.

  • Early season bow ( October) in my area most mature bucks are in bed before daylight in the morning. You will see does with fawns and small bucks but doubtful you'll see a big buck. I run trail cameras year around and that's just how it is. Now after Halloween the game changes. If a nice cold front comes in you can catch mature bucks sneaking around before they go to bed. Once the rut is really going I've shot more mature bucks in the late mornings sneaking around between 8 to 12. Late season I see bucks morning and evening because less pressure and better colder weather. But I would say I've shot more mature bucks in late morning than evening hunts. And midday is a great time depending on the weather in pre rut and rut for big mature bucks. But this is just my experience in my area after over 40 years of hunting. I hunt Oklahoma Kansas border with some crop fields and lots of oak ridges, persimmons and creek bottoms.

One suggestion: a decal or small sign to tag food plots and development on property to go will orders from your online store. I made my first order a few days ago for some Cereal Rye to top off some areas to get me to Spring for the beginning of the Ultimate No Till Food Plot for the very first time.

    • If you sleep in, and let's say you walk to your stand at 8:45 am, you will likely disturb animals and lowering the odds of a buck coming in. Not to mention your scent trail would be much fresher than walking in three hours earlier. Basically, the way you are morning hunting is putting deer in front of you in the morning, it's working, don't mess with success.

I really just try to get in early and let things calm down until I start to see movement again around 9 or 10, sometimes even closer to noon. I've only ever shot deer in the afternoon, but then again, I've only ever shot 2 deer. Still very new to the whole thing. • Million Dollar question. Do or should you use a flashlight walking in the morning. I typically try not to as much as possible, but I find that the older my eyes are getting the harder it is to see, especially in the woods and I'v gotten off my access and it was 30 yards before I realized it. I was always that flashlights are a big no no, but then some guys say as long as you point them at the ground they are fine and more beneficial then stumbling over stuff or stepping on large sticks.

    • Definitely not in open country/open ag land. We even ride our Quietkats with zero light. But in the woods I use a low, moonlight setting pointed mostly straight down. About 1 lumens. If really thick tho I use more light. But rest assured without any doubt...lights spook deer!

    • I wait until grey light to walk in. When I was younger I used green or red light to walk in but I was usually walking way back in the dark. Now that I'm older I walk in when you can see, not sunrise but just the grey light that you can follow your trail to your stand or blind. I don't spook deer and I see plenty of deer doing it this way. In my area they're usually coming back from crops or acorns so you have time before they start wandering by the area I'm hunting.

  • How does the presence of a large predator affect deer hunting? If wolves or mountain lions were re-introduced to eastern states, where they’re currently not present would habitat management for deer become irrelevant, because those deer are always on the lookout for those predators. Therefore there’s no way to pattern them?

I can't remember if it was you or someone else, but he said that darkness of antlers has nothing to do with aging. He also said he's had several old bucks that horns were white and young bucks with dark horns. I like getting different perspectives. I sure wished I would have watched your videos b4 I built my house in the middle of my hunting area. Like I said b4, my front yard is my evening food plots, and bc I walk down the driveway (plots on both sides) on my way to my morning spot, the deer come out later in field and all I can do is see them on cans at night. I just don't have a solution for this problem.

I will often go in around 3 in the afternoon I don't hunt many mornings until the rut which in my area is about the second week in November but I usually start around the first weekend in November and Hunt rut funnels and travel corridors etc. Late-season I will do a little bit more morning hunting but I have to be very careful my property has a lot of high ridges valleys 300 acres so the topography is very diverse. Last year will hunting on a bench up pretty high got busted by about 160 in buck that was down below me I mainly bow hunt so there wasn't much I could do as he stood there blowing at me from 75 yards away. The bottom on the creek is mainly pasture with strips of timber up high again it's pasture and in the middle it's the sidehill The ridges dropping down to the lower pasture are steep in places, side hills and the ridges have a lot of benches and travel corridors. (Log roads) I've only had this farm 3 years now so I'm still really learning it. Set up several mock scrapes with hanging Vines one gets used a lot everyday. No water holes yet I've got several ponds on the property in a large creek but I do plan on putting a few in here and there.
